A song on the album "Moonshadow" by Labelle entitled "If I Can't Have You".
It is set to start off as this very moving gospel-like song, but then you realize it's a song about a realtionship gone awry. All of the elements are there involving broken trust, mistreatment, denial........sigh...for a little over three minutes Patti Labelle (lead vocals ,and does she lead OMG!!!),Nona Hendryx and Sara Dash( background vocals)....awesome song!!! You can feel the hurt and pain. SIGH!!!!!!Tight musicians on Hammond organ,guitar,bass......you gotta get this one!!!!It has been re-issued on CD ( originally on vinyl on Warner/ Reprise) I got mine on-line from DustyGrooves.

really , that happens to be one of my favorite songs of hers, the one with bone thugs.

If I had to pick a few I would say

    Jewel - FOOLISH GAMES

    Dixie chicks - LANDSLIDE

and that one song A wonderful world . That song gives me the chills.

Re: saddest song you ever heard?

Ok a couple things to say, can the person who put the lyrics to "You" from Evanescence up, please take them down. Amy Lee has asked that no one even listens to this song, or put up lyrics as it is private to her. It was actually stolen from her and put online and she is asking that it be (song itself, and lyrics) taken off the internet.

Also, the saddest song I have heard is (already mentioned before somewhere) "Hello" from Evanescence. The power of Amy's voice is amazing, and you can feel every emotion that she had while writing this song, through both her words, and her vocals. I guess this song meant a lot to her since it was written for her sister who had passed away. Amy gets so emotional during that this song that she can't even play it live in concerts because its too personal to her.

Their second album has a really sad song called "smile"

    Both albums are amazing though.

I love that song, I heard that song on the WB'S tv show 'Popular.'
STRANGELY, one of my song choices sortof pair up with that one. On the second season DVD, they replaced all the original songs, and the replacement for that one was some song that I've been looking everywhere for. Here's some of the lyrics (very difficult to interprete, so I sortof added in some words to try give myself something to actually say when I have the song stuck in my head:

"Whether I've got a ways to go,
I'm high above the patchwork of Ohio.
I should be without my rout and raw soul,
but at the rate I'm goin'...
    ...I don't know.

    I feel like I don't remember,
And I search for you in the patterned nest below.
But is it summer air or snow?

Whether I've got a ways to go,
Like your old mother did back in Milwaukke.
    I'm high above...
    ...the patchwork of Ohio.
Tryin' to find the sense to end my ariel."

God, that's sad! A lost soul.

Some other of my most melancholy tunes are:

"In The Air Tonight" -Phil Collins
    "All I Know" -Art Garfunkel
"Answer" -Sarah Mcluaghlin (never known how to spell her last name)

No Lies Just Love by Bright Eyes

It was in the march of the winter
    I turned seventeen
    That I bought those pills
    I thought I would need
    And I wrote a letter
    To my family
    Said it's not your fault
And you've been good to me
    Just lately I've been feeling
    Like I don't belong
    Like the ground's not mine
    To walk upon
    And I've heard that music
    Echo through the house
    Where my grandmother drank
    By herself
And I sat watching a flower
    As it was withering
    I was embarrassed by
    It's honesty
So I'd prefer to be remembered
    As a smiling face
    Not this fucking wreck
    That's taken it's place

So please forgive what I have done
No, you can't stay mad at the setting sun
We all get tired, I mean, eventually
There is nothing left to do but sleep

    But spring came bearing sunlight
    Those persuasive rays
    So I gave myself
    A few more days
    My salvation, it came
    Quite suddenly
    When Justin spoke
    Very plainly
He said, "Of course it's your decision
    But just so you know
    If you decide to leave
    Soon I will follow"

I wrote this for a baby
Who has yet to be born
    My brother's first child
I hope that womb's not too warm
    Because it's cold out here
And it will be quite a shock
    To breathe this air
    To discover loss
So I'd like to make some changes
    Before you arrive
So when your new eyes meet mine
    They won't see no lies

    Just love
    Just love
    I will be pure
No, no, I know I will be pure
    Like snow
    Like gold
    Like snow
    Like gold

    and

    Poison Oak by Bright Eyes

    Poison Oak some boyhood bravery.
when the telephone was a tin can on a string.
and I fell asleep with you still talking to me.
you said you weren't afraid to die.

In polaroids you were dressed in women's clothes.
were you made ashamed whyd you lock them in the drawer.

And I don't think that I ever loved you more.
    Than when you turned away.
    When you slammed the door.
When you stole the car drove towards Mexico.
And you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm.

I was young then I still believed in war.
But let the poets cry themselves to sleep.
and all their tearful words could turn back into steam.
me Im a single cell on a serpants tongue.
and theres a muddy field where a garden was
and I'm glad you got away.
but I'm still stuck out hear.
my clothes are soaking wet from your brothers tears.

And I never thought this life was possible.
You're the yellow bird that I've been waiting for.
The end of paralysis I was a statuette

Now I'm drunk as hell on a piano bench,
And when I press the keys it all gets reversed.
The sound of lonliness makes me happier.

Both tie for most amazing, but sad song Ive heard.

Johnny Cash - Hurt. This song is very sad, watching the video and the power in the music...it made tears come to my eyes when I first heard it.

Travellin Soldier by The Dixie Chicks as well is very sad.

Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me."
and a duet (so that makes me eligible for the second!) between Michael English & Winona Judd called "Healing" (sad, but in a good way).
Okay...one more: Angie Aparo's version of "Cry" (the song Faith Hill sings). It is pheNOMenal! I bet you all could relate!

Also Linda Perry~ Knock Me Out from The Crow Sdtrk. heart-wrenching i think its about when she was in an abusive relationship and her boyfriend used to beat her alot.

    Oh and one more
Nirvana~ Depressed i think its talking about when he was homeless and how sad and lonely he felt very gut wrenching song

not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet...but there's a remix of the song "heaven" by DJ Sammy. even though its originally a club track, this remix is slow, and sad, and there's a little girl that talks about how she'll see her dad some day; her dad who died in the 9/11 WTO attacks. its gotta be one of the saddest things i've ever heard. but its probably not one of those commiserate to get through the day kind of songs....

Re: saddest song you ever heard?

    I have a few

"Who Knew" from P!nk. I swear, the emotion and her voice in that song... especially the end: "If someone said three years from now that you'd be long gone/ I'd stand up and punch them out, cuz the're all wrong!/ And that last kiss/ I'll charish/ Until we meet again/ And time makes it harder/ I wish I could remember/ But I keep your memory/ You visit me in my sleep!!/ My darlin... who knew..." ... I still get watery eyes every now and then.

"Try" by Nelly Furtado. I believe someone else said it too, which I was kinda surprised because it was off her lesser known album Folklore. Something was so sad about it "Then I see you standin' there/ Watchin over me/ And all I can do is try/ Then I see you standin' there/ I'm all I'll ever be/ And all I can do is... try."

"Raven" by Lisa Marie Presley and "My Innocence" by Lindsay Lohan. They both hit home really hard because (E True Hollywood Story moment) my Mom has been in and out of prison my whole life, I never have really gotten to know my Mom so those songs really struck a cord. Lisa's was more of a "we still need to understand each other and I forgive you if you forgive me for not always being there when you were going through a hard time... and Lindsay is just the frustration I have of her just leaving me.

Lisa: "Wings uncertain oo but she's still flyin/ Yeah little raven, I see you there/ Hold your head up now/ And I wont try to pull your feathers out I promise/ ... / Why don't you fly with me and we'll have a chat and a cup of tea and a long lost need to see who's really there/ And you'll finally be ok with me and I'll hear your stories that fill your sad eyes when you had raven hair/ Hold your head up high/ I know that I've been ruthless/ I'm ruthless/ Go on dry your eyes/ And know that I've forgiven you/ And I'm sorry/ And everything 'til now/ It wasn't that bad really/ You beautiful lady."

And with Lindsay "You took my innocence away/ I never had a chance to/ You broke me in with your mistakes/ But thanks for the breakthrough/ But you wont bring me down/ I always come around/ You took my innocence away/ But the best of me stayed."

And even though it's not sad, I still get choked up over Lee Ann Womack "I Hope You Dance". I secretly dedicate that to my sister. "I hope you never lose your sense of wonder/ You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger/ May you never take one single breath for granted/ God forbid love ever leave you empty handed/ I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean/ Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens/ Promise me that youll give faith a fighting chance/ And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance/ I hope you dance....i hope you dance."

much more, but for another day.

    Death

    Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel

Is it a kind of dream,
    Floating out on the tide,
Following the river of death downstream?
    Oh, is it a dream?

There's a fog along the horizon,
A strange glow in the sky.
And nobody seems to know where you go.
    And what does it mean?
    Oh, is it a dream?

    Bright eyes,
    Burning like fire.
    Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
    Suddenly burn so pale?
    Bright eyes.

Is it a kind of shadow,
    Reaching into the night,
    Wandering over the hills unseen?
    Or is it a dream?

There's a high wind in the trees,
A cold sound in the air.
And nobody ever knows when you go.
    And where do you start,
    Oh, into the dark?

    Bright eyes,
    Burning like fire.
    Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
    Suddenly burn so pale?
    Bright eyes.

    Bright eyes,
    Burning like fire.
    Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
    Suddenly burn so pale?
    Bright eyes.

    Friendship

Two Little Boys - Rolf Harris

Two little boys had two little toys
    Each had a wooden horse
Gaily they played each summer's day
    Warriors both of course
One little chap then had a mishap
    Broke off his horse's head
Wept for his toy then cried with joy
    As his young playmate said

Did you think I would leave you crying
When there's room on my horse for two
Climb up here Jack and don't be crying
I can go just as fast with two
When we grow up we'll both be soldiers
And our horses will not be toys
And I wonder if we'll remember
When we were two little boys

Long years had passed, war came so fast
    Bravely they marched away
Cannon roared loud, and in the mad crowd
    Wounded and dying lay
Up goes a shout, a horse dashes out
Out from the ranks so blue
Gallops away to where Joe lay
Then came a voice he knew

Did you think I would leave you dying
When there's room on my horse for two
Climb up here Joe, we'll soon be flying
I can go just as fast with two
Did you say Joe I'm all a-tremble
    Perhaps it's the battle's noise
    But I think it's that I remember
When we were two little boys

Do you think I would leave you dying
There's room on my horse for two
Climb up here Joe, we'll soon by flying
Back to the ranks so blue
Can you feel Joe I'm all a tremble
    Perhaps it's the battle's noise
    But I think it's that I remember
When we were two little boys

Emmylou Harris - Love That Will Never Grow Old

Go to sleep, may your sweet dreams come true
Just lay back in my arms for one more night
I've this crazy old notion that calls me sometimes
Saying this one's the love of our lives.

    Refrain:
Cause I know a love that will never grow old
And I know a love that will never grow old.

When you wake up the world may have changed
But trust in me, I'll never falter or fail
Just the smile in your eyes, it can light up the night,
And your laughter's like wind in my sails.

    (Refrain)

Lean on me, let our hearts beat in time,
Feel strength from the hands that have held you so long.
Who cares where we go on this rutted old road
In a world that may say that we're wrong.

    (Refrain)

The Living Years - Mike + The Mechanics

    "..... I wasn't there that morning
    when my father passed away.
I didn't get to tell him

I think I caught his spirit

    São coisas de momento
    São chuvas de verão
Trazer uma aflição dentro do peito

So many of the songs from Les Miserables (best musical ever!) and Miss Saigon reduce me to tears every time I listen to them. My favourites ....

    From Les Mis .....

    I Dreamed a Dream
    Come to me (Fantine's Death)
    In My Life
    On My Own
    Bring Him Home
    Empty Chairs at Empty Tables

    From Miss Saigon .....

    The Movie in My Mind
    Why God Why?
    I Still Believe
I'd Give My Life For You

Father and Son .... Cat Stevens

    Father

Its not time to make a change,
    Just relax, take it easy.
Youre still young, thats your fault,
Theres so much you have to know.
    Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but Im happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that its not easy,
To be calm when youve found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything youve got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

    Son

How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
Its always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now theres a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

    Father

Its not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
Youre still young, thats your fault,
Theres so much you have to go through.
    Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but Im happy.
(son-- away away away, I know I have to
Make this decision alone - no)

    Son

All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
Its hard, but its harder to ignore it.
If they were right, Id agree, but its them you know not me.
Now theres a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
(father-- stay stay stay, why must you go and
    Make this decision alone? )

Re: saddest song you ever heard?

Not a sad song as such, but Westlife's You Raise Me Up always makes me weepy when I hear it, 'cos it makes me think of my beloved, beautiful Mum, who died about five years ago. She was my rock, my inspiration, my confidante, my guide and my best friend ....

    When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
    When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

    You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
    You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
    I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

    You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
    You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
    I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

    You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
    You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
    I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

    You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
    You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
    I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up... To more than I can be.

You raise me up... To more than I can be.

"Dance with My Father" Luther Vandross

Back when I was a child
before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
and dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around 'til I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved

If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
I'd play a song that would never, ever end
    How I'd love, love, love
To dance with my father again

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way, I would run from her to him
He'd make me laugh just to comfort me
Then finally make me do just what my mama said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him
I'd play a song that would never, ever end
    'Cause I'd love, love, love
To dance with my father again

Sometimes I'd listen outside her door
And I'd hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I'm praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved
I know you don't do it usually
    But dear Lord she's dying
To dance with my father again

Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream....

    I love you, Daddy.

Re: saddest song you ever heard?

One of the most beautiful, emotional and upsetting songs I have heard. This song ias about when Nikka's father died when she was a child and is just simply her playing the piano and singing it, no major production or anything just raw. It sounds sad but I cry every time I hear it because its what it does to me.

    Nikka Costa - Fatherless Child

    Heaven spoke too loud
    Left me a fatherless child
    Occurs to me everyday
But your memory makes me proud
    You're the one I hold
You're the first man I loved
    And all that follow
Have a mountain to rise above

And there's a hole inside of me
Where I put flowers so I can breathe
And though the winters have come and gone
You're still my heart, you're still my sun

    Somehow I always knew
What I lost was never gone
'Cause there's a part of you
Inside of me that carries on

And there's a hole inside of me
Where I put flowers so I can breathe
And though the winters have come and gone
You're still my heart, you're still my sun

    Heaven spoke too loud
    Left me a fatherless child
And there are time you know
I really wish you were around

And I'll try to make you proud
'Cause you're the break in every cloud
    And I'm convinced that's why
    The sun shines on me....

Yes, exactly! I thought I was the only one until I heard Trisha Yearwood say something similar on Larry King Live.

I always listen to sad songs when I'm sad..I think it kind of helps me to fully feel the emotion so I can be done with it.

By the way...you're cute as f*ck!!

I am going to say an old Evanescence song called Field of Innocense. I think almost everyone can relate to it:

I still remember the world from the eyes of a child. Slowly those feelings were clouded by what I know know.

    ::Chorus::
Oh where, where has my heart gone?
Trapped in the eyes of a stranger!
Oh I, I want to go back to
beleiving in everything and knowing nothing at all...

An extremely sad song about a woman who gets AIDS is Reba McEntire's "She Thinks His Name Was John"

    Some lyrics:
Now each day is one day that's left in her life
She won't know love, have a marriage or sing lullabies
She lays all alone and cries herself to sleep
'Cause she let a stranger kill her hopes and her dreams

    STRANGE FRUIT
    Music and Lyrics Lewis Allan
    Sung by Billie Holiday

    Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
