How much are you paying at the pump?

How much are you paying for a gallon of gas? Today I paid $2.45 for regular unleaded. That's 60 cents more than I was paying just 6 months ago.

I work as a repair plumber, which means that I'm in my truck most of the day. I went to fill up my truck today and discovered that I had to pay 14 more cents per gallon than I paid on Monday.

My business has slowed down so much that it's getting pretty frightening. I know that there's work out there, but no one is calling. When it comes to putting food in their mouths, and gas in the car, people are learning to live with dripping faucets, stopped up commodes, and no hot water.

But hey! Bush says that we've got a great economy, so it must be true.

(For my fellow friends here in JUB that don't live in the U.S., I know that y'all probably pay more than we do, but this hasn't been a gradual increase it's been in 10 cent increments, for weeks now. My pay hasn't increased to keep up with it, and in fact I've been losing business because everyone else is in the same boat is myself.)
Never regret anything, because in that moment it's exactly what you wanted.

Yeah, so check this one out!

Monday: I got paid and decided to fill up. Price was $2.259 but the place I go was very busy, so I decided I'd do it later.

Tuesday: Well I forgot until I was coming home from work but noticed the price was $2.299.

    Wednesday
: When I finally got around to fueling up, the price I paid for regular unleaded was $2.399.

Wednesday night: When I was leaving work, the price was back down to $2.299.

Thursday night: After work, the thing was back to $2.399!!

Friday: Sister came home and reported $2.479 today.

    I mean, what the fuck!?!?

This is not a good time to manage a gas station. Before I left work today I raised the price to $2.65 for unleaded. I feel like I need a bullet proof vest when I go out to change the sign.

BTW, it is extra hard on me as I live 30 miles from work and have to pay full price.

A friend of mine owns a Chevron here in town, and he says that they make about a penny a gallon; the rest of the money pays the tax and pays for the gasoline. All the profit is in the food inside. Plus, you have to sell so may gallons to break even when someone drives off without paying.

Here in Melbourne it's currently about AUD 1.20 per litre.

I think that's about USD 0.92 per litre.

I think it's about 1:3.8 to convert litres to US gallons so I think we're paying about 3.50 - which is still much cheaper than most Western countries.

About 18 months ago we were paying 20% less than we're paying today.

The average price in the UK is 94p/litre. It has risen by about 15p/litre in the last 12 months. 75% of that goes into Brown's back pocket.

You'll have to do your own arithmetic to work that into $/gallon because I cannae be arsed.

    From Reuters ...

Exxon posted a 32 percent rise in quarterly profit, pushed up by soaring crude prices and strong refining margins. Exxon shares rose 40 cents to $60 on the NYSE.

Why do so many of you have such cheap gas?

I haven't seen $2.49 in a long long long time. $2.31 is insanely cheap. I'm thinking it sort of looks like the rural areas have cheaper gas than the urban areas????

I guess Washington is like Oregon (I saw your post _X_) - I have a hard time finding anything for less than $2.79, and I won't put crap gas in my engine. I'm more used to $2.88/gallon.

Thanks Ben, for making us Americans look at the reality of the situation.

    I guess I shouldn't complain about paying $2.79 a gallon the other
day. That is the highest I believe I have ever paid for gasoline.

Of course the next day it took me over 2 1/2 hours to drive about 7 miles to get to my home. There was a major accident on the frwy. It was closed. Guess where all those cars end up going - of course on to the major surface streets. Traffic is bad in Los Angeles but I have never experienced anything like last Thurs. What a nightmare. Yet people managed to be very polite when letting other people get in front of them. I would never have thought we could be that polite, but we were. Miracles happen every day.

Gasoline is much more expensive in Europe, but that doesn't mean a large percentage increase in the U.S. isn't devastating to an economy based on cheap oil. We pay much more in Canada than in the U.S. but the difference is all in taxes, as the underlying commodity costs the same on both sides of the border (subject to small differences in transportation costs).

This jump in gas prices will eventually work its way down to everything we buy, as the costs of trucking, heating oil, and manufacturing go up. It's a bit of a scary proposition... especially since almost no one thinks the price will go back down anytime soon.

It cost me well over $80 CAN to fill my vehicle the other day with premium... which was the highest I've ever paid by far.

None of this is cheap. That's the problem. Two years ago I was bitching about paying $1.799. Today, I'd gladly pay that as compared to $2.479! And have you noticed how the refineries are blowing up with regularity every 2-3 months? Hmm. Smells like a conspiracy to me. Or maybe I'm just pissed the hell off about paying an ungodly amount of money to get to school/work and back every day. How much per gallon are we paying in fuel taxes? Why are we paying record high prices when we're "staying the course" in one of the most oil-rich countries in the world?

I paid $2.05 on Friday and $2.10 today. I filled up as I have been told not to expect to pay that price again as a hike is on the way. I saw gas North of Columbus where I live for $2.67. $3 by fall will be a reality I'm told.

I'm very concerned as well, I travel 70 miles round trip to work 5-6 days a week. My yearly raise disappeared 2 fill ups ago. The US lags behind the rest of the world (especially Europe) in developing and using alternate fuel sources. I'm afraid we are about to pay the price.

    Some interesting statistics ...

If they were just "passing on the increased costs of oil," their profits would
match the profits they made when Clinton was president.

    just a casual observation.

The other day I gassed up the car. $2.37 per gallon... With what I already had in the tank, that came out to $24 and change. I know its a little cheaper here (Thursday/Friday last week in Houston, gas was $2.45 per gallon), but when you haven't seen a pay raise in more than 2 years (they have to be voted upon by the legislature) this is a nasty cost of living reality.

Of course I blame "W" for this. But then, I blame the ache in my knee to him and anything else that strikes my ire these days. He's a very convenient scape-goat!

It's costs me over $50 to fill up my tank(car). And it's been that way for a while I remember when I was younger riding in my mom's car, and gas prices were only 52 cents/litre, and it was around $30 to fill the tank. Oh, how I dream for prices like that. I just hope it goes down from $1.06/litre... but they say that by Christmas it'll be up to $1.40 a litre here...

Yes, but hwo does conversion rate figure into all this?

You made a pounds to dollars conversion. Ok, fine. BUT, how much does the average UK citizen make per year in pounds?

    Your $6.17 a gallon, for example, is 3.42 pounds.gallon.

Is a briton spending 3.42 pounds "feel" the same to them as an American spending $3.42 per gallon? Prices in some areas are now above $3. Is this the same "hit" to the wallet?

I saw it questioned on another board... if you can get a big mack for one pound on the pound saver menu at McDonalds...and can get a big mac for $1 on the Dollar menu in America... does that mean that this is a great deal for BOTH sides?

This morning, as I drove to work, the gas was 2.549/gallon .. left work, drove home, and it was 2.639/gallon ... heard something on tv (weather channel or CNN) that with the hurricane in Louisiana/Mississippi, there was a halt in oil production from the rigs there, and that gas prices would likely rise 10 cents or so ... I got some gas today, hopefully it doesn't go up more, but would rather get it now rather than when it hits 3.009

You know, T, any other time I might agree with you. Right now, though, all I want is to pay less than $2 for a gallon of fuel--the rest of it be damned. Why? Because it won't really matter if the people have subsidized this or that if they can't pay for the gas to get there or pick it up or what have you.

Since last I posted (earlier this evening!), our wonderful gas stations have raised prices once again. From the 5:00a.m. low of $2.599 to the 10:00p.m. high of: $3.169. That's right. A $0.57 cent spike in fuel price within the space of 17 hours. This has absofuckinglutely nothing to do with the hurricane nor the supposed impending shortage. There is no shortage. This has only to do with the bottom lines of oil companies and commodities traders. It's absurd!

Snapcat, bring on the charts and graphs, would you, please?

I filled up last night for $2.39. Tonight when I drove home, it was $2.69. Damn.

And I expect it will go up more before it goes back down. IF it goes back down.

Re: How much are you paying at the pump?

Gasoline finally made the jump here today. I was suprised it didn't happen earlier this week. We went from $2.42 to $2.89 a gallon. I was expecting it; this was perhaps the most expected and anticipated jump in gas prices. Some gas stations in Lexington did not get a load of fuel. Most gas here comes via the New Orleans - Knoxville pipeline, and we all know there won't be more coming through that pipeline in the near future. By first glance it looks like the refineries in the Gulf made it through the hurricane in better shape than expected. But there still is no power.

The "buzz" from my friends at Chevron said that they were waiting for Bush to release that gas from the petroleum reserves. Bush said he was considering it. But he should have acted by now. That inaction has driven the market crazy.

And just what is Bush doing at this time of American tragedy?

It's SO NICE to see that he is getting on with his life! He is really good at that!

Of course it is typical for gasoline to spike around the Labor Day holiday. But to examine the price of today's gasoline we have to go back a bit. The oil company lobby has a tight grip on Washington - both dems and GOP. The new energy bill passed by congress provides huge tax breaks for big oil companies. Thos big oil companies are awash in record profits.

Upstream or downstream, Big Oil profit is soaring

    By Steven Mufson
There's no question that the drain on the average American's pocketbook has been a gusher for the big oil companies. Just look at the financial statements issued at the end of July. Exxon Mobil Corp.'s second quarter earnings climbed 35 percent from the second quarter of 2004 (after excluding special items) to $7.64 billion. BP PLC, the world's second-largest publicly traded oil company, said its net income increased 29 percent, to $5.59 billion. At Royal Dutch Shell PLC, second-quarter profits rose 34 percent to $5.24 billion. ConocoPhillips, the third-largest U.S. oil company, reported an eye-popping 51 percent jump in earnings, to $3.14 billion.

Now let's put this is a bit of perspective.

Just how big is a company like Exxon Mobil? Its sales in the second quarter were $88.6 billion, a rate that would make its revenues larger than the gross domestic product of all but 18 or so countries — and a bit bigger than Wal-Mart's sales. Exxon Mobil's profits for the quarter were about 50 percent more than Citigroup's and 2 1/2 times Microsoft's.
The Missouri Attorney General investigated this in whole situation in 2000 and came up with NO PROOF of illigal activity. If you'll recall, we were complaining of gasoline prices of over $1.75 a gallon, then.

So, this is all perfectly legal. The American people must demand that their legislators address the price of gasoline. But that doesn't seem to be happening. We complain and then the topic fades away until the next big gas hike. We all know that George Bush has made millions in the oil business. But so have SO MANY others. Condi Rice was a Chevron Oil director from 1991 until she came to work for Bush. Wanna take a guess of how many Big Oil? Wanna guess who the biggest donar to Bush's war chest?

Bush was the No. 1 recipient of energy industry money, collecting more than $1.8 million in contributions, more than any other candidate for federal office received over the last decade.

If there was any reason to be suspicious of the White House’s intentions in regard to Iraq, certainly the fact that Cheney held closed-door meetings with the leaders of the energy industry immediately upon taking office -- and then refused to release the record of those discussions or the names and corporate affiliations of the participants -- should at least raise a few eyebrows in the media. That’s not to suggest that these private discussions related to American security interests in Iraq and the Middle East. Rather, what it says is that the interests of the oil companies are never far from the thoughts of Bush and Cheney.
Did you know that Chevron named an oil supertanker after Condoleza Rice?

    Just food for thought ....

Driving home today, a big flux in prices, with the usually cheaper stations actually being the most expensive. Here's the list, all are in Phillipsburg, NJ, except for the Easton Exxon:
    2.739 - Getty
    2.759 - Shell
    2.799 - Exxon & Mobil
    2.819 - Hess
    2.869 - Easton Exxon
    2.899 - Citgo, Gulf(Mico), US Gas

Likely the stations that are usually cheaper are not branded stations and thus are lower priorities for gasoline delivery. The same thing is happening here, and it's because they won't get a gasoline shipment this week. Maybe in a few days, but unsure.

Indeed, oil is like crack to the industrialized world. If you jacked up the price of gas in ANY modern economy, the economy tanks.

You need to "wean" yourself off of it instead... which NO modern industrialized country (and let's remember this all you painfully Americentric people out there) has really done much to address.

Let's all remember, for example, that Gulf War 1 was fought for EUROPE'S continued ensured oil supply.

I try not to look at the price, it is crazy. I know to fill up my car was $30 now its $50, I know its close to $3 a gallon. Hope the bush family spends thier money well. I cant believe that the price of gas jumped before the huricane hit, even the news here in Arizona was questioning that. and as far as eruope is concerned, what is the average commute there? where a country is the size of a state here? I drove 70 miles yesterday to take my car to the dealer, the only dealer that can service it here. Its great to know that "W" is doing his part to keep money in his and his family and friends pockets. We do all remember that he and his family are in the oil business? Once again he drags us down and suprising enough he is still in office. God Help us all.

I filled up the day before the prices rose drastically, for completely different reasons .. it's definitely a good thing though, and I shouldn't need to get gas for another month or so now

The price in Mass. is just under $3.00 right now. 2.85 and up.

I saw on FOX news tonight that some stations in Atlanta are charging $5.50 a gallon. That is gauging and they should be hung. (physically)

Re: How Much Did You Pay At The Pump?

On CNN news tonight they showed people in Atlanta at long gas lines already. One station was selling at $5.50 a gallon, the one across the street was at $5.87 for regular and $6.07 for premium! YIKES!

Here in Connecticut this morning it was $2.70 a gallon. By 5pm it was already up to $3.07
I'm sure tomorrow it will be much higher after the rest of the country watches CNN news!

My 75 Eldorado gets 10 mpg and has a 27 gallon fuel tank. At $3.70 a gallon it will cost me an even $100 to fill the tank. Thank goodness I only use that car for sunny days. I am taking it to PTOWN next week on vacation. I wonder how high the price will be then?

The news also said they may start rationing gas again.
