Judging from what he's said about his upbringing, I think that if he was gay he wouldn't be ashamed of it or try to hide it. The mannerisms and stuff are inevitable if you hang out with enough gay people, I think.

The "fangurl hype" probably has to do with the fact that 1) he was "famous" for AVPM and AVPS long before he was on Glee and people loved him (and the other StarKids), so he already had a huge fanbase and people are excited to see him getting more recognition, 2) the fans feel like they know him better than other celebrities, just because of the past with the StarKid Potter-stuff, which has always been laidback and informal with lots of fan contact, 3) he can sing and act, 4) he's cute and 5) he's a new character on freakin' Glee (which is already hyped up like crazy), with actual talent and charisma. The fact that he's gaining lots of attention and hype is almost natural – and it will surely die down to regular "celeb hype".

As for him being gay, most things point to no. He dated a girl in college (not sure about now), he seems to have no problems talking about how playing a gay character is important to him because he thinks it's important to see confident, gay teens on TV, but he also says he's straight. Like momoda6 says, there seems to be no reason not to believe him. His mannerisms are more… theatre kid-mannerisms than anything else.

He never (at least not as far as I've heard or seen) changes the pronoun in songs. He's also sung "The Coolest Girl" several times (sung from Hermione's point of view), that doesn't mean he's a girl.

I'm getting oldr but when I was in my prime I was told I was hot looking and could get laid pretty much anytime I wanted. As for the model looks and self-satisfaction thing, you again start in the right direction only to be diverted from after just a couple of words: as I have said and repeated here and there over and over again, it's not about the looks or the talent, it's about the HYPE, and there we can be bitchy, because neither Darren Criss nor Mozart nor whomever you please to mention are God[s]. HYPING is the worst way of degradation and "tearing down", all the more since so many people, apparently you too, not only don't seem to find anything wrong in it, but they often they can't even see it, like you, and therefore they only see the hyped character (Mr. Criss in this case) and the "tearer", Yours Truly.
