If you could read my Mind - Viola Wills. Her version was dreary disco

Now, this is the real deal!

Mariah Carey "Emotions" a direct rip-off of the song by the group The Emotions, whose title was "I don't Want to Lose Your Love"

And now for the Original - albeit with a different title. the melody is identical and they did their in 1977. Carey's in 1991-2

Pat Boone routinely covered songs by Black artists . But again, Black music was "race music," and White audiences did not want to hear Black singers. So pat Boone's version was sanitized (and pitiful).

Now hear little Richard's version which was far better - but too Black for White audiences

See, some things actually DO change for the better.

An explanation of the 50s, when Black music was called "race music," and stolen and "cleaned up by White Artists. A disgusting period in American music until the British Invasion, where they freely admitted their reverence of Black blues and Jazz artists.

Re: Covers that were worse than the original

This was as easier match for me than the other thread. There are so many.

I will NOT be posting vids of the covers.

The original 2000's-era male British bands who did these songs have been overshadowed by their plagiarizing female solo counterparts.

Leona Lewis did a bland diva cover of "Run" which was a U.K. No. 1. The Snow Patrol version was far superior.

Many people including Lily Allen have done covers of "Somewhere Only We Know" (U.K. No. 1 for her) - the Keane version is still the best.

And finally to all the people who think Amy Winehouse sang "Valerie" - I remember the Zutons version of it.

This was not back in the mists of time - this was just the early and mid 2000's!

Fifteen years ago. You'd think it was the dark ages.

Re: Covers that were worse than the original

    GREAT:

    VILE:

I have an interesting and fun life experience with this comparison. This happened 12 or 13 years ago.

There's a small non-profit community radio station in the small town I've been living for more than thirty years. (I live in Chicago, but I'm back in the small town for the summer.) This radio station signed on the air in the early 00's.

I'm old enough to remember the Roy Orbison version (from 1962) well, as are the people who were doing the live Friday Night music and talk show at the time, and I have always agreed with them...Roy Orbison is the definitive version, but I'd choose a few hours of fingernails-scraping-the-chalkboard instead of the Linda Ronstadt version. They were playing the Roy Orbison version on that Friday night, years ago. That night they had a guest (a second co-host) for that show, who was also on the air with them.

    I remember thinking something like
"OH MY GOD YES, they're playing the RIGHT version! - yes, Roy Orbison. Y'know, I can sort of imagine somebody who heard the Linda Ronstadt version first (because they're too young to have heard the NEVER-played-anywhere-anymore Orbison version) hearing this, and thinking to themselves something like OH MY GOD, THIS VERSION IS AWFUL!!

I mean, these two versions are SO different!"
The song ended, and the guest quickly said something like "Eccccch...what was THAT piece of rubbish???" You played the wrong version!"

So funny that he said something exactly like I was visualizing - he was about 20 years younger than the rest of us, and too young to have heard the Roy Orbison version.
"Some people without brains do an awful lot of talking." -The Scarecrow, WIZARD OF OZ, 1939
WASHINGTON: I can't tell a lie. NIXON: I can't tell the truth. TRUMP: I can't tell the difference.
Make, for a man, a fire - and he'll be warm for a few hours. Set a man afire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
"MAKE ORWELL FICTION AGAIN!" This is my response to MAGA.

British girl-group the All Saints also released a cover of "Lady Marmalade", which was a U.K. No. 1 in 1998.

Chart factoid: It was a double A-side with "Under the Bridge" - itself a cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers song.

Oh and that Christina Aguilera / Lil Kim / Mya / Pink cover was also a U.K. No. 1 in 2002. I don't think the original ever was.

Reminds me of "Against All Odds" (Take a Look at Me Now) which never was a No. 1 for Phil Collins in the 1980's, and YET it twice became a No. 1 hit in cover version for others, first for Irish boy band Westlife featuring Mariah Carey in 2000, and then second for original U.K. X-Factor winner Steve Brookstein in 2005.

    Reminds me of "Unchained Melody".

This is embarrassing to confess: I much prefer the Robson and Jerome version - because it was the first time I heard the song. I never knew anything else!

    Summer 1995. (and yes - another U.K. No. 1)

I was a nerd for keeping track of the pop charts for 15 years (1994-2009)

More chart factoids: Unchained Melody was again a U.K. No. 1 for Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates in 2002.

Oh and I can't let "covers I really like despite me knowing they may be inferior" without this one:

Boyzone, Christmas 1995. It was kept off Christmas No. 1 by Michael Jackson "Earth Song" if I remember correctly.

I really like this but again, I had no realisation it was a cover!

I can't let Boyzone rest without also mentioning "Words".

It was their first (are you getting tired of this yet? ) U.K. No. 1 in 1996.

This and "Father and Son" are my two favourite Boyzone songs - but I never knew either were covers and I much prefer these to the originals!

OMG what a great discovery: it's a mixture of Mado Robin and Florence Foster Jenkins

And they would complain about the hypersexed-up minxes being marketed as legitimate singers today...

Just because those covers reached No. 1 on the charts doesn't mean they're good.

The Madonna version doesn't sound so bad, now does it? I have to admit I like the Madonna version.
