This BBC article is interesting, although to an extent it's only telling us what is pretty obvious. Children with what one might call traditional first names are more likely to attend Oxford University than those with the sort of names which have enjoyed, well, a certain council house chic.
My first name (Paul) shows I think that my parents played it safe. I avoided Rupert (my uncle) and Thomas (almost every other male member of my immediate family).
