    Is Democracy in Crisis?

    your thoughts ...

I like the freedom, but to get things done seems very very slow and weak.
And let the extremists get away with things.

Victim of PC police. Some of the PC police are good at making untrue things up about other jub members. Remember folks, i am non-white and a minority. So i know what a real victim of racism and not the fake ones.

    Re: Is Democracy in Crisis?

It's not a democracy thing, but a governmental thing, and by definition. There is always limited revenue, no matter what the government type. Deciding on how to prioritize needs is the definition of crisis, to make an important and difficult decision.

Whether city, county, state, or federal government, it is perpetually in crisis. The whole legislative process is the process of resolving crisis. To the degree that men fail or succeed is a testament forever of the willingness to compromise and succeed, or stalemate and fail.

In the US, since the 60's, we have been in an era of remarkable failure of government, marked by inaction more than anything, followed by retraction of the tax code to allow ever more wealth disparity. Our infrastructure has crumbled, our hospitals became privatized and medical care providers became obscenely wealthy. Meanwhile the bi-party system has pivoted between selfish reactionaries and lying reformers, to the end that whenever the Democrats hold power nationally, they have been forced to the center due to the erosion of their mandate, and whenever the Republicans ascend, they are forced to right of center due to the influence of their extremists who play the coalition game much better than the scattered opposition.

Let's see what the EU does in the face of migrants, losing allies America and UK, and the rise of the nationalist rightwing. The future of democracy lies there I think.

^ I don't think that the EU has lost America as an ally. Only Trump.

    Re: Is Democracy in Crisis?

Democracy is in crisis, as is the Republic. The entire electoral process is in question: GOP gerrymandering and creating voting laws to keep minorities away from the polls. The Russian government basically elected the current regime, and POTUS and his crew beller that the Special Counsel's investigation into what now appears very real foreign manipulation a "Witch Hunt!"....Even while the same POTUS is on his way to essentially thank Putin and the Russians for all their support.
Moreover, we are still saddled with the arcane Electoral College system, which makes winners out of losers. Even the 2-Party System is failing. What do you do when one of them takes power and goes off the rails? Dunno. This has never happened before. Trumpsky and his comrades have polarized the country to the point where the middle ground -- the balast that kept ship afloat -- is stretched way thin. Much is written of Tribalism. The GOP loyaty is to Big Chief Trumpsky rather than to the our national interests. Save the Chief, right or wrong makes no difference. He and his campaign and his family and his lawyers and friends all knew what the Russians were doing, and were eager to meet and work with Russian agents to WIN. Winning is everything. It's a sports fan mentality. I saw a cartoon just today. Two archetype rednecks sitting at a bar: "We're really upsetting the Snow Flakes! Isn't that winning?" So to POTUS, the Administration, both Houses of Congress and a great many Americans, he doesn't have to make sense nor promote the common good nor secure the future of our country or the World....hell, he doen't even have to be ethical or within the law...to the Tribe all of this pales in comparison to the wonder and joy which is Donald J. Trumpsky. The government and half the country is a cult of personality irregardless of what he says, does or fails to do. Reporting his sophomoric acting out, lack of empathy, misogyny, racism, narcissism and incompetence becomes "Fake News." To his base, criticism makes POTUS a persecuted figure who has to be defended...if only to justify their own misplaced faith in him.

    Re: Is Democracy in Crisis?

it's in crisis here---just now in the joint press conference with his master Putin---trump the traitor turned his back on all of our democratic principles and stood firmly with Putin and of course he should be impeached just for failing to preserve and protect America----decent people are speechless at the display by this evil man right now---yet really we have no way of removing him--getting rid of this cancer --too many republicans will support this traitor to the end---2 and a half years from now may be too late.
