I'm sure it's an terrible deal. Awful deal. Worst deal ever. I'm sure he could negotiate a better deal where we get to torture prisoners and house them at Trump-owned properties indefinitely.

    Oh wait...
Detained kids could live in Trump hotel suite for less than tent city [The Silicon Post]
According to NBC News, it costs the Department of Health and Human Services an average of $775 per person per night to house detained children in the temporary shelters near the US border.

Business Insider found several suites available in the Trump Hotel range for less than that, including a junior suite in the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., offered at $757 before taxes for the night of June 23.
Let's pause for a moment here for the math.
    2,300 children * $775/child/night = $1,741,100 per night

Ya know, it's the law. And we're supposed to be a country of laws.

A decade ago, we went through a situation where the Vice President and Defense Secretary decided that we should torture prisoners. Times were desperate- there had been a devastating terrorist attack and a war. Even though the torture decision was a questionable decision, there was still a process of legal review. There wasn't a Decree from the King saying that it was okay. There were lawyers who looked at the law and there were discussions with Congress.

What has happened here is that a few Trump Administration officials have been instructed by Trump to turn the screws on immigrants at the border, probably in response to stories on Fox News about "immigrant caravans". Someone had the genius idea of separating children from their parents. They probably thought that this would play great with "their base" in an election year.

No one went through the usual processes of, "Is this legal?", "Is it humane?", "Is there another option?", "How do we get those kids reunited with their parents?"

Instead we got this announcement delivered with a grin:

I've heard of kids as young as 3 or 4 having to appear in court....but how is this even possible?

At what point is a process so broken that it swallows the soul of a nation?

Better yet let's deport illegal Melania, and her chain migration family, put Junior, the stupid one, Ivanka and anchor baby Barron in cages then send them off to undisclosed locations never to be recovered.

At least the 1 year old had an attorney.

Judge John Richardson said he was “embarrassed to ask” if Johan understood the proceedings, AP reported. “I don’t know who you would explain it to, unless you think that a 1-year-old could learn immigration law,” he told Johan’s attorney.

Anyone know how much all this has cost the American taxpayers? Could it all be just a cry from Trump to say, "Look how much money I'll save you if you just give me my fucking wall!!"

The Congress isn't asking because they don't want to know.

See post #101 for the estimated cost for bed and board for the children:
    2,300 children * $775/child/night = $1,741,100 per night

Since the government can't give the courts an actual number and Azar has said it could be as high as 3,000 children...

I saw that, but I was wondering about all the other stuff as well: court costs, adult incarceration, transportation, deportation, food, etc. The grand total must be well on the way to being a billion or more.

Azar is another wonderful person. Under questioning, sorry I do not remember by whom, he stated that the whole crisis
would be over with with just a few key strokes on a computer. 2 extensions by a judge later, we know he is just another
lying member of the Trump administration. Does anyone in his administration ever tell the truth?

It's a good question but one that we won't get an answer to unless Ron Johnson (R-WI, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee) asks or until after November's election.

Even if the question is asked, the costs are spread across multiple agencies (DHS, HHS, DOJ) and a lot of the cost is money that is going to private companies- like the companies that operate the private prisons and childcare facilities.

During the lead up to the 2016 election, there was a discussion about the billions of dollars that it would take to round-up immigrants and deport them. Everyone said that it was too expensive and the US government would never do it. Well, guess what....

Oh, it's a given that no answer will be forthcoming, but I'm sure it wouldn't be as much as Trump's golf outings.

So here is an interesting twist, while trying to reunite all the 5 and under children with their families, the DOJ discovers one of the children may be an American Citizen taken over a year ago and they LOST the mother.

One child “cannot be reunified at this time because the parent’s location has been unknown for more than a year,” the filing said. “Defendants are unable to conclusively determine whether the parent is a class member, and records show the parent and child might be U.S. citizens.”
Border officials may have taken child of US citizen into custody

When you add reports of Hispanic citizens being arrested, it starting to sound like Operation Wetback in the 50s all over again where along with the illegals rounded up, many US citizens were grabbed as well and dumped in deserts in Mexico with no food or water.

^ As usual, Trump doesn't have a fucking clue how to run a country. It didn't work when he stole from Peter to pay Paul when it came to his hotels and casinos, and it certainly doesn't work when stealing from one government department to pay for his fuck-ups.

I just hope the United States survives his first term.

The clues are beginning to surface:
Trump’s Office of Refugee Resettlement Is Budgeting for a Surge in Child Separations [Slate]
There are currently about 11,800 children in ORR’s care. Alex Azar, the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, has stated that somewhere between 2,000 and 3,000 of those children were separated from their parents at the border. The remaining children in ORR custody are unaccompanied minors—children who crossed the border without a parent or guardian.

...The ORR’s budgeting exercise is premised on the possibility that the agency could need as many as 25,400 beds for immigrant minors by the end of the calendar year...

The internal documents estimate that if 25,400 beds are needed, ORR would face a budget shortfall of $585 million for ORR in fiscal year 2018, which ends on Sept. 30. Under this scenario, that shortfall would increase to $1.3 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2019, adding up to a total shortfall of $1.9 billion for the period between Oct. 1, 2017, and Dec. 31, 2018...

The documents also indicate that HHS plans to pay for child separation by reallocating money from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which, according to its website, “provides a comprehensive system of care that includes primary medical care and essential support services for people living with HIV who are uninsured or underinsured.” Per the documents, the process of transferring those HIV/AIDS funds has already begun.
