What to do if a live power line falls on your car

While reading about Hurricane Florence, I came across useful info about having a live power line wire on your car. The advice is normally to stay inside, and the electricity will harmlessly go around you. In some cases, you have to get out before help arrives.

Jump out with both feet together, making sure that you are not touching any part of the vehicle when your feet hit the ground. You can touch the vehicle while getting out, before your feet leave the interior. (You'd probably need to brace yourself in the doorway before jumping.)

It's important to land with both feet hitting the ground at the same time. Hop or shuffle to move away, keeping your feet as close together as possible. One site said to do this for the first 35 feet from the wire.

Sounds scary...if you're not really careful it can be very easy to fall.

Indeed. If you are touching the car, even with your pinky finger, when you touch the ground, you become the conduit. And if someone reaches out to help pull you out, both of you become the conduit. Don't forget that, either.

Great advice. When I worked at the TV station we had to take training on this, because of the boom on the live truck. Very important that BOTH feet hit the ground at the same time.
