    Thank you for your service...

I don't say that to everyone who was ever in the military. When I grew up most vets. were ww2 guys and felt like they had done what was needed and didn't look for a pat on the back every day. Veterans day once a year was in hour of those who had served. Memorial day was in hour of those who lost their lives in service.

I have a relative that stayed fat to avoid the draft, he let it be known that it was intentional. I have been with him when he thanks veterans. I find it hollow at best. Maybe 'thanks for taking my place' would be better.

I have 2 relatives that are firemen. On 9-11 every year I see them in uniform on FB, they are called 'heroes' by some in the family because of 9-11, even though they weren't in puberty when it happened.
    What ever happened to humility?

The US military is one big exercise in dick-measuring. There is a tingle of sincerity in that these men put their lives at risk, "for what" is arguable. Colin is being blasted out of this world for exercising the freedoms that they're allegedly fighting for. I'm on your side, it's a lot of times just "Thanks, better you than me." And really our powerful if incompetent and grossly mismanaged military is one of the few bragging rights we have left since our government, healthcare, education and general culture are shot to hell.

I wanted to join the air force when I was a teen but was rejected because I am an insulin dependent diabetic. But to say I appreciate our folks in the forces is an understatement.

Police have thankless jobs. Firemen have thankless jobs. Teachers have thankless jobs. Nobody say's 'thank you for your service' to them.

I have said thank you to the garbage men, the kid who bagged my groceries as well as the guy who handed me my coffee at a dive through. Every job is important. Needless to say I am thankful for all who keep our country up and running.

I suppose television promotes it. Game shows, court shows, talk shows, etc. Whenever a member of the military appears, the host invariably thanks them for their service. No so for police, firemen, or teachers.

A lot of if is cheap lip service, otherwise we wouldn't have a single, let alone so many, homeless, starving vets with no access to medical care.

"Thanks for your service, now good fucking luck trying to be a regular person again with your PTSD and waiting a month just to talk to a subpar healthcare specialist for ten minutes."

Americans love symbols of things more than the actual things. Wombs. Soldiers. Flags. et cetera.

Not to demean what teachers, firemen and cops do, but they get paid and chose to do it. I appreciate them, but I have seen firemen at Krogers doing a run to stock up on kitchen supplies for the firehouse get stopped by people who want to thank them.
The firemen acted somewhat embarrassed. All three of these professions are hazardous in the USA. The whole thank you thing just doesn't feel right.

I recently read that servicemen who have recently returned from overseas duty really don't like being told, "Thank you for your service." They prefer, "Welcome home."

Yes, they do. Back in the day that we had the draft many vets came back from Nam and were spit on, I guess that the thank yous are the pendulum swinging the other way.

Welcome home seems to ring true.
