Besides, how would a burglar know you have no cash or other valuables until the break in?

i hear of break ins in my extended circle of friends all the time. mostly, its laptops that get taken.

i only had a break-in once. luckily, i had my laptop with me. my three roommates, however, got theirs stolen. the weirdest part was that the burglar(s) left something: a big plastic bag filled with childrens clothing. what. the. fuck.

I thought home burglary has gone out of fashion. Apparently not. I mean, nowadays you can't really get much out of a house. It's not like we have tons of cash in the house. The tv's are too big for them to carry out. There's really not much of value they could take in a regular house nowadays.

Anyway, thank goodness I keep a couple of backup copy disks elsewhere.

The thing I'd fear losing the most in a break-in are my two old guitars and amps, which are irreplaceable for sentimental reasons.

One guitar was a loan from a friend of my mom's which she later gave to me, the other was acquired the magical rock'n'roll way from a pawn shop. Likewise the amps, both bought used.

That worry was matched by the fear of burglars harming my elderly cat during the break in, but since her passing I can focus all panic on my musical babies without feeling guilty.

My sis had her flat broken into a few years ago. They drilled a hole into her inch and a half thick heavy wooden door, then used an electric jigsaw to saw around the lock. And there was no break in downstairs in the communal front door. And no one in the other flats were 'in' or heard anything....

We were broken into last week. The bastards gained entry by forcing a locked window open. Luckily, our house wasn't trashed, but they did take off with a fair bit of jewellery worth about $5,000, some loose change that was in an ash tray on the kitchen bench, a netbook computer, about $200 worth of beer & wine that was in the fridge and, of all things, my old lawnmower that was in the shed! Oddly enough, nothing in the study was touched; that included my camera gear, all my cd's, an ipad and another laptop computer.

We're luckier than some, I guess, but it doesn't lessen the shock you experience when you make the discovery that your house has been broken into and then that awful sense of violation you feel, knowing that complete strangers have been in your house and going through your things. Cunts!!!

Not necessarily. Where I live, people steal all kinds of scrap metal to sell to the recycling centers. Steel, aluminum, and copper are going for pretty high prices.

There was a saying, "They took everything that wasn't nailed down" ... but these days, they're stealing the nailed down stuff too, Including play grounds, rail roads, guide cables, bridge parts...

Haha, this reminds me of my bikes in Chicago. I worked in University of Chicago genetics labs for a while. Had a bike to ride back and forth between my apartment and the labs. Well, one day I came out of work and the bike was gone. They cut through my chains to get the bike. So, I went out to a garage sale and got another bike that was really old looking. This thing was a piece of shit with rust all over it. Didn't think anyone would want it. Well, a couple weeks later some bastard cut the chains and took that as well.

A word of advice for bikers. Get those u-locks.

My classmate had her 3 years old bike stolen 2 weeks ago. Considering that she parked in the same place for years and it's actually near college it's kinda silly that it happened
