    Vacation

It has been a LONG year.

I'm more or less under Doctor's Orders (seriously!) to take a vacation. Someplace sunny and warm. And by myself. By the middle of February. Not Vegas, thanks--it is my least favorite city I've been to.

I have NO idea where to go, really. I'd prefer to keep it Domestic (no hassles with customs or anything), and my budget is not huge.

    Any suggestions??

I'd just stay home doing nothing but lying in bed watching tv and pigging out, vacations are a lot of hassle.

Sunny and warm in the U.S.A. by February pretty much restricts you to Florida, Southern California, or Hawaii. I'd take Hawaii.

Well, you're not that far from San Antonio. Although, that may not be enough of a getaway.

I also heard today that tourism is returning to Puerto Rico.

How hard would it be to get to Cuba? Or back?

Part of the issue is to get away from home, leaving The Partner to keep the couch out of the gravity vortex that apparently begins/ends in my living room.

Isn’t there any place you’d like to visit for a few days? Someplace you always wondered about? Palm Springs? Fort Lauderdale? Key West? Lake Tahoe?

    Re: Vacation

I liked St. Petersburg and Tampa when I was there last year. It's not very expensive. St. Pete's beaches are wonderful. If beaches don't matter, there's culture, cuisine, and Cuban heritage in Tampa. And downtown St. Petersburg is enjoying a surprising renaissance. Just a few years ago nobody wanted to go there. It's now lively. The locals are still getting used to that.

I've never been to San Diego, but friends love it.

Palm Springs is another possibility. I liked it when I was there years ago. There's a wide range of accommodations.

    Re: Vacation

I was wondering what the weather was like in Sedona, Arizona in January and February. It would be on the cool side. I visited there ten years ago with friends from Arizona in the fall and we took an off-road jeep tour and I really enjoyed that. It might be too cold in February and they may not have many activities in February. Anyway, it was a thought.

I'm considering the Gulf Coast with a road trip, but not sure. Never been, although I love new things, this might not be the time for it.

Been to PS (not my cup of tea), Key West might be fun but I might run into my brother (really bad idea). Done Ft. La de da; not interested again, and LT is not warm.

Also on the short list is Orlando. I haven't been in about 20 years, and might be fun. Never done it by myself, though.

Someplace beachy would be interesting, but not being much of a beach person, I think I'd go crazy after the first 24 hours.

A place that I'd consider someday is DC; but in January it's not really warm, and it is very expensive for hotels.

    Re: Vacation

There is more to Vegas than The Strip, the FSE or casinos. There is the Valley of Fire, Mt. Charleston, Hoover Dam, Area 51, The Grand Canyon West Rim and South Rim and many other places where you either fly into Vegas and leave or use it as a base of operation.

You shouldn't count out Vegas just because you don't like Vegas. There is a huge difference between "Vegas" (the lights and sites), Las Vegas (the city) and the Las Vegas area.

I'm going to violate my own rule here, and recommend Mexico. I suggested Puerto Rico earlier because it wouldn't be foreign, yet warm, but I'm going to proffer an alternative now.

Go to Oaxaca. You may need to get a guide when there, but it's a distinct region, not that far from Mexico City, and would be an interesting cultural experience. It is garnering more tourist trade, so should have enough English speakers to be cogent. It's close enough to the coast that you could go there too to see the ocean as you like. I had an employee in my areas (you couldn't call him a co-worker, as he spent all his time watching videos on his phone) go there with a girl he was hoping to date. The rented a villa for a week for only a few hundred dollars. Don't know if it was an Airbnb rental, but was similar. It came with a cook and cleaning service.

Just throwing that out there. I didn't like Cancun because it was too touristy, and I definitely hated all-inclusive packaging, but you could do this and have sunny days and an interesting region to learn.

If you like Mexico and not so much beach, Merida in the Yucatan is beautiful. You will eat well there. It's easy to fly to, there are gay-owned accomodations and a variety of hotels and guesthouses.
