Right that's what we pointed out a few times when the last 2-3 pages have been people saying stuff like "duh, it's reasonable for someone to not give their real name.."

The difference is, a big poster here has verified that was supposed to be their 'real name' and identity.

We actually have one Jubber still active who did that and then was apparently resurrected after a period in purgatory.

Obviously I have a very low opinion of anyone who might toy with some of their emotionally fragile fellows...but as long as they didn't try to raise money from the gullible...then it is a relatively modest betrayal.

It would be the difference between your parents faking their own death when you were 7 in order to not have to take care of you any more and some guy telling his room mate to tell the one night stand who wanted to get in touch again that he had moved far, far away.

I'm going to say that the nature of such a betrayal would fall somewhere between your two examples. No, it's not as extreme as abandoning a helpless child; but certainly, provoking grief is more serious than telling a white lie to a one night stand. I take it for granted that there were people here who felt they were friends enough with Andreus that they grieved for him; many of the sentiments in the Garden of Memories thread would seem to bear that out. Maybe I'm just not as cynical and suspicious as I ought to be?

Even I, who had only been here about a year and 1000 posts when he left and had very little direct interaction with him, considered him kinda larger than life. This, I think, is why this thread has reached 17 pages. I suspect were we to raise this about any number of other JUB big guns - no names need mentioning, but I'm sure if we drew up lists there'd be many names popping up on them more than once - who've made a big contribution here over the years, they'd get to double figures easily, hot or not.

Make no mistake, Andreus could pull a crowd. Frankly I think we all deserve a bit more credit than "it's because he was hot and packing."

Andreus had an occasional (and rather annoying) habit of posting pictures of "himself" for only a few minutes. He would post a link to a picture, and the picture would be removed after a few minutes.

On one occasion, I recognized the picture he posted as that of a little-known amateur male model, who had once done a small series of outdoor nudes.

It didn't strike me at the time as evidence that he was a fake. Lots of people who are not comfortable with their own appearance post pics of other people which they claim to be their own. It does not mean that they are not real people, with real lives and important things to say about the world.

But, it does fit with the impression that much (or even all) of his persona was not what he claimed it to be.

Oh sorry. I don't know extra things that would shed any more light on the situation. I can't even remember half of what I was typing in now. Jubbers who know me from years ago might remember that if there is a topic I get into, I had a habit of making maybe 6 or 7 posts in a row without really saying much at all. Thats why it would have gone to 40 pages.

Really, most of my points would be based around the fact that I'd prefer to read the mundane story of one real jubber, than the exciting and interesting story of a fake one (unless its in the story forum, which I like). I am really, really passionate about that. I came to the Jub forums at a time when I needed to connect and Jub became very important in my life, helping me through a rocky patch. When Andreus confessed to being HIV+ on here, I thought that was really amazing. That is why I said in that thread :

So I spent an hour of my life reading something that I could have done something else more constructive and worthy of my time. There still might be an Andreus, but I very much doubt his story. Unless there is something else that comes to light that swings things around. So, it's been an unpleasant, in many ways, thread, yet fascinating. But at the same time, if someone can see the possible consequences of their actions before embarking on a similar pathway, perhaps some good will come out of it.

Oh gosh, good old Peto, Croynan's favorite nemesis. Any time Peto posted, I knew Croynan would soon be on his tail .... I really miss Croynan. What a major part of JUB he was and one of the best parts of JUB.

The Croynan vs Peto feud was a truly wondrous thing to behold.

Peto's love of opera made him almost bearable at times.

I too miss Croynan, he was always interesting.

There was another J U B member (an Aussie, I think) who enjoyed taking the piss out of Peto, too, but his name escapes me for the moment. I actually had quite a number of private exchanges with Peto and found him to be a thoroughly charming and interesting guy. And yes, his knowledge of opera was amazing! Whether he actually was who he claimed to be, I don't really know, but I certainly enjoyed the PM's we exchanged. I know that many Jubbers believed he was a complete fake, though.

As for Croynan ... he was a dear friend and I, too, miss him greatly on the boards! I did receive an email from him not too long ago .... He was dealing with a few issues in his life but is doing well and keeping busy.

Though he is outside the topic of this thread (because I don't think his persona was a sock-puppet of a concurrent JUBber under a different account name), I was waiting for his name to come up. I don't believe that his JUB persona accurately reflected his own real-life persona, but some of his attributes were hard to fake (such as his knowledge of opera) and were probably true to himself. As with ozguy, I also exchanged some PM's with him and enjoyed what we exchanged, even though I felt he was some-degree-of-fake even at the time.

It occurred to me, at the time, that "I REALLY HOPE THIS STORY IS A FAKE LIE." The alternative, if it's the truth, would mean that a Professor is out there in danger of having his career destroyed, or worse, over something entirely not his fault at all (aside from the bad decision to give answers before the exam). The story struck me as portraying the type of guy who could hold such a grudge that he could suddenly show up in class with a gun and start shooting people.
