Musical "Come From Away" heads to Seattle before Broadway

"Come From Away" opened and perfected itself in San Diego. We were fortunate enough to see the penultimate performance this afternoon.

It is the story of the town of Gander, NewfoundLAND on that fateful day back in 2001.
Gander is a town of about 8000, with what at one time was the world's largest airport.

You see, back in the days before huge jetliners, all transatlantic planes had to stop at this first, closest point to the Americas for refueling. It was the jump off point for all allied planes headed to Europe for D-Day, too.

When the US closed its air space to all non-military flights following the planes as weapons attacks on 9-1-1, this sleepy town found itself hosting 38 transatlantic flights - for almost a week.

This is the story of the townsfolk and the diverted passengers - or at least the story of some of them.

It is a very "tight" production from the opening song to the very ending. An hour and forty-five minutes of production based on these peoples' lives that will resonate with anyone who was old enough to understand the global tragedy of that day.

This is perhaps the Window that God opened when that horrible door was closed at WTC, the Pentagon, and in the field in Pennsylvania that day.

If you are in the Seattle area and enjoy live theatre of the highest caliber, I highy recommend this musical. Bob Hallett ("Every Band should have a Bob") of Great Big Sea was the Newfoundland music consultant - the result was dynamic and mind-blowing.

Is Seattle a big theater town? Is it as important as say Chicago?

I'm not familiar with it, in general.

We found out about the musical because I'm subscribed to "Great Big Sea"'s website, and Bob Hallet, one of their three primary members, was the Newfoundland Music Consultant for the musical.

Timing, as they say, is everything. We were heading to San Diego to see our Son and D-i-L and managed to get tickets to the second to last performance in San Diego. It was fantastic.

Given the High Tech (Microsoft, Apple, etc.) in the area, I suspect Seattle has good arts - not as large as the Windy City and SCTV - Chicago has a much larger population.

I came across the writers' website tonight with synopses of their plays - and the performed music.

This is from a festival before the musical went to San Diego.
It's not as powerful as seeing the musical, but it gives you a feel for it.

(This has all of their plays, so there's more than Come From Away there to enjoy.)

This is just a reminder for those who live in the Seattle area, or may be traveling there between NOW and December 13th.

Come From Away opened tonight at the Settle Repertory - Bagley Wright Theatre, 155 Mercer St, Seattle
If you can, I Heartily recommend seeing it - we saw it when it was working out the kinks in San Diego this Summer - it is fantastic.
It recalls a day in our lives that we will all long remember - has us going from laughing to crying to laughing again, that fast.

An update for you all since my last post - Come From Away continued its tour.
From Seattle it went to Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC - yes, THAT Ford's Theatre - we saw it again there with Jayhawk and his husband on 10 September.

After closing in Washington, DC, it traveled to Gander, NL for two benefit concerts then on to Toronto for two months before finally arriving on the Great White Way mid-February.

It's official opening was Sunday 12 March 2017 to rave reviews, including a NY Times Critics Pick.

The link below is from Wednesday 15 March 2017 when Justin Trudeau hosted 600 dignitaries and such to the Mission at the UN from around the world.

If you have an opportunity, I wholeheartedly encourage you to see it.
If you're a Torontonian and missed it the first time, they are forming a second company that will re-open in Toronto March, 2018.

Here is the Original Broadway Cast Recording that you can listen to (at least for awhile) courtesy of PBSMusic.

There are select songs from the performance on You Tube, too.
