Barry Humphries, Dadaism, Dame Edna and a retrospective

I stumbled across this documentary when I was perusing YouTube and it was quite good.

A long time fan, I had no idea Humphries' characters were born in his admiration of Dadaism. It was intriguing to hear his own analysis of his career.

Full disclosure, it's a long program as opposed to 3-min. video, but I suspect there are fans here who may not have seen it and would enjoy it as I did.

We saw Dame Edna on Broadway a few years ago. We still laugh at things she said. We had a Blast!

Re: Barry Humphries, Dadaism, Dame Edna and a retrospective

I watched about 5 minutes of it and had to stop. Not voluntarily, though. I'll be back to watch the rest when I have more time.

I know Humphries only through Dame Edna. I don't think I've ever even seen the man behind the glasses, but even in that first 5 minutes, I realised why I hadn't. He doesn't want to be famous for himself. He wants to be famous for his characters.

I'm looking forward to watching the remaining 42 minutes.

Florida has it's own Dame Edna impersonator. Very funny guy, I actually saw him perform once at a private party in Fort Lauderdale.

London has its own Dame Edna

The London sendup lacks charm. Dame Edna is a very carefully contrived "nice" character, lampooning niceness itself.

Making her crude departs so far from the created character that it is just a farce instead of being clever humor.

It reminds me of the difference between fast food and fine food. There's a market for both.
