    Thad's Hockey Corner

I think everyone on JUB knows what a hockey fan I am. And they might be very tired of it.
So I'm moving to where it belongs...even if it's this dusty, neglected corner.

OK. I've just returned from seeing the Florida Panthers trounce the LA Kings, 6-1. The Panther power play is quite good. And the Kings' defense "stars" made some errors this game.

I do like the Panthers' goal song. It's "Sweetness," by Jimmy Eat World. Here's how they use it:

If I had stayed home I could have seen the Flyers-Penguins Stadium Series game. I am watching on TV and not happy the Penguins lead 3-1. I don't know if I'd really pay a premium price for a distant view of a game in a cold (maybe wet or windy) outdoor venue.

    ^Well!

The Flyers came back to tie, send the game into overtime...and captain Claude Giroux scored a beautiful goal to win it in overtime

    Love it!

I went to Fort Lauderdale Pride today. The Panthers had a booth there! I got a drawstring bag, a pen, a pencil, and schedules.
Now if they could just make the playoffs I could become a fan.

Then I saw the third period of the Minnesota-St. Louis game on TV at the gay sports bar in Wilton Manors. Minnesota won in overtime. Their brand-new acquisition (Donato) scored the winner.

At least you're not a Flyers fan, Thad, lol!. I'm a baseball and basketball fan.. I'll watch football but not really my thing, not a soccer or hockey fan at all but love that more stuff gets brought to the sports forum, and the more the better so hope this gets pretty busy.

Thanks for stopping by! I thought this might just become like my hockey blog but I welcome company/debate/discussion!
I'm safely home. And watching hockey on TV. But it's not the NHL. My cable system lets me watch the Lehigh Valley Phantoms broadcasts. They're the Flyers' farm team in the AHL, and not having a very good season. But tonight they're leading the Utica Comets, 2-1. The Comets are the Vancouver Canucks' farm club.
I've never gone to a Phantoms game; I used to have to work in the Lehigh Valley and I hate it!

Tonight I'm by the TV watching Minnesota at Nashville. Yes, they played Sunday in St. Paul...Nashville won in overtime.

The Predators' arena is loud and a little mean...I was there in December and loved it.

It's 1-0 early in the game. Nashville got a quick goal.

This is why I sometimes hate NBC's hockey coverage.

Pierre McGuire was wasting time talking with someone who races Indy cars.

And, oh...guess which network is broadcasting Indy car races next year?

I don't consider auto racing a sport. I do not care for auto racing.

At least Pierre is now talking with Peter Laviolette, Predators coach. I like Pierre McGuire; he was an NHL coach long ago (in Hartford!) and knows his hockey.

But, oh, no, he's talking to Racer Boy again. I'm putting this on mute. What a waste.

I don't mind Sidney Crosby. He's a great hard-working hockey player and I kinda like his attitude.
But I don't care for the Pittsburgh Penguins or their arena. So last night's broadcast on NBCSN was agony for me.
I DO like Pittsburgh (the city) and the Pirates and their stadium. I'm going there next month. But if the Penguins miss the playoffs I'd like that.

Thanks to my cable provider I could see the Flyers beat Ottawa, then the Sharks beat the Wild.

The Flyers' current heat may be too little too late, but it sure is fun to see.

My next NHL games to attend in person are March 23 and 24 in Raleigh. Minnesota visits Saturday the 23rd and Montreal comes for You Can Play night Sunday the 24th. I love the NHL for endorsing You Can Play and its message of inclusion for LGBT players, officials, and fans.

I do like the Hurricanes. I've seen them twice this season: a loss in New Jersey, a win in Florida.

My cable system is letting me view the Capitals at Lightning game tonight. Yesss!

I like the Lightning. Best record in the league...what's not to love? But I've seen them in person only once this year...in Brooklyn, and the Islanders beat them 5-1.

The Lightning lead 3-2 halfway through tonight's game.

Sure! Mostly NHL, but if you love college hockey, the minors, or even women"s or sled hockey...tell me about it.

I've been to AHL & ECHL games and some ECAC college tournament games, but not this season.

Field hockey I don't know but next year is an Olympic year so I'll watch. But it's not popular in the USA, although my cousin Betsy played in college.

Hello from Pride Night at the Carolina Hurricanes!

It's a beautiful day in Raleigh. High temp in the 70s and plenty of sunshine.

Tonight's opponent is the Montreal Canadiens. There are lots of Montreal fans here. I was told they often come since it's available and affordable. I'm still rooting for the Canes.

Oh, I do like the Lightning. Brayden Point, #21, is my favorite player. He just never stops going for the puck.

But I've seen the Lightning only once this season, at Pride Night at the New York Islanders - and the Islanders won 5-1.

After one period, the Canadiens lead 1-0. It wasn't from lack of effort by the Hurricanes...they outshot Montreal this period, 21-13. That's a lot of shots!

The Hurricanes have embraced this Pride Night with good presentations on the center scoreboard and salutes to local community activists. Several area LGBT groups had tables in the concourse.

I have lots of favorite Hurricanes players. It's tough to choose.

    Canes win!!!!

    Final, in overtime: 2-1. Wow!

The three stars were all from the Hurricanes: Trevor van Riemsdyk (who scored the tying goal), Andrei Svechnikov (who scored the overtime winner), and Curtis McElhinney (goalie). Granted, Carey Price, Montreal's veteran goalie, played well too.

This is probably my last live NHL game of the season. What a way to go out! I'll be by the TV the rest of the way.

The Flyers, my hometown team, will not make this year's Stanley Cup playoffs. They lost to Carolina 5-2 today.

I got a heartbreaking e-mail from the Tampa Bay Lightning offering playoff tickets for sale. Ouch. I'd so love to go. The budget says "hell no."

I get regular e-mail from many teams: Tampa Bay, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Washington, Dallas, Columbus, and my longest-running Chicago. I'm also getting the league's daily news.

Playoffs! So I'll make my predictions. The numbers by the teams are how they performed when I saw them in person this season.

I'll start with the Western Conference.

    Calgary (0-0) vs Colorado (0-0)
How did Calgary get so good? They're playing to their potential, finally. And Johnny Gaudreau has the help he needed. I didn't see the Avs this season, but I'm underwhelmed. Nathan McKinnon is my choice for most overrated player.
    Calgary in 4.

Nashville continued their playoff tradition of bringing in major country music stars to perform the national anthem. I was worried...because for game 1 the guests were Big & Rich! I needn't have worried. They sang an a capella version in harmony that was preferable to the pitchy woman singer at the Islanders game earlier.

Watched the Leafs beat the Bruins Thursday nite with the help of a penalty shot goal that was a beauty. Just finished watching the Caps win game two in OT vs the Hurricanes. Both teams played gritty playoff hockey. Will try to see the Leafs-Bruins game in a little while.

It's playoff hockey. Everything gets magnified.

Who expected Tampa Bay and Winnipeg to be down 0-2 each?

I'm pleased with the Islanders' playoff performance so far and will be watching the noon game from Pittsburgh today.

Well...I was so wrong about the Avalanche. Apparently Nathan McKinnon got to be good when I wasn't looking.

Tonight I'll be by a TV rooting for the "bunch of jerks." They're playing at home in Raleigh. But I know the Capitals will hang tough...and who couldn't love Alex Ovechkin?

And now powerhouse Nashville is out. These playoffs are full of surprises.

Tonight brings two deciding Game 7's. Boston and Toronto are evenly matched. Anything could happen. I don't like San Jose and hope Vegas finds a key to win. The Sharks are beatable...the one time I saw them this season they were shut out.

Tomorrow is Washington and Carolina's final game. We'll see if the "bunch of jerks" can prevail over the current Stanley Cup champions.

This has been one of the most bizarre first rounds in recent memory...

    • Nashville
    • Tampa Bay
    • Calgary
    • Winnipeg
    • Pittsburgh

Washington going to a game 7... this has been so strange. I really hope that the second round is just as entertaining, but at least we'll be looking at a good chance of having a team win the Cup who hasn't won in a while (aside from Washington, although I'd LOVE to see the Caps win again this year).

    Yes...goodbye, top seeds!

Boston knocked off pesky Toronto earlier tonight. And I'm pleased to say Vegas has a 3-0 lead in their game 7. Although that game is turning nasty...and even though I don't like the Sharks I don't like seeing Joe Pavelski getting hurt. Still...

Oh, crap. The Sharks got a 5-minute power play and quickly scored twice. Then tied it. Aaaargh.

Then the Sharks scored a fourth goal. The NBCSN commentators are saying, "I don't think I've seen anything like it. What a turn of events."
I don't like it. But I was impressed.

We're going to overtime. Jonathan Marchessault scored for Vegas with 47 seconds left in regulation.

And the Sharks win. Well, that's playoff hockey.

    Re: Thad's Hockey Corner

And the defending champion Capitals are out! But it took double overtime in game 7 to do it.

So who's left? Time to predict:

Islanders vs. Hurricanes: My favorite matchup and I hope the winner goes on to take it all. The Islanders have been under the radar all season but they're good. It won't be easy. Islanders in 6.

Bruins vs. Blue Jackets: Boston has a better reputation and better regular season record. But Columbus has better goaltending and a chip on their shoulders. And Boston may be tired after their tough series vs. Toronto. Columbus in 6.

Blues vs. Stars: The Stars have better goaltending. But the Blues are coming in strong. Blues in 5.

Sharks vs. Avalanche: Full disclosure. I hate the Sharks. I may regret this because I don't like Colorado's star Nathan McKinnon either. (Didn't see him this season but he didn't impress me when I've seen him in person in past seasons.) I do love Phillip Grubauer, current hot goalie for Colorado. Going on a limb...Colorado in 6.

Watched the Canes beat the Islanders 1-0 in OT, amazing team keeps winning. Didn't stay up to watch the 2 OT victory by Columbus last nite to even their series with Boston. Lots of surprises this year, Cup up for grabs!

I was busy so haven't posted for a week. But, oh, how these playoffs are going! Double overtime in game 7 needed for the Blues to advance! Game 7 tonight for the Avs-Sharks series. (I plan to be at my local gay sports bar with my Avalanche hoodie on. I just don't like the Sharks.)
And the Eastern finals start tomorrow. Who'd have picked Carolina-Boston? I've got my "FOX Sports Carolinas Home of the Hurricanes" poster on my door so it's clear who I'm rooting for.

When I've gone to see NHL playoff games at my favorite gay sports bar this month...my favorite teams lose.
And, although I go to avoid watching alone...since local teams aren't involved, nobody else pays any attention and I might as well be watching alone.

    Re: Thad's Hockey Corner

Blues got jobbed by the refs in OT last nite, by not calling the obvious hand pass leading to the game winning goal. Damn shame when games are decided by bad calls or no calls.

^That will be talked about for years. And despite all the video equipment and replay possibility.

But that Western series is so exciting. Boston didn't give the Canes any chances and that Bruins power play is wicked good now.

(taking the Fox Sports Carolinas Hurricanes poster off my door...)

    Re: Thad's Hockey Corner

Puck luck seemed to be against the Canes with lots of pucks hitting iron vice twine, but the Bruins did play a nice brand of hockey to keep Carolina pretty much at bay in each game. Their Marchand, Bergeron, Pasternak line is pretty tough.
