Democrat mayor of Charlotte, NC arrested for corruption, bribery

Patrick Cannon, the recently elected mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, who was a rising star in the Democrat Party, suddenly resigned from office today as he was arrested in a sting operation by the FBI.

Patrick Cannon was elected in November 2013, and Charlotte is one of the biggest cities of the US South. Charlotte is where the Democrat National Convention for President Obama was held. A big reason why Patrick Cannon became mayor is because the previous mayor of Charlotte, Anthony Foxx, also a Democrat, was nominated by Obama to lead the transportation department.

Patrick Cannon was recorded on tape accepting bribes from fake businessmen (really FBI agents) for over $68,000 in exchange for preferential treatment and pushing laws the businessmen wanted. Cannon agreed to change zoning laws so that one of the business men could open a new strip club in Charlotte. Cannon also told the undercover FBI agents that he could do more favors for them, but only if they paid him more $$$.

It's a stunning fall from grace for Cannon, who was elected at 26 as Charlotte's youngest city councilman in history. He faces a max. sentence of 50 yrs in prison and $1.5 million in fines.
