Tab Hunter has died at age 86

There are still too few celebrities who are out gay males.

He at least came out after his career. I hope his example makes it easy for more and more men to come out when they are yet in the limelight.

    Rest in peace, Mr. Hunter.

A couple of more pics show Hunter as he aged, and he aged very well indeed:

Very worth it indeed. It's so sad that so many of those 'heartthrobs' were forced to pretend they were straight.

In retrospect, they were no more forced than non-celebrities. No one was out in the 50's with impunity.

Not according to Tab and Rock. Their careers depended upon it.

    EDIT: And Tony, too.

My point being is that they chose a career in which there was no tolerance for out gays. They nonetheless chose it. So "forced" is a bit of a misnomer when they chose to comply. It wasn't like they could not have been waiters or decorators or gardeners or many other jobs. They chose a job and being closeted and became rich for their sacrifices.

And my point was that they had no choice. They were too valuable to the studio. They chose their career. They didn't choose to be told who to date and who to marry. That was force upon them if they wished to continue doing what they loved doing.

You have to remember that, back then, the studios owned their actors and actresses. They did what they were told. They were, quite literally, paid slaves.

This, not only actors could loose their job by being gay, but most other careers could also be affected by being gay in the 50's and even beyond.

Re: Tab Hunter has died at age 86

A book that everyone should read is Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars by Scotty Bowers. It was published in 2012.

While homosexuality was not politically correct back in the day, there was a whole existing gay sub-culture in Hollywood, and this book talks about it.

Tab Hunter was a Hollywood creation. His real name was Arthur Andrew Kelm. He did what he had to do in order to move his career ahead. The same applies for Anthony Perkins.

If they were starting out today, being gay would only be a footnote in their biography. Back then, it was a major scandal.

    It's really a shame...

I read his biography, too. He seemed like a decent guy. May Tab rest in peace.

That is my point. It was literally a crime.

Suggesting that they were more enslaved to the studios than others is unfair. All the actors signed contracts. They chose to give up rights in exchange for money, fame, glamor, and the like.

Slaves in most cultures have been captives, although we know some peoples sold themselves into slavery.

As we imagine slavery today to be involuntary, it is unfair to suggest that gays in Hollywood had no choice. They made their choice, perhaps Faustian bargains, but they chose their paths.

Nobody is denying that, not even me. Yes, gay people today may lose their jobs just for being gay, but bosses these days do not dictate how their employees must live their lives. They are not told who to date, who not to date, who to be seen in public with, who to marry (even as a cover-up marriage), and so on.

Tony and Tab had a real thing going. They easily and happily could have spent their lives together but the studio wouldn't allow it. Actors these days do not live with the same rules. They are paid by the studios, but they are not owned by them, and their lives are not dictated by them.

I came along too late to have ever been a fan, but he certainly was a looker.

He seems to have had a happy life, maybe more so than Cary Grant.

It is good to be alive at a later time, even though some of the charm of the past is gone.

It was a difficult one, though. His mother divorced his abusive father when he was young and was raised by his mother. They had an extremely close relationship and she supported him throughout her life. When he was older, Tab tracked down his father (in New York, I believe) and went to see him. His father's wife answered the door and he could see his father sitting in a chair reading a newspaper. He refused to even acknowledge his son. Tab never saw him again.

His older brother, Walter Gelien, who Tab adored, was a casualty of the Vietnam War. (When their mother, Gertrude, divorced their father, she switched back to her maiden name, 'Gelien', and had the boys' names legally changed as well.)

By the way, the studio threw Tab under the bus, literally outing him, to protect Rock Hudson. It was pretty-much the end of his career.

I was born long, long, long after his career, but as I am very fond of history, old movies and vintage items, I had come across his sexy pics before. But I admit I never saw any of his movies, at least not because of him. I may have seen a few that he happened to play in.

I dare say most people I have met have had a difficult life in one way or another. Are they equally so? Hardly.

But, like the Buddhist concept teaches, life is a struggle. What I meant is that Tab (Arthur) seems to have had a good life all in all. He had fame, love, success, wealth, privilege, and a long number of years to experience life.

Yes, he had all the tyranny of the studio system, the homophobia of not just Western societies but of the planet, and a number of private woes we know nothing of.

I didn't say he was wrong. I said the studios told them how to act, who to see, who to date and so on. No other employer made such demands on their employees in order to keep their jobs. Politicians, teachers, lawyers, postmen, hairdressers, and every other gay person did so voluntarily to keep their jobs. It was never part of their 'job description'.

The studios literally owned their actors and ruled their lives. And that applied to ALL the actors and actresses back in those days, not just gay people. They all had to do what was best for the studios.

This crap went on all the time. Even 'Disney Kids' were not immune. Annette Funicello was not allowed to show her navel in public let alone in her movies or on television. Tommy Kirk was 'released from his Disney contract' (i.e. fired) when word got out that he was seeing another boy.

It happened all the time. If you had a contract with a studio, they told you how to live your life. No other employer did that. Sure, they could fire people for being gay as you suggest, but none of them told their 'people' how to live their lives in order to keep their jobs. Not even priests.

But they didn't do so unilaterally. The actor and his agent signed away his rights. It is within the choice of any man to lay down his rights in order to gain what he thinks more valuable than rights. If it is a Faustian bargain, then more word to the wise to take heed.

As teenager I had crush of Tab Hunter seeing in movie Damn Yankees. This was era of homophobia and word gay was taboo. Like Tab I struggled with my sexuality and came out. Tab live his life had partner and his book revealed his struggles. Today young gays have persons they can look up to have also come out.

tab was one of the only real stars i met while working in hollywood. he came to a dinner party, late, explaining his georgian silver had just been stolen, and charmed the room. he and i talked some in the kitchen,he was very handsome. i was told he thought i was cute, with a nice ass. this was in the late 70's, when i was very naive. i was 'dating' the host of the party, but it seemed i was supposed to let myself be shared...passed around by this circle of men. that wasn't my style, but tab was a wonderful man to meet. may he rest in peace.

On actors and their choices: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood...william-haines

It could be argued that it was easier for Haines to walk away from the screen after he'd been to the top. A man who hadn't gotten a break yet might find it too hard.

And the opposite could be argued: a man at the height of his power may be the most loath to let it go.

At any rate, Crawford was an interesting ally.

You still can't be a leading man and major star and be publicly gay. Matt Bomer may play a leading man on television, but he's not a major movie star. Hell, Roberto Bolle' is arguably the greatest male ballet dancer of the past decade and a major celebrity in Italy and he's not really out, and he's a ballet dancer for chrissake.

From what I've heard from friends who know Cary Grant's last wife, he was a very happy man during their marriage.
