THE SECRET DISCO REVOLUTION
Disco. Whether you love it or hate it, it was an undeniably massive cultural phenomenon, offering heady dance-floor escapism — and some priceless polyester outfits. But beneath the reverberating vocals, frenetic strobe lights and four-on-the-floor beat, there was a neon epiphany waiting to emerge.
In The Secret Disco Revolution, director, satirist and comic provocateur Jamie Kastner offers a humorous and insightful investigation into the much-maligned genre, taking up the claim by academic revisionists that disco was in fact a misunderstood culture of protest and a movement of mass liberation for some of American society’s most marginalized citizens: women, African-Americans, and gay men. Could disco enthusiasts actually have been unwitting foot soldiers in a glittering social revolution?
Through interviews with music industry veterans, DJs, academics, and such disco legends as Gloria Gaynor, The Village People, Anita Pointer and Thelma Houston, Kastner crafts a sophisticated and rather offbeat argument about the subversive nature of the dance-floor sensation, and intersperses dramatic "re-enactments" of the revolutionary masterminds behind the music, plotting their mirrorball mesmerism of an unsuspecting public. Perhaps most striking, however, is the gold mine of incredible archival footage that Kastner has unearthed of obscure disco parties, Soul Train episodes, Studio 54 in its heyday, and momentous performances by disco greats, including the late Donna Summer.
The Secret Disco Revolution provides a comprehensive overview of disco from its early days at The Loft in NYC to its conquest of radio, its international impact, the fierce backlash against it, and its enduring legacy. It also shuttles nimbly between kitsch and critical analysis, offering intriguing glimpses into the disparity that exists between practitioners and theorists, and between lived experience and cultural artifact. The result is a meticulously researched documentary that is both cheekily fun and intellectually absorbing.

For nearly fifty years New Yorkers and travelers from around the world have found at Rizzoli Bookstore a collection of books that always transcends expectations.
Established in New York in 1964 Rizzoli moved in 1985 to its present location -- a six story townhouse exhibiting on its façade a sober classicism that belies the elegant interior within, where cast iron chandeliers, ornately decorated vaulting, and a luminous Diocletian window create a serene setting for booklovers amidst the rush of Midtown Manhattan.
Our collection of books is specialized in illustrated subjects -- fashion, interior design, art, architecture, photography, design -- and literature, in Italian, French, Spanish, and English. But all subjects of general interest are represented and we carry a selection of European magazines and newspapers. We also carry a fine selection of compact discs and DVDs, and our selection of note cards and stationery is a constant delight to our customers.
Rizzoli Bookstore is located at 31 West 57th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues, in New York City.

For this ongoing project, Shells created official-looking street signs quoting famous rap lyrics that shout out specific street corners and locations. He then installed them at those specific street corners and locations.
Shells went all city and posted over 30 signs quoting the likes of Jeru tha Damaja, Mos Def, Nas, Kanye West, CL Smooth, GZA, and RA the Rugged Man. ANIMAL followed. Ride along with our video above. Follow @TheRapQuotes for more.

Filmed in 2012, this "Exclusive" follows artist Barry McGee through his self-titled retrospective exhibition at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA). McGee, who became interested in tagging while growing up in San Francisco, describes the excitement of putting up new tags and the rush of getting away with it. Alongside his ongoing and intimate involvement with street culture, McGee has maintained an active studio practice, which he describes as being something "completely different." These two disparate ways of making—and showing—work meet in "Barry McGee," which was also shown at the ICA Boston.
A cult figure amongst skaters and graffiti artists, Barry McGee's drawings, paintings, and mixed-media installations take their inspiration from contemporary urban culture, incorporating elements such as empty liquor bottles and spray-paint cans, tagged signs, wrenches, and scrap wood or metal. McGee is also a graffiti artist, known by the tag "Twist."
