Trump and the G-7. The other 6 plan on letting Trump know how they feel about his tariffs. Trump, meanwhile, hopes to convince them to let Russia 'back in'.

LA MALBAIE, Quebec (AP) — President Donald Trump charged into a summit of major industrialized nations on Friday for contentious trade talks, injecting fresh drama into an already tense meeting by calling for the reinstatement of Russia, which was ousted for its annexation of Crimea.

Trump made the comment at the White House Friday after hours of further escalating his rhetoric against longtime allies over U.S. trade practices.

"Why are we having a meeting without Russia in the meeting?" Trump asked. "They should let Russia come back in because we should have Russia at the negotiating table."

So in what must be a first, the US won't be signing the G7 communique.

Since none of us ever thought the US would be signing anything....and even if they did....they would just do the opposite anyway....it is hardly a surprise.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/whi...rudeau-n881761

And I would say to the people like John McCain. Save your breath.

Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, on Twitter sought to reassure U.S. allies Saturday evening.

"To our allies: bipartisan majorities of Americans remain pro-free trade, pro-globalization & supportive of alliances based on 70 years of shared values. Americans stand with you, even if our president doesn't," McCain said in the tweet.
The damage is already done. We all don't really care where some of the American people stand. It only matters what your government is doing. We know that at least 37% of Americans are solidly behind every single thing Trump does. That is closer to 50% than is comfortable.

Trump mentioned the 270% tariff on milk. I knew that milk production in the United States has been on the decline, so I did some snooping to find out how much. This past January, the US Department of Agriculture announced:

In its January milk production report released today, the United States Department of Agriculture reported that the number of licensed U.S. dairy farms dropped by 1,600 farms to 40,219. That’s a decline of 3.8%.

Over the past decade, the U.S. has lost nearly 17,000 dairy farms, or a decline of about 30%.
    https://www.milkbusiness.com/article...ust-over-40000

It seems to me that the problem is not the tariff. It seems to me that it's easier and cheaper to pay for Canadian milk than it is to fix the American dairy farmers.

The Toronto Star has an article on the uncensored remarks from Trudeau to Trump.......if only we could hear him say this.

However, as we thank the 45th president for finally fitting in a whirlwind visit to Canada after more than 500 days in office, let’s imagine — if only for a moment — what Trudeau could have continued to say if reflecting Canadian public opinion was his only criterion.

One of the greatest problems that Canada has had negotiating NAFTA with the US is that Trump has lied about the status of trade balance and his thugs are either lying too, or literally don't know what they are talking about.

Re: So we're not Friends Any More

An interesting piece in the New York Times gives Chrystia Freeland's take on the collapsing NAFTA negotiations, which almost all of us in Canada realized were doomed from the beginning.

Freeland said she had recently come across a “terrifying” quote from Adolf Hitler, explaining his rise to power in Germany in a time of economic uncertainty and grievance. “I will tell you what has carried me to the position I have reached,” Hitler had said. “Our political problems appeared complicated. The German people could make nothing of them. ... I, on the other hand ... reduced them to the simplest terms. The masses realized this and followed me.”

She leaned forward, a look of concern in her eyes. “How do you attract voters and public support compared with the flashiness of exciting, chaotic, fact-ignoring populism?” she asked. “The reason Hitler won was because all of the other politicians were giving complicated and difficult explanations about difficult things. Hitler just told people simple things that they wanted to hear.”

I heard on the news this morning that Trump's post-G7 Summit Twitter tirade against Trudeau is because nobody wished him well in his meeting with Kim Jong-un.

By the way, Peter Navarro has apologised for his "special place in hell" comment.

    Fuck Navarro and his 'apology'.

But yes, I heard the story as well that Trudeau did not wish him well in his Singapore adventure where Kim played Trump like a cheap fiddle.

I also read this morning that TrumpCo. have instructed the border to be 'strengthened' between Canada and the US.......which really means 'thickening' the border....which really means that customs and immigration becomes a nightmare. If we didn't have our trip this weekend into the US booked...and I didn't have to attend a meeting there....I would just say fuck it and stay home.

Trump's latest ploy to knock down NAFTA is that Canadians are crossing the border into the United States, buying things like shoes and clothes, making them look 'owned', and smuggling them back into Canada because of the enormous tariffs. He claimed that a large newspaper had recently released the story. I tried to find the story and found an article stating that Trump's story was based upon an opinion piece printed in The New York Post by a Canadian journalist who sometimes travel to the US to buy clothes that aren't available in Canada.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/19/u...s-tariffs.html

Under NAFTA, there are no tariffs on such items. There is only tax, and the tax goes both ways.

So, if Trump knows that there are no tariffs, he's lying his ass off again to get what he wants.

    But...um, wait a minute.

Shouldn't he be CELEBRATING this? Shouldn't he be happy that these Canadian "smugglers" are buying yet more goods from the USA...and leaving their money behind where it enters the U. S. economy DIRECTLY?

But of course he's proven time and again that he doesn't care about U. S. jobs (which are also provided when Canadians do this!).

What's even worse is that he was told this would happen and he effectively gave American farmers 'The Finger'.

Well the rest of us still have a hell of a lot of work cut out for us to contain this bozo and confine as much of the damage as possible to his supporters. Iím glad itís biting in the states that supported him most enthusiastically, really Iím only sad for the democrats who farm. Itís such a chore, especially as an economy that does believe in free trade weíre so used to just picking up whatever off the shelf without caring who made it or where, but itís so worth it to google all this stuff and put the US stuff back on the shelf.

I really want to see a lot more trade efforts with Europe. I know we just signed free trade with them but we still donít have all the well-developed retail options we need.

The other thing, I know weíre also planning special measures to stop other places from dumping surplus steel here, since the Americans arenít buying it any more. I agree with that, but I donít want to hold open the market for Americans to come back to when their sanity returns under a different government. If the Chinese pick up a bunch of Canadian business, Iím happy for them to keep it after Trump is gone. I want this to be a realignment, not just a blip. It costs too much to let it pass. I want to come out of this with far stronger trade links with Europe and China and Australia and if US trade never recovers, fine by me. We were too dependent on it anyway.

^ I think that this is pretty much the feeling of a lot of Canadians.

NAFTA meant that Canada lost a lot of jobs in agriculture and food processing as the plants moved to the US. Same with sectors of the auto parts industry.

We saw it all over Ontario.

As long as the overall balance of trade has remained generally neutral, it should be no big deal. But now that Trump has made it clear that he will accept nothing less than a totally one sided deal for the US...fuck that noise. Time for Canada to shift away from being the principal consumer of a lot of US produced goods and foods. Might as well get them from Europe or Asia.

We had a great lunch some months ago with one of the architects of the Canada/Europe free trade deal and discussed at length how this should allow us to wean ourselves away from the US. Now that Europe is also being beat up on trade by the US, it is the perfect opportunity to make any shift in trade permanent. It will force the US to be a better trade partner.

I want more than weaning. Our regulators made the banks demonstrate they could withstand a downturn. We should make other sectors demonstrate they can withstand a trade embargo. All of our “Vice Presidents of International Sales” need to stop flying down to Vegas and signing deals on the golf course. They need to google “potential customers in Europe” and get their asses on a plane in that direction for once. If you know Chrystia’s crowd, let’s please circulate that as a concrete policy idea for implementation.

Well, a CBS Moneywatch analyst is indicating that early signs are showing that Trump may be winning against China.

China appears more vulnerable, with Societe Generale economists estimating that the Chinese economy could lose 1 percentage point of GDP growth and upwards of four million jobs while the U.S. would suffer a modest 0.2 percentage point drag on GDP growth.

Probably one of the same 'analysts' who told us that there was no way that the World economy was going to fall off the cliff in 2008.

^ Further to this....other analysts are thinking more like this one.

“Trump is inflicting genuine economic costs on the country without necessarily achieving any particular goals,” says Josh Meltzer, a senior fellow in the Global Economy and Development program at the Brookings Institution. “Instead, we’ve raised tariffs on our allies and alienated them, which has allowed China to portray us as the global outlier.”

In the same commentary I posted ...

Another wrinkle to the China trade war story is a Reuters report that the European Union flatly rejected a proposal by Beijing to form a strategic alliance to take on the U.S. on trade. This is possibly because Europe knows deep down that China's mercantilism is real -- and that they have been guilty of similar behavior in the past.

As soon as trade normalizes, Canada will go back to buying from the U.S. what they were buying before, because if these goods were cheaper coming from China or Europe, you'd already be getting them there.

That would be the economists concept in an idealised trade model, yes.

I think you underestimate the amount of inertia behind Canadian purchasing decisions rather than just idealized trade patterns. That reversal is by no means assured and the extent to which it occurs is very much affected by “goodwill” both in the general sense and in the sense that accountants mean it, and trump is destroying both.

I think you overestimate the amount of what to call it, revenge that people will pursue when it comes to paying higher prices for a bunch of things when trump is gone.

Canadian businesses just like all are not going to lose profit in order to try and punish other people.

So, new tariffs don't apply to the Trumps. Ivanka 'walks away' Scott free. Her Chinese-made shoes and boots and clothes are tariff-free. Is anyone the least bit surprised by this? Does anyone think there is, perhaps, a conflict of interest? Does anyone think that Trump is using his position to stuff his family's bank accounts?

    (Emphasis mine.)

President Donald Trump enacted tariffs Friday morning on $34 billion worth of Chinese goods, affecting hundreds of products from boats to medical devices and auto parts. But the clothing industry was mostly spared from the tariffs, meaning Ivanka Trump’s foreign-made products for her fashion line will be unaffected.

While Trump rails at Harley-Davidson motorcycles for moving some production to Europe to dodge EU tariffs, the first daughter and senior White House adviser has never manufactured a single product for her Ivanka Trump brand on American soil.

And for now, it seems Chengdu Kameido Shoes in Sichuan province can continue to supply shoes for the Ivanka Trump brand as it has in the past. It’s currently bidding for a new contract to manufacture 140,000 pairs of shoes for Trump’s company, a spokesman told The South China Morning Post.

At this point drawing attention to the massive conflicts of interest in the Trump regime is utterly pointless unless you can force Ryan and McConnell to do something about it.

Though I am enjoying watching them get chased down in public.

Trump unquestionably comes across as a hypocrite on that issue and when these issues got brought up during the campaign about why production of his own clothing line was not in America, he cited t was because he was a smart businessman and more advantageous to produce in Mexico, etc.

Can you say 'poetic justice'? I knew you could.

FUYANG, China (Reuters) - The red, white and blue banners for U.S. President Donald Trump's second-term campaign are ready to ship, emblazoned with the words "Keep America Great!"

But they are made in eastern China and soon could be hit by punitive tariffs of Trump's own making as he ratchets up a rancorous trade dispute with Beijing.

At the Jiahao Flag Co Ltd in Anhui province, women operate sewing machines to hem the edges of "Trump 2020" flags the size of beach towels, while others fold and bundle them for delivery.

Well, Trump's trade war is working. The US trade deficit is growing and growing and growing.

The Commerce Department said Friday that the deficit in goods and services — the gap between what the US sells and what it buys from other countries — rose 7.3 per cent to $46.3 billion in June from $43.2 billion in May. U.S. exports slid 0.7 per cent to $213.8 billion; imports rose 0.6 per cent to $260.2 billion, led by increases in medicine and crude oil.

The United States ran goods deficits in June of $33.5 billion with China, up 0.9 per cent from May; $7.4 billion with Mexico, up 10.5 per cent ; and $2 billion with Canada, up 39.7 per cent .

In the first half of the year, the United States has registered a trade deficit in goods and services of $291.2 billion, up 7.2 per cent from January-June 2017.

Under NAFTA, there are no tariffs on such items. There is only tax, and the tax goes both ways.

So, if Trump knows that there are no tariffs, he's lying his ass off again to get what he wants.
