The broadcaster Stuart Hall has been arrested and questioned over allegations of rape and indecent assault, the BBC understands.

The investigation, led by Lancashire Police, relates to historical allegations but the force will provide no further details.

How about Janet Street Porter and Esther Rantzen being arrested and questioned for their roles as accomplices or 'enablers'.

There's some documented evidence of touching plus lots of undocumented allegations of touching and two undocumented allegations of penetration.

There's a lot of melodrama, prurience and hand-wringing —and the BBC probably needs a good shake-up— but there's not much credible evidence.

I really don't want to defend Savile because I think his kind of British humour (shared with Benny Hill/the Carry On films/Graham Norton) which relies on 'naughtiness' and 'outrageousness' is just really stupid.

Broadcaster Stuart Hall has been charged with three counts of indecent assault.

The 82-year-old from Wilmslow in Cheshire has been charged following complaints to police about alleged incidents involving three girls aged between nine and 16.

Lancashire Police said the offences were alleged to have been committed between 1974 and 1984.

I don't think you could call Saville a comedian and I certainly don't think you can equate him with Benny Hill or Graham Norton

^ No, I wouldn't call him a comedian either but all three of them rely on the British habit of giggling, tittering and blushing in embarrassment over anything to do with the body, nudity or sex.

I think all three of them are dreadfully unfunny.



BTW: I'm not an apologist for pedophiles but I noticed that the news article confirms to the old journalist rules of mixing the perpetrator's current age with the victims' previous age in order to make it more sensational.

And the latest news is that Max Clifford has been arrested
Leading public relations expert Max Clifford has been arrested on suspicion of sexual offences.

Although, to be fair, he doesn't appear to have any direct connection with the Saville case. Maybe they are saying he has failed to pass on information to the Police. He is well known as the person to go to when you are in trouble

Yes, I was dithering about the appropriate description. All the tributes in the other thread and the knighthood were for the charity stuff rather than being a pop TV presenter. But I'm not going to join a witch-hunt of hatred against this dead man until I hear some prosecutable evidence.

PS: I realise people on a witch-hunt want to exercise their hate quickly but I feel sorry for the Scotland Yard detectives who have to sift through any available evidence to get a prosecution that would stand up in court.

It'd be difficult for them because that kind of 'naughty' British humour from those days was all about innuendo and double-entendre and most of the alleged victims were not very bright teenage girls.

It's the role of the Crime Prosecution Service to decide if there is enough evidence to make a successful prosecution. The police gather the evidence and then pass it on to the CPS.

The Metropolitan Police at Scotland Yard (or more correctly 'New Scotland Yard' now) investigates cases in London, there are other regional police forces which investigates crime in their locales.

This case is moving very slowly.

I wonder if the authorities (whoever they are) are deliberately taking it slow to dissipate the anger. All the chavs and spivs will be full of Christmas pudd and forget their anger next year when a new scandal will be sure to arise.

Just because the alleged victims may not be very bright, to quote you, doesn't mean they could be taken advantage of.

But 'Naughty' British humour is the reason it was acceptable for ghastly people like Sid James, Benny Hill and Savile to chase 'Dolly Birds' who were as young as their daughters and think it's 'Just a Larf'.

And so often, 'naughtiness' is just nastiness.

Scotland Yard says 450 people have contacted them with 31 allegations of "rape" but the most of them were way back in the 1970s before all (or most of us) were born.
