I have not had a ticket since I was 19...

No accidents since the late '70's. My wife who still has a license but no longer drives has never had a ticket or accident. I just got a notice that my auto insurance will go up again. In 2 years it is a $70. per month increase. I had heard that Michigan was the worst state for auto ins.
    Do you get annual increases?

I don't really notice if ours goes up or not. Do they give you a reason? Does auto insurance go up after age 65?

Yes mine goes up yearly. I bitch about it. They say it is just costs, nothing I did since I have never had a ticket. I am currently with PEMCO. They only cover people in Washington and Oregon and they by far had the best rates. I got more car coverage plus added renters coverage for about $30 less a month than Nationwide, who I had last.

Remember when you are buying insurance that you are part of a communal risk pool. While you have not had accidents, other people do. And yes, the costs keep rising each year, so all the people who are part of that pool have to pay to cover the losses, as well as paying the overhead and administration costs for the company which also keep rising...and of course, pay the management salaries which also keep rising and pay the shareholders of the company a return on their investment.

$70 seems like a bargain now, doesn't it?

Shop around for a better rate with another provider. Every few years I do. They'll want a copy of your current coverage so they can quote a price equal to what coverage you have. I asked an agent one time if it effected my rate if I change providers routinely...she said it doesn't. She actually encouraged me to do so, and said to check again with her next year to see if her supplier's rates dropped.

All the above, and the price of new vehicles and repairs.

Maybe your car isn't/wasn't expensive, don't know, but you are sharing the highway with some very pricey vehicles - driven, perhaps, by high risk drivers.

Also, check with the company to see if taking your wife, as an additional driver in the household, off the policy would help.

Why pay for something that's not going to be used, right?

No, not really. $70. is the total increase in the past year along with this years increase. That puts me at $170. per month for minimum coverage.

For one car or multiple? That's ridiculous if it's only one. I'm only paying $68 for 2 drivers, full coverage and $500 deductible. That's with a no-fault accident on the record.

Progressive, BTW. I've had them since I started driving and have never had a bad experience.

My car insurance renewal quote went up by about 30% this year. I checked a price comparison site and the cheapest comparible policy was incredibly with the same insurer and for about 100 less. I rang them up and they renewed at the lower price. Just goes to show that insurance companies rely on lethargy and hike up premiums each year well above what they'd charge a new customer in the hope that most people will just pay it. They're crooks. Always shop around.

It's mostly the MCCA increases. EVERYONE, Statewide, pays a set fee in order to have no-cap Medical coverage, and it's gone up a LOT the last couple of years.

I believe Michigan is the only State with such coverage.

You might do a little better by shopping around, but do the math, especially if you have a bundle with your Homeowner's insurance. If you switch, your auto generally goes down but the Homeowner's insurance sometimes goes through the roof (see what I did there?).

Good luck, Michigan sucks with auto insurance.

That is THE reason I do not authorize recurring bank drafts. When I do it manually online for each bill, I see if they are hiking anything. Cable companies, phone companies, utilities, insurance, and others count on people getting busy and not noticing.

That does sound like a hefty increase. You probably should shop around.

I looked in to what was going on. I turned 65 last year. In Michigan if you are on Medicare your car insurance must become your primary coverage in case of an accident. So when the coverage shifted upon renewal my premium went up. I have 2 cars insured now. I am putting one into storage (It runs too good to sell it), also my wife still has a license but doesn't drive so we listed her as an excluded driver. These 2 moves brought the monthly bill down to $68.
I have checked with 4 different insurance companies on this.

You still have comprehensive coverage on the car in storage though...right? $68 seems to be a good rate per month...I pay about $70/month for my suv.
