If you’ve read this Local Radar feature since it began, you’ve probably noticed my affinity for Food Pyramid, consistently one of the more under-appreciated bands by local music critics. And I get it: their brand of repetitive, fuzzed out, electro-space rock whatever-you-want-to-call-it is not everyone’s forte. And when most of your songs clock in anywhere between five to 20 minutes — and don’t forget a traditionally unpredictable live show which usually doesn’t include any recognizable material — it becomes difficult to gain any traction in the community.

Of course that has never been Food Pyramid’s goal throughout the several releases they have put out on now-Oakland based Moon Glyph Records. That relocation unfortunately happened around the time their first proper album Mango Sunrise was unleashed. And it’s really too bad, because Mango is their most accessible, rhythmic and impressive work. It got a lot of national love through various online hypemasters, but was kind of discounted here at home. Food Pyramid went rather quiet after that, so I’m glad I was able to catch them at an impromptu Lower Dens show at the Triple Rock last year. Those who were there (which wasn’t many), got to see Food Pyramid play an explosive set leading into the Baltimore headlining band’s teaser of their at-the-time unreleased album Nootropics (sidenote: also one of the better reviewed releases of 2012).

Lower Dens frontwoman Jana Hunter is a vocal fan of Food Pyramid and reportedly tapped the band to open that show. So it comes as no surprise that the new FP album Ecstasy & Refreshment features a lead single with Hunter on vocals. It’s been on the internet for weeks without much attention, but slowly and surely others have taken note, like this week’s write-up by Pitchfork.

You obviously can’t understand anything Hunter is saying—that’s kind of Food Pyramid’s M.O. But her voice literally serves as another instrument, and it washes over itself, creates layers and assists in building the song to danceable, or slightly swaying, groove. “Dexedream” is noticeably similar to the band’s cassette work rather than Mango Sunrise, with an obvious nod to their solid tape III. Take a listen to “E-Harmony” and “Last Shuttle To The Red Planet” and you’ll get the connection.

Lower Dens have announced the follow-up to their 2012 album Nootropics. Escape From Evil is out March 31 in North America and March 30 everywhere else via Ribbon Music.

The album was produced by the band's Jana Hunter. It was co-produced and mixed by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House, Future Islands). The band also collaborated with Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend, Sky Ferreira, Haim), John Congleton (Swans, St. Vincent, Cloud Nothings), and others on the album.

The 5 Best New Songs We Heard This Week: Lower Dens’ Retrofuturism,

Lower Dens — “Sucker’s Shangri-La”

Musical retrofuturism has a new posterchild, and her/his/its name is Jana Hunter. Even the title of Lower Dens’ ace third album, out this week, just sounds like a big-budget sci-fi thriller: Escape From Evil. On it, Hunter turns up the volume on her gender ambiguity and warps her fascination with pop experimentation into a Gary Numan-style homage to ’80s hits. Album opener “Sucker’s Shangri-La” would make the perfect soundtrack for cruising desert highways in a DeLorean.

The only radio station I actually listen to is my alma mater, University of Miami. The station wvum.org has terrific programming. They've been playing several cuts from this album. I like what I've heard so far.

Lower Dens leader Jana Hunter is a frequent Talkhouse contributor and a fine writer — in April of 2015, she wrote a widely read piece for Cosmopolitan titled "What It's Like to Be a Female Musician When You Don't Identify as a Woman." And Perfume Genius, aka Mike Hadreas, has said he's pretty fluid with gender too. But that was only one reason why we invited these two to sit down and chat for the Talkhouse Music Podcast. Lower Dens and Perfume Genius make some of the most interestingly beautiful music around, and Hunter and Hadreas are two intriguing, well spoken people.

Sure, they talked about "gay/gender stuff" but they also just related as musicians — and talked candidly about inspiration, how to conduct yourself on stage, the perils of social media and dealing with hate mail. And they related as people too — they talk about dealing with email, the awesomeness of Rihanna, their methods for quitting smoking and why Clark Kent is hot.

Hadreas and Hunter had met only briefly once before, but they're fans of each other's music, and when they sat down at the Talkhouse Music mikes, they hit it off immediately — in fact, almost from the start these two very thoughtful people were giggling like teenagers. They do have one big difference, though: Hadreas believes in everything, but Hunter doesn't believe in anything.
