Ireland has been casting the parts of pro-gay marriage lawyers Ted Olson and David Boies, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker, and anti-gay marriage attorney Charles Cooper, among others, over this weekend via Craigslist.

It seems the idea came to Ireland after the U.S. Supreme Court decided to block a video feed of their proceedings in the Perry v. Schwarzenegger trial.

Students spoke out against implementing guidelines regulating the screening of “obscene” films on university campuses at an open forum last night, following an SGA resolution opposing the need for such a policy.

Despite last night’s speak-out and the Student Government Association’s pointed legislation, the passage of a porn policy appears inevitable. University officials throughout the system are being asked to draft a policy regarding the screening of obscene movies after last year’s proposed on-campus screening of Pirates II: Stagnetti’s Revenge — the most expensive XXX-rated movie ever made — prompted then-state Sen. Andy Harris (R-Baltimore and Harford) to threaten to withhold state funding unless the university canceled the show.

System officials, who are drawing closer to finalizing a draft policy, said the policy may require the screening of certain movies to include an educational component. If the student group sponsoring the movie can’t or refuses to do so, the responsibility would fall on the university.

However, the phrase ‘educational component’ has yet to be defined, prompting many students to express concerns at last night’s forum.

“Why should there be an educational component?” asked sophomore letters and sciences major Jane Ostdiek, who is also the SGA’s letters and sciences legislator. “This is a university, but this is also our home.”

Josef Parker, a junior American Studies major and LBGT studies minor, said he was worried about censorship affecting his education.

“My minor has a lot of sensitive things that we study and that would be considered pornographic by certain legislators,” Parker said. “I don’t want any of what I study to be censored.”

The nation’s largest greeting card company is rolling out same-sex wedding cards — featuring two tuxedos, overlapping hearts or intertwined flowers, with best wishes inside. “”Two hearts. One promise,”" one says.

Hallmark added the cards after California joined Massachusetts as the only U.S. states with legal gay marriage. A handful of other states have recognized same-sex civil unions.

The language inside the cards is neutral, with no mention of wedding or marriage, making them also suitable for a commitment ceremony. Hallmark says the move is a response to consumer demand, not any political pressure.

“”It’s our goal to be as relevant as possible to as many people as we can,”" Hallmark spokeswoman Sarah Gronberg Kolell said.

Hallmark’s largest competitor, American Greetings Corp., has no plans to enter the market, saying its current offerings are general enough to speak to a lot of different relationships.

Hallmark started offering “”coming out”" cards last year, and the four designs of same-sex marriage cards are being gradually released this summer and will be widely available by next year. No sales figures were available yet.

“”When I have shopped for situations like babies or weddings for gay friends I have good luck in quirky stores,”" said Kathryn Hamm, president of the Web site gayweddings.com.

“”But if you are just in a generic store … the bride and groom symbol or words are in most cards,”" she said. “”It becomes difficult to find some that are neutral but have some style.”"

The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law estimates that more than 85,000 same-sex couples in the United States have entered into a legal relationship since 1997, when Hawaii started offering some legal benefits to same-sex partners.

It estimates nearly 120,000 more couples will marry in California during the next three years — and that means millions of potential dollars for all sorts of wedding-industry businesses.

Hallmark, known more for its Midwest mores than progressive greetings, has added a wider variety lately. It now offers cards for difficulty getting pregnant or going through rehab.

It pulled a controversial card that featured the word “”queer”" in the punch line after it was criticized by some customers and gay magazine The Advocate last year. At any given time, Hallmark has 200 different wedding cards on the market, including some catering to interracial or inter-religious marriages and blended families.

The Greeting Card Association, a trade group, says it does not track how many companies provide same-sex cards but believes the number is expanding.

“”The fact that you have someone like Hallmark going into that niche shows it’s growing and signals a trend,”" said Barbara Miller, a spokeswoman for the association.

Rob Fortier, an independent card maker who runs his company, Paper Words, out of New York, added same-sex wedding cards to his mix after thinking about what he would want to receive.

“”A lot of people think a gay greeting card needs a rainbow on it,”" Fortier said. “”I don’t want that.”"

But for some time, it was difficult to even find the words for what anyone wanted to say, he said.

His first card poked fun at the challenge. On the outside it featured lines that had been scratched out: “”Congratulations on being committed!”", “”Congratulations on being unionized!”" and, finally, “”Congratulations on being domestically partnered!”" The inside wished the couple congratulations on choosing to be together forever.

“”It really comes down to language,”" he said.

John Stark, one of the three founders of Three Way Design in Boston, which makes gay-themed cards for occasions from adoption to weddings, has several new designs sketched out and ready.

But he has hesitated adding more wedding cards to his mix until after the November election, when California voters will decide a constitutional amendment that would again limit marriage to a man and a woman in the state.

“”What is scary is to produce a marriage line and then November comes and it’s recalled, then we have thousands of dollars of inventory waiting,”" he said.

The gay-friendly business can be challenging, companies said.

Hamm said although she has found many vendors willing to work with her company, some have asked to be removed from the Web site because of hate mail or some other backlash.

Hallmark says all of its stores can choose whether they want to add the latest offerings. ”

Lady Bunny

For over 20 years, Lady Bunny has been thrilling her audiences from Chattanooga to Tel Aviv.  With a bawdy and brawny sense of humor, musical styling, big hair and even bigger mouth, Lady Bunny has become one of the most successful Drag Artists of all time.  It all started one Halloween, she recalls. “I think I won 3rd prize at a bar called Alan Gold’s in Chattanooga, Tennessee at age 20.  Then I moved to Atlanta and became roommates with RuPaul and a bunch of other drag queens. From there, we all moved to NYC.”  The inspiration for her drag persona came from a comic book.  “It was a 1960’s comic book character called Bunny, Queen of the In Crowd, who was blonde and wore psychedelic outfits.  ‘Lady’ is just a prefix that many drag queens use, like Lady Chablis from “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” I saw her perform in a gay bar when I was 13!”

Life as an emcee, DJ, singer, songwriter, actress and comedienne can be very demanding.  Lady Bunny is often on the road without a lot of personal time, so, how does she relax?  “Suck cock! And eat! As long as something is in my mouth, I’m happy! Seriously, I do travel a lot and it can be exhausting. So I really love to just catch up with friends and catch up on reading and my favorite TV shows when I’m home. There is a lot to do in NYC!”

Late one night, in the Spring of ‘84, after closing the Pyramid Club, Lady Bunny, along with a group of drunken friends, traipsed over to a local park, and there the inspiration for Wigstock, the world’s largest drag festival, was born.  “When I first moved to NYC, there were awful punk bands which played in Tompkins Square Park every weekend. I’m talking about those bands, which ‘jam’ on hour-long songs, with 30-minute excruciating guitar solos. I thought ‘I can put on a better show than that!’ At the time, I was working at a fascinating club with some very unique drag talent, and one night, after drinking heavily, a bunch of us Pyramid Club employees staggered over to the nearby band shell and started clowning on the stage for a few homeless people who were trying to sleep. We weren’t such a hit with the homeless, but we secured the necessary permits, and the event grew larger each year. Eventually we had to move it to the pier due to the crowd size.”  After a 20 year run, Wigstock is currently on hiatus.  However, Bunny indicates that “you never know when we will rear our gorgeously-coiffed heads again.”  (www.wigstock.nu)

When asked which decade best reflects who Bunny is, she stated, “I was born gay, but in the 60’s and 70’s, I was more of a student and less part of the gay scene. Musically, I love the sounds of the disco era. I also love 90’s house when vocals were popular–I’m a little sick of this tacky circuit sound. But a time I think we could learn from is the 80’s, when groups like ACT UP were in full force. Now there are only a handful of members at ACT UP meetings, and it seems that activism has given way to a really mindless body fascism, which celebrates only youth and beauty. That may not be what porn site owners want to hear, and I love sexy guys as much as the next gay, but as a people, our rights are under attack. And most of us are just taking it like a bunch of sissies. When and why did we stop caring?”

What is her hope for the gay community in the future? “That we start caring again! About ourselves! I got an email from the HRC thanking me for my support in passing that bill which sticks gay bashers with stiffer penalties. I felt so guilty! I wasn’t even aware that the bill was up for a vote! I certainly hadn’t emailed or called my senator to ask them to support it and/or my own welfare. What’s it gonna take to wake us up? A fucking fist in our face? And why didn’t I hear about the bill?  Because every gay mag focuses on bodybuilders and bar events? I make my living at club events, but let’s pull together as a community for our own good. I’m a slut and love sex, but I’d also like to protect my rights. I think we should expect a little more balanced coverage of issues and swimsuit issues from our gay publications.”

Lady Bunny has been featured in a number of movies.  She recently finished shooting a role for “Another Gay Sequel” which is the follow-up to the popular “Another Gay Movie.”  When asked how she got this role and what the audience can expect from the film, she quipped “I was asked to do a staged reading of the script for the NYC Gay & Lesbian Film Festival last June. The reading went well, and the director even decided to make my part a little bigger. Being a big ham, naturally I was thrilled!  I play Sandi Cove who is a trashy, loud-mouthed drag queen emcee who wears big blonde wigs and too much make-up–so I guess you could say it’s typecasting!  I’ve only seen one clip, and it was a hoot. I actually haven’t seen the original movie, but it has quite a cult following. And the word is that this one is even sicker, with a bigger budget and more production value.  Plus there are campy cameos from Perez Hilton, Michael Lucas, Scott Thompson and Karen Black!!! Not to mention that it’s set in Fort Lauderdale, so all of the hunks are in swimwear! Slurp!”

Lady Bunny shares the spotlight with her drag sister RuPaul in this film.  It has been a long while since the two of them have spent so much time together.   “It was fantastic! It was the most time that Ru and I have spent together in years, and we really re-connected and remembered what attracted us to each other in the first place–our sick sense of humor! Ru and I also dueted on a song for the movie which I think will be included. And I also have a cameo in RuPaul’s film STARRBOOTY, in which I play a lesbian with crabs who treats Ru to my ‘seafood dinner.’ Are you boys hard yet?”

As in the original movie, there are a few Gay Male Porn Stars in the cast.  How were the guys to work with on this film? “The Jarics were a hoot, and Ru and I hung out with them a lot–both very sweet. Pompano Bill

Many of you reading this may have never heard of J W Calcaterra or as he is affectionately know, ‘Pompano Bill.’  But if you have ever traveled to Fort Lauderdale you’ve probably seen, or been lucky enough to be photographed by him.  At 82 years young, Pompano Bill has been photographing and documenting gay life in and around Fort Lauderdale for the past 20 years.  His images frequently appear in local magazines and have been featured in local gallery exhibitions. He is a man who has been happily gay for 62 years always experiencing life to the fullest.

Born January 12, 1926, in Michigan, just before the Great Depression, Pompano Bill is quick to point out “I grew up at a time before the word Gay was even invented and Cole Porter had not written about it yet.  I think the first time I ever heard the word was while I was living in Detroit around 1950.”  He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and it was during that time that he recalls his first attraction to men.  “While I was aboard the ship I realized that I was attracted to some of the other men, but I was scared to death to act on it.  One time I was standing at the rail of the ship and another sailor came up next to me and brushed his arm up against mine; that made me very nervous so I just moved away.”  By the age of 20, WWII was over.  After being in Japan, his ship docked in San Francisco where he had his first encounter with another man.  “I was walking down Market Street and went into a bar called the Old Crow. This young handsome man came up to me and asked me if I wanted to join his table. Later he took me to the Sir Francis Drake for Singapore Slings and then to the Fairmont Hotel for dinner. We went back to his place later for my first homosexual experience.”  Unfortunately, the following week Pompano Bill was sent back to the Great Lakes Navel Training Station in New York and he never saw his first again.

After the war, he moved back home, to a small town of only 3,750 people.  He quickly realized the need to go someplace else to pursue his desires. He attended Ferris State College and later enrolled at The Detroit Institute of Technology.  After completing college in 1953, he began working for IBM and continued working for the company until1987.  Being employed by IBM afforded him the opportunity to live in great cities such as Detroit, Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.  When asked what gay life was like in the late 40’s to early 50’s Pompano Bill stated; “I was in Detroit from 1947 to 1953. Downtown on Farmers Street there were four gay bars and they were all very well attended.  Of course people were not living out in the open, but the bars seemed to function pretty well.  We never really saw much harassment. That came later while I was living in Chicago.”  What happened in Chicago is something for the history books.  “One Sunday afternoon, I was going to a bar and as I was walking in, the bar the managers whispered in my ear “go away.”  Later that afternoon the bar was raided and everyone was hauled off to jail. Bars were being raided regularly back then. The police would pull up in front of the bar with big black wagons and take everyone away arresting them.  It was against the law for homosexuals to congregate. The guys would have to post a $25.00 bail and the following day their names would appear in the Chicago Tribune.  “My job was saved that day by the bar manager telling me to go away. If my name had appeared in the paper I would have lost my job at IBM.”  That was the only time he came close to being part of a raid.  He feels lucky he was never arrested for being gay.  “Unfortunately, the same types of raids were also going on in NYC and of course, that’s what started the Stonewall Riots.”  The beginning of what we call Gay Pride.

At a time when the USA was in strife, and activism was all the rage; Pompano Bill recalls he mainly threw himself into his work at IBM.  Bill states IBM is a very gay friendly company today and was somewhat progressive back then.  “I never pussy- footed around about who I was.”  “Once my boss’s boss told me my business was my business, as long as I did not get the company involved.”  He does recall however, if you were not married, you did not advance as quickly in your job.  “Married men got preference and if you had children you got better raises.”

New York City’s Greenwich Village is known today as the epicenter of the Gay Rights Movement worldwide because of the Stonewall Riots in 1969.  Prior to the riots taking place Pompano Bill lived in the ‘Village’ from 58’ to 60’  “Living in the Village at that time was amazing and it was my first taste of true freedom.  For me it was worriless freedom as the Village was heavily populated by gay men.”  Outside of New York, his second greatest experience was living in San Francisco from 78’ to 80.’  “It was a great place to live.”  On the downside, he was there when Harvey Milk was shot, and when the AIDS virus was first being spread.  “I was working 60 to 80 hours a week and I did not have the time others had to frequent the bars and get too involved in the sexual side of the city.  Not that I didn’t have sex, I was just a little less promiscuous than others I suppose.”

“All my life, no matter where I lived I enjoyed life and I am blessed to have never felt oppressed or discriminated against.  I am a very happy person and I often say I am not gay, I am happy!”  When asked if he felt his experience was typical for gay men of his generation he said “most of the people I knew over all these years were pretty much the same as me.  We all enjoyed life, loved, had parties and really did not have many major problems.  But life becomes disturbing when you hear about people like Matthew Shepherd or Michael Brown who was just recently murdered by an ex-lover in West Palm Beach.  These were good people taken away from us for senseless reasons. Michael was a friend of mine for 20 years and his death is very sad.  Hate is a horrible thing and I believe the people doing violent acts truly hate themselves”

When asked how the AIDS crisis impacted his life, he stated “The first time I was aware of the crisis was in 1980 when IBM transferred me back to White Planes. I would go to Fire Island to plant geraniums at a friend’s house.  That was the first time I saw people collecting money for what was being called gay cancer.  In 1983 I was transferred to LA, which was the year they came out with the HIV test.  I had myself tested and I remember hugging and kissing the Doctor when I got my negative results.  I was scared to death as everyone was at that time.”

In 1987 he retired from IBM and moved to Pompano Beach, Florida.  By the early 90’s he was bored and he began taking photos at bars in and around Fort Lauderdale.  “My thing was to go to bars and events and take photos of people, and then when I saw those people later I would give photos to those people for them to enjoy.”  He had his first images published in the now defunct SCOOP magazine in 1992, and became more involved with favorite charities.  He keeps his camera with him, loves taking photos of people who are living their life to the fullest.  Pompano Bill does not proclaim to be a professional photographer. He simply loves taking photos of people.

Some of his more notable shots are of people such as Janet Reno, Phil Donahue, Jeff Stryker, Howard Dean, RuPaul, Liza Minnelli, and Chi Chi LaRue.

Over the years, Pompano Bill has certainly seen his fair share of porn. “I have nothing against gay porn, as long as it is done well and does not feature scrawny kids with dirty fingernails.  It has to have a story and be photographed well for me to really like it.”  He saw his first gay porn on 16 millimeter in Chicago around 1954.  “A guy I knew had them on film and he would project them on a wall.  He was arrested because it was illegal to have porn back then.” Today he still has a nice collection of porn, but rarely watches it anymore because there is so much going on in the South Florida gay community. “At 82 I do not need Viagra, at least not for a hug, a kiss and a grope” he said while laughing.

Gay Pride means many things to many people. “I am proud of the fact that in spite all of our setbacks, horrible politicians, puritans, red necks, right wingers,  and the religious right spreading hate, we as a community have made great strides to become important to our Country.  We continue to keep our heads up high and to me that is great pride!”  When asked what his hope for the future is, he said; “Less hate and more cure”.

Many of you may not know it, but there is an NGBA as apposed to the NBA.  Of course, there are many differences, but the main one is that the NGBA is for anyone gay or gay-friendly who’d like to shoot some hoops.  There are teams all over the country and teams from other countries often come out to compete.  You didn’t think GayGames was it, did you? 

The West Coast Classic is one of the biggest annual gay sport tournaments in the U.S that also features some European teams.  This year the WCC will host 20 teams on MLK Weekend,  January 19-20, 2008. Lambda Basketball is the host for this years tournament in Los Angeles.  As with the Gaymes, each city usually packs the weekend full of events that anyone can attend.  I can tell you that as a player, we get no greater feeling than having a crowd come out to watch the games then party with us afterwards.  I won’t be in town for this years tournament because I’m swamped with other things, but I wish I was going to be there, and you won’t want to miss it if you are in the area.
