A major new study reports that when contraception is widely offered and used, abortions drastically decreases. This has always been a disturbing contradiction of social conservatives in their opposition to birth control when they are so opposed to mistaken pregnancies that force women into abortions. Here, at last, the definitive proof that when you are pro-contraception, you are Pro-Life.

The effect on teen pregnancy was striking: There were 6.3 births per 1,000 teenagers in the study. Compare that to a national rate of 34 births per 1,000 teens in 2010.There also were substantially lower rates of abortion, when compared with women in the metro area and nationally: 4.4 to 7.5 abortions per 1,000 women in the study, compared with 13.4 to 17 abortions per 1,000 women overall in the St. Louis region, Peipert calculated. That's lower than the national rate, too, which is almost 20 abortions per 1,000 women.

This is a very good thing.

I'm a pro lifer who certainly believes contraception/using condoms is far more preferable than throwing away a potential human life by abortion.It pains me deeply so many millions were denied a chance for life once conceived....unfortunately many pro life zealots will use any study on the potential health dangers of some forms of contraception as a reason to battle its availability to the most vulnerable. Or simply for whatever theological reason decry contraception as an unnatural intrusion or that it goes against what they consider the procreative aspect of sex.

Most conservatives have no problem with contraception, while opposing abortion. The Catholic church early had a knee jerk reaction to conreaception and is afraid to back down-- it might seem fallible.

Too bad the far right talibangelicals and the ridiculous Catholics don't want birth control taught in schools or condoms to be made easily available to their kids.

The belief that abstinence is the only message to teach kids is naive and just plain unworkable. It has been for about 5000 years at least.

Birth control is about family planning. Abortion is about ending a life.
You have extremes on both sides. On one side you have those who believe that masturbation is the destruction of life and on the other end you have those who support aborting a baby until within minutes of normal birth.

Family planning is the way to go, abortion is not. That is just my opinion, of course.

And yeah, wow, denial of human nature doesn't work, and preventing unwanted pregnancies prevents wanted abortions. In other news, water is wet! News at 11!

Actually, I had several long discussions with an elderly grandmother who was a strong proponent of abortion rights for women. It was her belief that as long as the baby was still inside the mother, she should have the right to do as she pleased with the unborn child. She used the expression of "motherhood being inflicted on women". She had 5 children of her own. I asked if she felt that her children were "inflicted" on her. She said she never wanted 5 but she also said no one pressured her into having that many, either. Interestingly, in talking to her adult children, they said they felt "controlled" by her but never "mothered". The old woman said her views on abortion rights were common among her liberal friends.

It's been cool to read your responses so far you guys. Despite our political differences, we seem to agree that encouraging the access and use of contraception is a good thing and a great way to reduce the number of abortions.

I doubt anyone would have guessed that the numbers would show such a difference as they did -- that's an impressive result.

As for the Roman church, they're actually flying in the face of scripture: the Bible says God commanded humans to "fill the earth", but also that He commanded all the creatures to "be fruitful, and multiply", not just us. So "fill" can be defined on the basis of the text as the point at which there are so many of us we start inhibiting the ability of other creatures to be fruitful and multiply.

We reached that back around 1960.
