Newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Beats Democrat Rep. Joe Crowley In Primary | The 11th Hour | MSNBC

In the New York primaries, on Tuesday [June 26, 2018], the No. 4-ranking U.S. House Democrat, Joe Crowley, was unseated with his bid for re-nomination by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for New York’s 14th Congressional District.

Crowley is a corporate Democrat. Ocasio-Cortez is a Democratic socialist.

On this outcome, The New York Times [ http://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/27/ny...gtype=Homepage ] writes: “
Mr. Crowley, who is twice Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s age, is the No. 4 Democrat in the House of Representatives and had been favored to ascend to the speaker’s lectern if Democrats retook the lower chamber this fall.

This is good. This is very good. This needs to happen much more often. The Republican primaries voters have been much more willing to deny re-nominations to incumbents who need to go. (Last week, South Carolina said no to U.S. Rep. and former governor Mark Sanford.) The Democratic primaries voters need to be doing that. Numerous U.S. senators, especially. This is about representation. And if you have a party incumbent who does not represent, you are well within reason to deny that incumbent re-nomination.

The above, linked video is coverage from MSNBC.

I agree. Ocasio-Cortez showed us that grass roots activism can defeat a large campaign war chest. She ran without accepting corporate PAC donations and was endorsed by Our Revolution. True to her convictions, she spent the final weekend of the campaign in Texas protesting outside a child detention center.

If Ocasio-Cortez is elected in November, she will be the youngest member of the House of Representatives.

I love absolutely everything about this!
This is what we need, people who know what its like to work middle class, to know what its like for people to struggle just to make ends meet and will fight for them and not which mega donor funnels the largest number of cash into their campaign.

I always knew this would be the eventual direction of the dems, just glad that its sooner rather than later. Hopefully this is a preview of what's to come in 2020.

Good to see. NOTHING should be taken for granted, and the best way for the party leadership to win over progressives, even when there is some level of realistic and rightful disagreement about policies, is to welcome and engage and include them in the process... it's serious business to govern effectively and compromise has to be sometimes made to get things done, but cynicism, opportunism and establishment insider politics as usual will only defeat the Democrats chances to retake one or both houses of Congress. We cannot afford more of the GOP's war on the 98%... please for the sake of Americans who want an America for all and not the powerful, privileged, extreme right version we could easily fall into, I hope the Democratic leadership will take the message of these election victories of progressives to heart and build up a party that really puts the people first and foremost.
