I'm still not over some of the hypfuckocrisy that was wafting through the air around the "Bender incident". I just found it incredible that so many were all 'no big deal' about it. Unbelievable.

Perhaps people here have really grown bored with the fakes and phonies and can't be bothered with such drama anymore, but as I've said before--we'll see how things go the next time such an incident happens. I'm counting on those torches to be kept under lock and key next time around.

Also--I LOVE talking about it because it apparently bothers some people SO MUCH.

I don't know if it's related to me having been quite sick recently, but I'm really struggling with one of my classes at the moment, and it's incredibly frustrating. I'm certainly not the most intelligent person out there, but I've never really had that much difficulty retaining information when a subject interests me. I just can't seem to concentrate at the moment though, and going over the subject matter repeatedly just leaves me feeling discouraged and exhausted. I need a break.

The bookstore Borg speaks of might have a lot more of those old books, because they sell both new & used books. I sure hope it doesn't go out of business.

On an unrelated note, something interesting happened to me yesterday.

Have you ever seen any of those movies where a man from a past era, accidentally enters a time warp, and ends up in the future? He, not accustomed to the new ways, gets bewildered.

That happened to me.

At UNR (our state university),the old library had outgrown itself, so they moved to a much larger monstrosity of a building called The Knowledge Center. I went in yesterday to do some research, and got utterly bewildered by the new technology.

Nowadays, for many books, you have to ask a counterperson for the book. He enters a code, and a machine goes to the stacks (which stand 20 or 30 stories high), retrieves the book for the counterperson, who gives this book to you.

They completely removed the card catalog. (The old library had the card catalog for pre-1976 tomes). Nowadays, you have to log into a computer to search for any book, which requires a username and password.

It all seemed so Robocop-ish, so Terminator-ish, that I felt a sense of awe.

Speaking truthfully, though, I can't say I like the new system, because the casual reader cannot browse the shelves. I always thought browsing the shelves fun, because often, one accidentally runs into a book that catches his interest.

^ I wanted a recipe that I'd found in a Better Homes & Garden in the early 1940s. Or perhaps it came in a Life magazine from the era.

I looked online for it, Borg. Surprisingly, I found very few recipes for it all over the Internet, and the ones I did find didn't resemble it very much.

There's just something so enriching and exciting to browse through books with your own fingers than having to go through that "system". While I only vaguely remember the card catalog days, at the very least we can go find and handle the books ourselves after using the computer to do the original search. The MARS system does seem to take the fun out of it. Never seen or heard of it until now.

I went there again today.

It took the robot 10 or 15 minutes to fetch four volumes for me. At Getchell, I could have gotten it myself in one minute flat.

man, i was thinking about the catholic school (obviously it was private) that i spent from 1st grade to 8th grade years in and i don't even think the public schools in my town were as poor as my school was. that makes no sense. it still mindfucks me how my teachers would put down grove street school, berekley terrance, chancellor ave. myrtle ave, and all the public schools around the way for not being able to teach the students shit BUT yet our school didn't have SHIT. the books were old. we didn't have the proper tools for learning. no after school programs, no basketball team, no sport teams, no art programs, no NOTHING. they only had girl scouts for the girls BUT other than that, we got robbed of an education. they thought that teaching us religion and brainwashing us to be jesus fanatics was giving us an education. i will NEVER forget when i started high school and how lost i was. as much as the other students put down the school system over here at the time, they were educated pretty damn good compared to me. i felt like an idiot.

another thing that irks me too. they should have SKIPPED me a grade. i should have been in my brother's grade. i was doing REALLY well in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades BUT i guess they didn't think that i was bright enough. i know i did REALLY well on the standardize testing in the 1st grade where it was like 90 or 80 percent. the evaluation said that i was REALLY bright BUT somehow they didn't fucking skip me a grade. DAMNIT, i was robbed. i should have been in the same grade as my brother but i guess they didn't want me to embarrass my brother since he wasn't doing too good as a student.

they didn't do that. it wasn't a choice. it was either you do the religion class, go to mass, and do as we tell you what we want you to do or we'll kick you out and you can go to one of irvington's many public schools where you'll be miseducated or worse. they were basically manipulating the kids and the parents at the same time. they would basically steal the money from the parents, brainwash the kids into jesus or whatever then give them whatever education that they wanted. it was really about the money.

i didn't mention it to her during the intake session. if they hook me up with individual therapy, that will most definitely be discussed. it's crazy seeing how money drives an institution. they really fucked us over. i remember when my father didn't pay up the tuition and they refused to give me my report card. it was embarrassing. everybody knew it too because the teacher would call the students to give them their report cards and obviously, if you didn't get yours, your parents didn't pay up. like why should i be penalized for what my father failed to do? my father was NEVER a responsible figure anyway and even to this day, he pushes his responsibilities onto other people where my mom has to pay money for his medication and i have to pick it up. don't know how my mom has been able to stay with him for so long. i would have left his ass years ago if i was her even if i had to move to the projects.

they REALLY do a whole lot of damage. if i ever have children, i will NEVER subject them to any religious or private school for that matter.

Oh no... I meant *I* had to get them to let me drop it my last two years because of all the other classes I was taking. At the h.s. level they're more flexible about it if you have a specific reason, or at least mine was. But with a required yearly religion class it's even hard to fit in all the CA state h.s. requirements let alone if you're taking anything extra for college.

I have friends that splurge on so much crap like paying someone to do their laundry every week and clean up their apartments once a month. Many of them in fact cannot afford to pay for those services. It's embarrassing how inept my generation is. It's also why I'm the only one of my friends with an 800+ credit rating.
