We have some excellent hospitals in our area - URMC is one of the top 50 Teaching Hospitals - their Neurosurgery program is ranked 5th - my mom had the Head doc in charge.

Our "competing" hospital organizations have cooperated for decades - they were a model for the country at one point - still are.

I have had good luck with hospitals. Only problem is that you can never get sleep. Always waking you up during the night either giving meds or taking vitals.

    For years.

Watched Johnny Quest, and a host of others (heavy ITV fan) back in the day.

How about the old B&W Saturday PM grade B movies?

For some reason (I can't remember why) I'm opposed to donating my organs after my death. I also believe in an opt-in system as opposed to the opt-out system some countries have.

I have no religious objections (I'm an atheist), I don't think I'd want someone else's organ(s) in me (apart from my partner's ) if it came to that. Maybe I'll change my mind when/if the time comes and I'm faced with that option.

I do however believe that everybody should make that choice for them self regardless of what I feel for me. I have no objection with organ donation and or transplants as such.

Do you think that fertility treatment should be part of the NHS? (in the UK that is the National Health Service, I have no idea what that's called on the other side of the pond or if IVF is part of national healthcare)

We don't have National Health Care as such - but most medical insurance policies do cover Fertility treatment, IVF, as well as hysterectomies and vasectomies - once snipped, I don't believe insurance will pay for an undo, though.

Yes, I am glad it is covered.

I am also on the Organ Donor registry. Given my Heart Attack at some point in the past and being a Type II diabetic, I don't know if they'll use my organs or not. I was on the HLA registry, but they removed me after the Angioplasty and Diabetes diagnoses.

I am an ongoing organ donor though - I am an apheresis (platelet) blood donor - I try to give every other week.
I've donated in excess of 100 units of whole blood and platelets.

    Do you have siblings?

No, well I was till they started singing. I'm not a fan of the original, MJ was more my sister's kind of music, she had that LP back in the day. I was into Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, New Wave, disco...

I feel like I've answered this question before -
We're big Doctor Who fans, also buy the DVD sets for Game of Thrones since we don't have cable.
Star Trek, the two Sherlock Holmes shows, Person of Interest, etc.

Grew up with 50's thru 70's rock, ballads, etc. Beatles, Stones, Doors, The Who, Moody Blues, Peter Paul and Mary, Chicago, and a host of others.

I'm not a super big fan of MJ, either, but I enjoy the way MHJR rework songs.

    Movies that you like?

I'm a big science fiction fan. I got hooked on it because of my uncle who worked for Granada Publishing in the 70's gave me Triplanetary, the first of EE 'Doc' Smith's Lensman series and it blew me away (I was only 12 at the time). So I've always enjoyed reading Scifi and watching SF movies.
StarTrek and Star Wars are big favourites, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind is in my top 10 fave movies.
I bawled my eyes out at Torch Song Trilogy, Joy Luck Club, Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon.
I love Hero, though I'm not a big Jet Li fan. I love Pricilla, Queen of the Desert and Muriel's Wedding and spent many an hour at the cinema with friends watching them.

A lot of movies I love because Ian and I used to watch a movie or a boxset of DVDs before we got the TV working in our bedroom, they hold such dear memories. Hairspray is one that springs to mind, we laughed and cried through that. Soppy I know but then I am.

As you get older, maybe you get harder, or maybe you get more reflective.

I suppose I can be both.
Sentimental favourites of intense passion (not necessarily sexual - just intense feelings of one of the three loves) can bring a tear to my eye.

I shed more than a tear or two when our pony boy left this mortal coil.

    Dr-B,
Welcome to Fun and Games - this thread is all about getting to know your fellow JUBber, so you're not intruding any more than any of us did the first time we posted here.

You've been on JUB almost as long as I have - I've just been a wee bit more vocal in posting. Let's see if we can get you out of your shell and posting all over F&G.

I've received the "call the night before" notifications for Jury Duty, but never had to serve.
I think I might enjoy it, but my employer isn't one who makes it easy to do.

My wife has been on both Grand Jury - a 6 week stint, and on regular Jury Duty that she had to go in for a day or two.

We sound a lot alike - although I have experienced the loss of in-laws and my dad. My mom is still with us - and we're praying on that one long term. More details around the F&G forum. I won't go into details.

Love them for all they're worth.

What parts of JUB have you been frequenting the most, even if you haven't been posting?

I've been to Lake Havasu City, Arizona to the West - Blythe, California might be a tad further West but I only drove through on the way to Las Vegas.

I've been as far South as Houston, TX and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts to the East within the country.
I live about as far North as I've ever been in my country - been out on Lake Ontario, so that's a few miles further, but Canada isn't all that far away.

Do you enjoy roasted Cornish Game Hens?

No my skin is too Celtic for that, I go bright red and flaky unless I apply a sunscreen. Beside that I get bored just floundering about on a towel/sun lounger. Ian offered to take me to the Maldives once and I turned it down, I can't just lie there waiting for the UV's to bake me to a crisp, I have to do something or sightsee or else I get stressed.

I'm a HUGE Star Trek Fan! Even had the opportunity to meet, and chat with, Gene Roddenberry, back in the late 70s, between the original TV series demise, and the first Star Trek movie's debut, which lead to the advent of the following multiple TV shows and movies.

I thought most of the offshoots, and ensuing films, even after Gene's death, did an incredible job of carrying on His vision!

However, I wasn't all that thrilled with the first Star Trek movie, the ones that Shatner directed, nor the TV Star Trek "Enterprise". I'm still a fan of Bill Shatner, and Scott Bacula, though.

    My favorite is "Next Generation".

Have you ever found yourself thinking that you were watching TOO much TV?

I used to be, and I may be tonight, but most of the time anymore I have to go to bed because I have to be up early and this old crow can't burn the midnight oil like he used to.

I'm a big Trekkie. TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, the Movies, didn't have cable so only saw limited Generations when it was on FOX.
I have to agree re: the movies - the original movie was stuffy - it took awhile for them to loosen up and get back in the irreverent groove. Of course, societal norms had marched on since the mid '60s, too.

I'm really enjoying the new movies - I think they've done a great job reinfusing the early 'tude with high powered action - and the juxtapositions of what was but now is is great, too.

What do you think about the Spielberg Franchise on Star Wars - the "first" three from the early days vs, the "prequel" movies?

    Re: "Getting to know you...

I think there are problems with it.

I'm a big fan of SW A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. I grew up with those movies, watched them multiple times in cinema, on video and went to see the 20th anniversary re-releases in the cinema.
For me where the prequel series lost it was in The Return of the Jedi. First half of the movie was brilliant and then we got those bloody Ewoks.

For me the prequel series Phantom Menace had a similar problem in JarJar Binks, who was a complete pain in the arse. Technologically the prequel was much more advanced due to the amount and quality of the CGI involved which makes the older episodes feel really dated.

On a story level I think there are problems with the prequels as well. I found the love story quite unconvincing (Hayden Christensen not being a particularly good actor, I'm not even going to go anywhere near the age gap between Amidala and Anakin)

I've never really understood the whyness of Emperor Palpatine, I would have loved to know why he became Sith.

Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan was a bit wooden, I don't think he was the right person to play that character, too young as well.

There's a lot of stuff that is to be admired. I thought the new CGI Yoda was absolutely brilliant, we love Yoda. Mace Windu rocked as well, I would actually have loved to seen more of him. I loved the darkness of Revenge of the Sith, that was brilliantly done.

    I could go on...

What do you think of the fact that Disney has now required the movie rights to Star Wars and is planning another 3 part sequel?

I am sore afraid, to quote a phrase from somewhere.

Much as I enjoy most of the Disney Franchise, this does worry me - Spielberg supposedly retains some control in the artistic plot line, but given some of the rewriting he did when they re-released the first three movies, I have some reservations there, too.

Yeah, I grew up with the first three, had a bit of a hard time with the second three.
I try not to be as much a "purist" as my kids can be (HP and LoTR critiques, much?!), but there were definitely things I didn't care for in the latter. TBH, I did enjoy the comic relief of Jar Jar Binks, though. I know, I'm in the vast minority on that one.

Do you have any specific plans for this Summer?

No not really. My mom and sister are coming to visit at the end of next month (they live in Holland). We might go to Cyprus in September, although I think I'd prefer to go to the Isle of Santorini. I'm not quite sure, as long as it's not too warm, I don't much mind where we go as long as it's just the two of us.

    You?

Our son just flew in today for a month to mainly stay with my mom and help her w/ radiation treatments/being able to stay home instead of going to my brothers - 20 minutes to hospital and more normal routine vs. 1hour plus each way and out in the country not near any of her friends.

His wife is coming in a couple of weeks.
We want to do some things with them while they're here - we have tickets for Great Big Sea on 18 July - Rochester is their last stop before going home for a couple of weeks - a Party in the Park concert with some less known acts. A steal at $5/ticket - $6.65 with the Ticketmaster fees. They cost a LOT more than that in Toronto and other major venues.

I can cook many things fairly well. I'm not limited to grilling meat.
I can make quick breads, pies, cakes, even yeast raised if I were to take the time.

Occasionally the family cries foul at my spicing, but that's how you learn, lol.

What types of things do you like making in the kitchen?

chicken satay and peanut sauce with egg fried rice and I do a nice currie when I'm in the mood.
Basically I cook anything that is Indonesian, Chinese, Thai or otherwise Asian or Indian. Ian is great with the more traditional menu i.e. roast beef/pork belly/chicken/lamb. His roast potatoes are yummy!

What did you study when you were in school/college/university?

Engineering Science then Manufacturing Engineering Technology w/ a concentration on management.
I also as an AAS in Data Processing, not that I've ever been a programmer.
Used the thought processes, and the knowledge of being able to read who's blowing smoke on occasion, though.

    How about you?
