What do you call your partner?

I have a number of terms that I use with my wife, 'sweet checks' 'baby doll' and so forth. I have had sex with guys as a teen, but no long lasting romance. Do gay guys use 'terms of endearment'? If so, what?

First of all, I never referred to him as my "partner," I used the term boyfriend. Second, no, I always called him by his name, just like he did with me.

feel the same--although in a longer term relationship partner ok---what really bothers me and I don't know why--guess I'm just a non traditional arty type--not wanting to give in to heterosexual jargon--but gay guys who say," my husband" or lesbians who say, "my wife"---bothers the shit out of me.

Maybe it's a generational thing. You're younger, so you may not have had to face the problem of a descriptive term for a long term mate if your peers don't see that as a need. In people of my generation and older, there is an expectation of a term to describe one's mate, and boyfriend or girlfriend carry the connotation of being a temporary dating phase, even a juvenile term.

An interesting perspective. I've encountered only one such instance that annoyed me. I have a friend, and former JUB member, who routinely says "my husband" when he is referring to his husband (they are married.) But, to me, it sounds like some affectation or proclamation as if I were a stranger and he needed to broadcast that he was gay. Since I know him and his husband by name, it seems highly unnatural for him to not simply refer to his husband by name. It also sounds like he's used to keeping the name private, as if he's referring to him generically to keep from giving away his name.

Of course, it's not both, most likely, but either is annoying.

hope you are enjoying Florida---now that you are both together 24-7 guess that can get challenging ---my grandfather was retired 6 months and hung out with my grandmother before he got another job!

The first time he called me dumbass I was so offended, until i learned it is a term of affection. He is from Pittsburgh. So the I started calling him retard and that cured him real quick 😄. Now we are partners.

Re: What do you call your partner?

I've been single for many years, but when I was in relationships I always called them by their names.

To others, I would have referred to them as 'my boyfriend', 'my partner', 'the love of my life', 'my other half', or whatever seemed appropriate.

If I had ever been married I would have used the term 'husband' with pride.

re: FPNY's post above: I love the term 'my sweet baboo'. I refer to my best friend by that term now and again.

I love to say my husband to unsuspecting straights..itís bends their heads a little...if we donít introduce ourselves as a married couple the way straights theyíll never get it.. we were invited to some new neighbors house for happy hour a few weekend ago...all straight. They knew our story and were amazed to learn that we had been together longer than any of them...it helps the unknowing understand...

Partner---if they ask --married. I agree with Harvey Fierstein --marriage is a legal and financial arrangement which can be necessary ---you can love someone and never have to be married.

Nah lol partner sounds cringey, especially when straight people use it. I get the reasons for using it though I'd never use it myself.

It makes it sound like the person is being vague about their "partner" being a man or woman, even if that isn't the intention. A guy who says "husband" is a lot more commanding of respect.

I always assumed that straight guys started using the term partner because "wife" and "girlfriend" are now considered sexist.
