How Far OFF-Topic Can An ON-Topic Discussion Be?

There seems some question of how from the narrow confines of the OP a discussion can go. For example, see http://www.justusboys.com/forum/thre...=1#post8555880.

To put in other terms, if I pose an ON-TOPIC about red maples, can someone mention non-red maples or that they don't like maples at all and prefer birches?

I've always confused Acer saccharum and Acer saccharinum, although it is not really hard to distinguish them.

As for paper maple, I don't think that grew where I attended school and took botany.

The chocolate pudding pie thing COULD be related, as just about all chocolate pudding has lots of red food dye.

Try Acer griseum.

Chocolate pudding pie and razors are far off-topic and therefore pertinent to the OP.
