What to say to guys on Grindr?

I just tried using Grindr for the first time about a month ago. Haven't spent much time there but I keep getting messages from guys, some of them I'm interested in. I haven't got anything besides "hey" or "hi". What am I supposed to reply back to that? "Hey...wanna fuck?" Seems a bit forward...but...it is Grindr...

I don't quite understand why this such an issue with guys. I feel like greeting someone with "hi" is a fairly well-established social convention. They say "hi", I say "hello, how are you?"/"good morning, handsome, I liked your profile", conversation ensues.

Having said that, I never start with just "hi". I'm more likely to comment on their pic or something they've written.

The reason all these apps suck is because of the small talk. No one downloads an app, picks out a nice photo and sets up a profile to get stuck in a perpetual limbo of "Hey sup?"/"Hi there"/""How ya doin'?"/"How was your day?"

Like get to the motherfucking point already! Jeez! If I wanted unnecessary small talk that goes nowhere, I'd move to a small town and strike conversation with mall employees.

I had this theory that it might have a social non-hook-up uses that would perhaps permit my guy and i to socialise overseas. Hah!

I'm from a small town so all the local gays/closets are on every gay app. I downloaded Growlr and all i get is messages from guys from foreign countries its so nice they are not picky about looks like American guys are. The guys on Growlr crack me up one guy had a list on how he wanted his "Dream Man" to look like "blue eyes, No bears, Blonde hair, Waist size etc.

I wish i would get attention on Grindr i get no messages on there

I reply with hi and wait for them to initate the convo. When I do message people I tailor it to their info and or pic. So like if the guy has very white teeth I will be like... "Hey. You have really nice teeth. What toothpaste do you use?"
