    London, UK Insurance Question

I was watching Instagram clips of uk police crashing people that stole mopeds in London. Some of the mopeds were really damaged. Who would pay for that?

The police were the ones that damaged the bike, but they did it to get it back. Who wants a damaged bike though. So would the crook pay for it, the owner, insurance or police.

Do you guys have to have insurance? How do you think this would work.

    Re: London, UK Insurance Question

The stolen moped, if insured, would have been claimed as a stolen property on an insurance claim. The fact that it was later "recovered" in an arrest wouldn't change that. The moped would become the property of the insurance company if like a car theft.

But, you have to ask yourself how many people carry insurance on a moped. The are so inexpensive, they would quickly not be worth the premiums. The deductibles would not make sense for most people to insure for replacement.

They ware just a whole different class of purchase than a car or a motorcycle.

I like those videos though. They sure have a lot of Brits cheering the law's attempt to do something about the rash of moped thefts and muggings.

Let's see what the Brits say on the insurance. Interesting question.

You missed the point of moped thieves. They don't steal mopeds. They steal handbags, wallets and smartphones from their mopeds and then dash away.

The Met (Metropolitan police) has been given permission to crash into mopeds if and only if the drivers refuse to stop AND if they fear the driver could hurt a pedestrian or cyclist.
I assume the ruined moped is considered to be one of the robber's tools and hus confiscated, broken or whole.

Stealing mopeds wouldn't earn you much. All mopeds are registered and need to be insured. You cannot insure a stolen moped. So you cannot really sell a stolen moped for more than a smartphone.

Okay. So they are not stealing the moped itself, but from the moped.

The moped is merely the 'getaway car'.

Sorry, YOU have missed the point.
They DO steal mopeds because they can use them for crime and not be traced

This reminds me of the scene from Ruthless People when Bette Midler cries, "I've been kidnapped by K-MART!"

What a sorry state to fall into when your petty thieves are scooting around on mopeds. Have some pride, FFS. Make Britain great again.
