What exactly do these letters spell? How many of them are there? Is it like a grade? Can you get an A?

^The "letter" is the school's emblem [usually the first letter of the town or private school's name] embroidered onto a "varsity" jacket. Yes, it is a particular type of jacket that you can buy which are normally in the school's colors. Many times, they will embroider the last name on to it too.
