Serious Jersey Grandmother dies when oxygen machine shuts off from Electric company shutting off Power

Appalling, no matter how you look at it. Electric company (PSE&G ) in New Jersey, says, "We didn't know dying grandmother was on oxygen," but family says hospice workers called and notified electric company of woman's condition (which IS part of how hospice workers assist families with terminally ill members).

I've seen the article on three different sites, with three different sets of information:

    https://www.nj.com/essex/index.ssf/2...r_payment.html

    https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/...d-13059153.php

and the original story from The Washington Post (picked up by SFGate.com)

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.6859d41baf9d

A horrible way to go, with the family watching the mother/grandmother die.
And please, there have been enough comments on other sites about "why didn't they move her?" H.O.S.P.I.C.E care. She was on her deathbed. But did the family do everything they could have or did they just panic? They called the electric company. That should have been enough right there.
    I see...lawsuits.

It's a shame, but they could have moved her.

Lots of things should be the way the world works, but they aren't.

Big companies, utilities, and bureaucracies are notorious for ineptness. None of that removes the family's responsibility to do everything possible for the woman, and standing by while she dies needlessly goes against them.

The utility was wrong. The family was wrong. Who will sue the family? If justice is what we're after, then the family should face their own justice.

We have procedures in the UK which, hopefully, would have prevented this happening
Power companies have to prioritise users like her

Same here. Clients are given ample warnings, usually months in advance. On the day of the 'shut-off', they have to make every effort to alert the home owners that they are about to be cut off. They simply cannot march onto the property to do it. They give the clients one last chance to pay the bill or to make some arrangement with the power company.

    Pay your electric bill

If she's in hospice care why is she on oxygen?

Hospice means you go home to die. I knew someone who was on it, they gave the family a choice of putting the person who was ill for over decade a choice of a feeding tube or letting them go home to die and giving them pain meds, After that they won't try to even revive them if a nurse or caretaker is there.

Oxygen is used if it brings comfort. It's all about comfort at the end of life. It's not about forestalling death. Morphine is used successfully to ease breathing and probably contributes to death because it slows the respiration. I think I read that this woman was struggling to breath and was alert, so the use of oxygen is seen as a comfort measure.
Something about this story does not sit right with me. Utility companies here would work with people and would not turn off the power without a fairly lengthy process. It's the law. In my cold weather state, it's law that power cannot be turned off in the winter. I imagine the same would be true in hot weather states, like desert states.
I can't answer for every state, but hospice probably registered the woman as a pending home death so that police don't have to be involved post-death. That would carry weight with a utility company.

Our PSEG would never shut you off without extensive notifications over a very long period of time and literally thousands of dollars owed. And for someone with health issues its almost unheard of.

Hospice care isn't always only end of life care. My grandfather was home on hospice care after a stroke for over a year. They helped my grandmother take care of him with feeding, clearing his lungs and bathing during the day. They couldn't find a nursing home that would take him in that condition, there was a very long waiting list at the time.

    Very sad.

We live in an age of diminishing compassion.

Instead of spending their money on jets and fighting homo marriage....this is the type of thing the Churches and compassionate organizations should be tending to.

Did the family reach out to a church or any other organization? There are many that would help but they have to know of the need first.

While I understand not everyone has the means and support system of others, if you are one only telephone pole accident away from death you can't blame the power company for the situation the victim created.

A lot of shit like this is all you can see when your blindly bigoted, as you have proven yourself to be ad nauseum. It's a safe bet that if your head stays stuck up your ass, you'll only see shit.

The South isn't even in the thread. It's about New Jersey, SOUTH of New York, west of where you ran away to.

Of course the family is wrong. It cannot be said enough times. If you have notice your power will be cut, and you have exhausted all appeals with those who own and provide the power, yet you do nothing to save your grandmother, you are a poor excuse for family if you allow her to die rather than move her to a home of a friend, neighbor, relative, church member, or anyone who has electricity.

It's appalling the tendency of some to blame everyone but those responsible for such tragedies. The deceased woman's health care was not the charge of the local utility company, but her hospice care, her family, and her doctors. None of them should have allowed her to die.

And, as others have posted, it is unlikely the power company did knowingly cut power from a critically ill patient. The story is likely just more propaganda to try to stir up animus. Might check for Russian influence in promoting it. There's a track record of this sort of stuff.

Re: Jersey Grandmother dies when oxygen machine shuts off from Electric company shutting off Power

Bureaucracies make blunders, but it's really not apparent that is what happened here. From one of the linked articles:

PSE&G said in a statement Monday afternoon.

"We never would have disconnected service had we been informed of the circumstances."

PSE&G said power was disconnected because money was owed on the account.

"While there will be a complete investigation of this matter, our records indicate that this account was severely in arrears and we made at least 26 attempts to notify the customer since January, 2018, including two visits to the residence prior to the disconnection," the company said in a statement.

26 times. Good grief. She was in arrears seriously back in January, and wasn't diagnosed with the fatal condition until April. It just adds up to the family telling half-truths and blaming the utility for a death that was imminent anyway.

That doesn't mean people don't care about the deceased, but it does mean the family's account is inaccurate most likely. Sadly, there are people in this world who don't pay utility bills, water, light, gas, or whatever, and this seems to be one of them.

I couldn't imagine cutting the power without some attempt at notification. It's easy to ignore bills and notices.

Exactly, many things can cause a power outage. Her machine should have had an alarm and a battery back up and she should have had a portable canister that does not need electricity in case something does happen.

While it's a horrible tragedy it could have been prevented.

My father lives in that part of the country and has PSE&G. He pays about $55 for electricity for his house per month.

The story said at one point she was $1800 behind. That's crazy and irresponsible. If you are poor or sick, there are agencies that may be able to help you in fact the utilities have programs too but you have to find out what they are and ask for them. Plus she wasn't an old lady I think it said she was 59.

I used to live in north NJ too and I think there was a way to split your gas and electric bill. i rented so heat was included so no gas bill, I think we may have paid a small fee for cooking gas, there was some kind of competition they were trying to bring in where you could choose your provider. The only way I can think of that it got this way is that she was using gas or electric heat and heat can cost $400 a month or more if you are not careful and raise it too high.

You also have to do your due diligence. Call the company get something in writing or go in person or send someone on your behalf and make certain it's not shut off. You need to have a backup too becuase the electric is normally reliable but a thunderstorm can knock out a transformer.

I do not love PSE&G. When I lived in central New Jersey somehow they changed the billing of my account to someone else's name for the last few months of my residency. When I moved out I was charged all at once for electricty used during that time.
I was so glad to find my new home was in Atlantic City Electric's service area. They are the best.

Reading the title I could not believe it. Surely such an avoidable tragedy would never happen in a civilized European country?

But then I read this was not about Jersey at all. It's New Jersey, not the grand old bailiwick of Jersey. The title should be corrected.

What a funny thing to say. There are millions of people in Europe, and countries that don't even have electricity in unbroken service. There are hapless people the world over, and power outages the world over. As far as termination for non-payment in the extreme, I doubt any of us know the utility laws of four or five dozen countries.

Jersey is a shortened slang for New Jersey among Northeasterners. It's like saying Philly for Philadelphia. It's not inaccurate -- it's slang.

Most place in and around New York seem to be named after European places. I always have to explain that I'm from Haarlem, not Harlem.

Many slightly older Europeans know Jersey from this series.

It's both slang and inaccurate. If you use it in Manhattan it will be understood. But this forum is global. If someone here starts a thread about moving from Dallas to Perth, no-one would suppose he's just moving 100 miles within northern Scotland.

Is England civilized? I've seen shows with people on the dole there and they have to spend their last few dollars to put credits on their meters so they have power. At least we give people credit and don't just have timers that shut down if you don't prepay for power.
