    Has anything much changed?

The Catholic Archdiocese of Boston sex abuse scandal was part of a series of Catholic Church sexual abuse cases in the United States that revealed widespread wrongdoing in the American Roman Catholic Church.

There seems to be a current refocus on it being a global problem, rather than an American problem.

Catholics number some 1.3 million souls on this planet, more than any other sect of Christianity. Their church has been well known to change at a glacial speed.

I'm not Catholic, so I can't say how much has changed since 2002. One pertinent data set would be what rate of incidence has occurred before the Boston revelations and after, and how many current allegations go back to events before that watershed.

Of course it is still going on, as it will always happen at some incidence, but what comparative data is there? How can progress be measured in the question?

Well, it's certainly not getting swept under the rug any longer. Our Attorney General here in Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, has made abuses here public.

But are things different now? Probably. Public opinion is different. Nobody believes the Church can do no wrong. Nobody approves of sex with children.
It's not so easy to look the other way.

The pope has just told the mafia that they cannot be believers.

Because it is so open now, I believe that there will be fewer abuses and will be caught sooner. I hadn't heard what nyctopgam said.

That is a reduction of what he actually said in Palermo. He called upon them to stop thinking only of their money and power, and he called them brothers and sisters.

He basically delivered the same message that John Paul II did decades ago.

How shocking that any evangelist would decry the organized crime syndicate that extorts, murders, and bleeds the locals dry for merely doing business where the mafia rules like the gang they are. Unrepentant murderers have always been damned by the dogma of the Church and the text upon which they base it.

The pope was cheered by tens of thousands for his remarks by the very people who live under the rule of the mafia in Palermo. It sounds like they agreed with him.

And contrary to the spin of the current media coverage, it sounds like Catholics still believe he has plenty of moral authority. They don't appear to be quite ready to lock the doors and let the street people finish trashing the churches.

    Erm, surely that's 1.3 billion.

That's not true. There are still plenty of blinkered idiots who blindly believe what the church says

Yes, thank you. I work with millions at work constantly, so it is probably negative transfer. I meant billion.

That happens to be one of the rationalizations about why the Vatican did not move more decisively earlier, believing it to be an American problem. There is also the inertia of the bureaucracy. At every level, the prelates tend to try to shape the message that goes up, spinning it.

Although that is undeniably true, the evidence is that those in government are through giving the See of Rome, and its branches and courts, a pass when it comes to reporting and prosecution. And, obviously the reformers within the Church have been loud and public, speaking on television and in the press about the crimes in the Church.

I think what Thaad posted is true. The tide has turned. Unfortunately, for those who want to wish religion into non-existence, it hasn't marked the end of the Catholic institution. It has meant a changed attitude from within and without. The Church has weathered worse crises and corruption, and survived it. It won't be going away because a small bunch of people out there think it's wrong in everything it does.

    .
If you watch the film you will see that at every turn they were thwarted by the church, the courts and the politicians
