"On such an inimical world life can evolve in one of two ways. There are the defeated, littered on countless planets across the cosmos; weak, anaemic creatures huddled in their dead-end sanctuaries, a little protective niche in the local ecology, never rising above a rudimentary level, their very lack of sophistication providing them with the means of continuation. Or there are the triumphant, the creatures which refuse to be beaten, which fight tooth and nail and claw against their adversity; those for which circumstances act as an evolutionary spur."
Not a quote, but a small excerpt from The Reality Dysfunction by Peter F. Hamilton. I've read the entire trilogy twice now, and plan to read it again in the future; it's just so incredibly well written.

"I am sick of your foul language, your crude behavior and your sluttish manner. There are certain things a decent woman keeps private, and only a filthy slut would have done this and those who stood by and encouraged her are just as bad. I don't care who's responsible - you're all to blame. Now, I am going to leave this room for five minutes by which time that disgusting object had better be removed and the windows opened to clear away the stench. If you must play these filthy games, do them in your homes, and not in my classroom!"
Mark Thackeray, To Sir, With Love.
God answers all prayers. Most of the time, though, the answer is 'No'.
My favorite novel is Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, but my favorite quote is from another of his novels - Taiko. It's spoken by a minor character named Kanbei. He is sent by one lord to anther to request a favor, but to his surprise, he's taken prisoner and thrown into a castle dungeon. While sitting in the cold dank dungeon, he says this line, out loud, to nobody.
"It's interesting, isn't it? Being in the world."

Another good one from a novel I read recently:
“Who has never killed an hour? Not casually or without thought, but carefully: a premeditated murder of minutes. The violence comes from a combination of giving up, not caring, and a resignation that getting past it is all you can hope to accomplish. So you kill the hour. You do not work, you do not read, you do not daydream. If you sleep it is not because you need to sleep. And when at last it is over, there is no evidence: no weapon, no blood, and no body. The only clue might be the shadows beneath your eyes or a terribly thin line near the corner of your mouth indicating something has been suffered, that in the privacy of your life you have lost something and the loss is too empty to share.”
― Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves

"I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice, not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother's death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany." The opening line of A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.
I also love the last line of this book, "O God, please give him back. I shall keep asking you." I am not a Christian and I don't believe in God, but just thinking about this live sometimes moves me to tears. As does this line from The Lord of the Rings "I will take the ring, though I do not know the way."

"How can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also God? There is no one, no entity or higher form that she can appeal to, or be reconciled with, or that can forgive her. There is nothing outside her. In her imagination she has set the limits and the terms. No atonement for God, or novelists, even if they are atheists. It was always an impossible task, and that was precisely the point. The attempt was all." - Atonement
