Refuji, I'm going to be real with you: you really seem to be preoccupied with attractive guys who behave in a conceited manner. There are conceited people everywhere in the world, a lot of them get inflated egos because people in their lives let them get away with it, they have sycophants and enablers. BUT, don't let these types get in the way of your happiness. Don't cater to them, but also don't spend so much time dwelling on how much you dislike/hate them. I don't always accurately know how old everyone is here.. .but I do think you can make usually very good guesses as to who is older and who is younger, so I think I know what you mean. The frequent fluff posting without much substance or with just a gif gets old.

The difference is any thread about something you don't care to read about, you can simply not read.

When they come into a thread where an actual discussion IS happening and then fill two pages with animated gifs back and forth at each other, that's really irritating to the people having said discussion.

I think it's more about posting styles. Personally, I admit I tend to be one of the dudes who post gifs after gifs but I do it knowing that the OP is fine with it. And that there is nothing much to discuss in the thread. It is wise for the posters to use the "no animated gifs" tag if they don't want an explosion of gifs in their threads.

Actually xbuzz is a nice dude and Cupid and Bender are nice dudes too. Can you all put this incident aside? I am sure once we get to know each other better, you guys will be great friends and all of you will put me on ignore.

Someone complimented my writing today. And that got me thinking about something that happened on Twitter last weekend. I was a judge (among others) for a talent competition. After the Top 3 were announced, one person tweeted "How many times did Brad have to suck off Lex to make the top three?" It wasn't entirely clear if the tweet was meant humorously or with a mean streak. But I retweeted with a response:

"Nowhere near enough."

In retrospect, I'm exceptionally proud of that three-word response. I didn't confront the other guy. I didn't "take a stand". I didn't explain that (obviously) nobody had sucked me off. I didn't succumb to heavy self-deprecation. I kept things humorous, without making anybody a target. What could have been a flashpoint ended up being a oening "straight" line. Everybody laughed about it, several retweeted it, and life went on.

"Look how cool the gargoyle is" post complete.

I know you joke around a lot; I'm not without a sense of humor but you also post a lot of substance, too. Plus the battles between you and Lil Bit are most typically amusing text exchanges.

I simply don't get an entire thought or response being conveyed entirely through just a gif by itself, unless the gif itself has a message in it or something. I was honestly trying to get them to explain to me what's up with that because it's not that I'm an old man sitting here hating it because it's something young poeple do--- it's because I sincerely and honestly don't understand it. Everyone should be reminded that a pic is often (not always) "worth a thousand words" (according to conventional wisdom), and a 20 frame gif is often worth 20,000 words. So many people who limit a post to just a pic probably consider it as being the equivalent of 1,000 words.

I think that some people think better through pictures, and other people think better through words.

The only thing that really bothers me about the GIFs is that too many of them will crash a browser. I have my GIFs turned off for this reason.

My definition (rather long-worded ) is....

The continual and repetitive creating of deliberate and intentional posts and threads designed specifically to provoke a complex negative reaction amongst as many who read it as possible.

This 'negative reaction' can be annoyment, irritation, exasperation, anger, etc. but it needn't ALWAYS be negative, it CAN be a neutral or even positive reaction - e.g. confusement or even amusement or enjoyment. Classic examples - ElroyAuto and SloppySeconds. Most people take those two light-heartedly or ambivalently. Trolls can sometimes (albeit rarely) be funny and enjoyable.

Often trolling in cloaked in a 'story' which is often incredulous or laughable or stereotypical, but the more REPETITIVE the stories get around a similar theme, the more OBVIOUS the troll is.

Some people come in here to troll just to cause trouble. I can think of two--no, three trolls right off hand. They seem to know just how far to push.

I have my own personal definitions of it, but I have worked as a moderator of forums in the past, and I find that while everyone can point and call "troll", rarely will you get the same definition out of people if you ask them to define what it is. That's why I asked.

When I say I see discussion forums as for discussion I'm not sure why there's a lot of need to analyze that or instruct me on things I already know like "people are different" or "People have different styles."
