It's even being reported on the news over here - raging wildfires sweeping across Tasmania and N.S.W. and temps as high as 45°C (113°F)

According to the climate map parts of the interior can reach over 50°C (122°F)

You'd have to carry me away in a stretcher if I ever had to deal with those temps.

I can't even handle 25°C (77°F)

The temperatures are so high, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology has extended its weather forecast chart from 50.7 to 54 degrees, adding the new colours of deep purple and pink to illustrate the top end of the scale. More high temperatures are expected later in the week

^Nah isothermal areas that low are usually white except in Canada of course - just medium blue...white for -40 and below...ahahha

Based on the colour key, the uber high and ultra low temps are in almost the same shades - that's what happens when you ring the entire colour wheel.

Not many people lives in the middle of Australia, it is a desert anyway. Bush fire happens because the soil in Australia are easy to catch fire, I forgot the chemical composition, probably they have a lot of sulphur? And I live near to the beach, so the temperature is still tolerable. I am not sure about others thou.

^Bushfires happen here because a lot of our forests are so dry. The soil doesnt catch fire lol.

No, I did a research awhile ago when I was doing a report on banksia. Yes, the soil doesn't catch fire but when dry leaves is in the ground with the maybe sulphur soil, it causes the fire.

In 1983, when I was five, I was in an English school with expat children and one of them was an Australian boy and there was a bushfire and their house in Australia had almost burned down. The house was saved, but the vegetation had all burnt to the ground. My mother asked if that wasn't bad, but they said it would all grow back.

Are there any plant seeds in Oz that are only triggered by bushfires? I think so.

I believe there's a total fire ban in Victoria for tomorrow (Friday).

The temperature is set to reach upwards of 42°C, and the central / western areas of the state are said to be particularly dry. I read that there are more than 10 fires currently blazing in Victoria, but I've been hearing quite a bit about one in Goroke and another in Kentbruck. I'm assuming that these two will be the primary focus tomorrow.

I've been sick lately though, and I'm ashamed to admit I haven't been keeping up with the news of fires in other states. If anybody more informed than I am would be willing to update me on everything (or provide me with a link to a comprehensive news story), I would be greatly appreciative.

Nationwide total fire ban again today. It's supposed to top at 35 - positively winter in comparison to the rest of the week - but in my area it's already at 36

In Oodnadatta, a small town near the centre, the temperature climbed above 45C for seven consecutive days. That's punishingly hot. Read about it here.

In Melbourne, we've so far had a few hot days, but nothing like that.

The temp in Sydney reached nearly 43 C on Tuesday, but it cooled off by midnight and the temp stayed in low to mid 20s until today (Sat) when it reached 31 C around midday. Tonight is a very comfortable 22 C so it's really not that bad compared to the other parts of the state/country.

When the temp goes over 30 C and I'm not in the office - given that I don't have air conditioner in my apartment I have two options, either (a) take my laptop with me to my local council library which is just a 2-min walk from my apartment, or (b) head off to one of the Sydney beaches, my favourite is Manly which is just a 30-min ferry ride from the CBD.

Bush fires mainly effect the people live outside the suburbs where there are lots of trees and dry vegetation.

However i remember the Canberra bush fire. The fire with extreme high wind blew across the suburbs where lots of houses were destroyed.

No thanks - I can still enjoy (Sydney) outdoors in the 30s and 40s by going to the beach and having a cold beer or an ice cream, but there's virtually nothing to do when it's -25 C unless you like ice fishing

I saw someone in shorts today (Ok it was more like -18c then) and no there are a lot of things to do in winter. Millions in Canada enjoy winter sports in chilly weather .... but at 40c I would die...that's insane heat IMO.

Actually I would - just so long as I had a full set of quality winter clothing for going out, and that the house was heated well.

I looked up where Waterton Park is - it's the high altitude that causes it to be so cold presumably? I'm imagining a picturesque log-cabin nestled in pine trees high amongst the mountains, with roaming moose and fox and wolves. Sounds really inviting.

All the temps are shade readings.
If you put a thermometer on the dash of a car in this heat it will go close to 70 C.
The fire danger has been exacerbated by a couple of years of good rain (we have just got over 10yrs of drought), the natural eucalypts have a lot of oil in them and the fire going through them, aided by strong , hot winds, makes them expolsive.
The best advice, get the fuck out of there !
PS don't know where he got the sulphur talk from and no, it has nothing to do with it.

Another reason to live in NZ ...I hear it has the best climate...never gets that heat and winters are fairly mild especially north island.
