I presume everyone knows that Colorado and Washington approved the recreational use of marijuana this election. Now, since prohibition of anything people want results in increased crime, there's an expectation that crime rates will drop noticeably in the two states.

I suspect that this result will make more states look at doing the same thing. A reduction in crime saves money for people and government both, and at present those are big attractors.

I'll venture that one of the first effects will be a drop in the street price of pot. If it's okay to possess, then people can grow their own in small amounts, thus increasing the supply.

Commerce may come later but for now with just a state and each isolated and surrounded by states that do not allow legal marijuana this wont be an issue it will just be called illegal drug smuggling. I think there is a great deal of pressure on each state to try and keep the legal in their borders which will be damn near impossible. I do expect to see a bunch of novice 'dealers' trying to set up sell businesses outside of the legal states and get nabbed rather quickly.

These were not "laws passed by people taking power away from government." This was "people directing the power of government differently." People are the government in a democracy.

It remains to be seen whether this is a good idea. There is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction that the opposite of prohibition is moderate, sensible use.

For example Russia has no prohibition on alcohol, and no responsible alcohol use. It's a bit of a drunken basket-case.

What will the cartels do -- send in ten thousand hit squads? The economics of the situation negates that as an option, besides the logistical impossibility. Not even the US government could shut down alcohol during Prohibition, so there's no way at all that the cartels would be able to make even a dent.
