It's so interesting to me how Kylie has such a storied career and is basically a living legend like Madonna et al but she's barely a blip on the radar in America. And then the interviewer sealed it at the end with "What's the next incarnation?" Her lack of relevance in the US is so unfair because she really has evolved a lot, done a lot of good music and is probably the sweetest pop star on the planet.

Also I was just listening to this after the reporter said that Michael's darkness rubbed off on her or whatever.

Kylie's been around for 25+ years and she never has been massively successful in the US though - she was regarded as a one-hit wonder until "Can't Get You Out of My Head" managed to infiltrate America, and then after that she went right back to being viewed as irrelevant. In her case it's not situation where she used to be massively popular here and isn't anymore in favor of newer, younger artists - she just never WAS.

You know, not to sound patronising but I can't tell you the amount of times when I lived in the UK and an American would hear, say the "Bristol Sound" or a generally British/Euro dance sound, and would say "we never hear music like this in the US". I think America is just so US-centric when it comes to the music styles they prefer. I just wonder why?

Love At First Sight, Come Into My World and In Your Eyes were always on the radio as I remember it when a Fever came out. Fever was a great success here, anyway the bottom line is she doesn't get any promo here. We can only enjoy what we are exposed to.

That's kind of how it happened, though.

Can't Get You Out of My Head did become a hit here, and it came out of nowhere because Kylie hadn't released music here since 1988 or so after Enjoy Yourself flopped. But as soon as CGYOOMH ran its course, that was it. Love at First Sight got a bit of play but I wouldn't call it a bonafide hit, and Come into My World and Slow barely even made the charts at all (both peaked at #91). It was all very light switch - one second it's like "Yay! We like this one Kylie song!!" and then the U.S. was like "okay bye" again.

That being said the modern adult contemporary station in my area plays a couple of her songs sometimes. They really like playing the version of Taio Cruz's "Higher" that has her on it, and the first time I heard them play "All the Lovers" I was floored but it was amazing.

^ It's just odd is all. The US market is obviously THE market that any artist wants to break because the commercial viability is most prevalent there. You know the old saying "make it there and you can make it anywhere". Apparently not.

Thanks to the early days of Napster and all the uploaded music advances that came after it a revolution started. The consumer took control of what the RCAA and others "gave" to us. Now we have the power to choose. It' so irrelevant what we are subjected to by the way of "charts" etc today. Thanks to the internet we have the freedom to explore and pick and chose what our individual sound is and what (if ever) we'll support and buy. By the internet's very nature and to counter your argument we are "exposed" to everything. Marketing by a certain label is a bygone era. WE now dictate to THEM what works and what doesn't.

I can't figure out why she doesn't have success here either, all I can think is she has no exposure. I have always shared her with people though, and they do think she's cool when they see her. Yeah, I took a World Music class and the teacher was a cool hippie guy so for the final we had to give a presentation and write a 10 page essay on a topic relating to music from around the world and our own personal interests in relations with what we learned in class. So I talked about Kylie's career and evolution as an artist and her influence in music. I edited videos together to show her different styles throughout the years from the 80s until now. I got an A in that class, it was fun.

One thing... I've never thought about that. What I wish I could do is have a conversation with her, ask her about stuff, maybe get some advice and wisdom. Also I wish I could get a picture with her.
