Do you belong to your generation?

Even if that Generation scale always primarily referred to Americans, since globalization made everything more even everywhere and, most importantly, although I have never been precisely fond of being or appearing youthful (at forty that is not an issue anymore, anyway), I keep sensing, from the world around me that, while I am supposed to be Generation X, I fit so closely the American Millennial stereotype, which is doubly awful since I hate that generation even more than I hated being the age most of them have in 2015, that only the small divergences from that stereotype restore whatever sense of self-esteem I may have

Re: Do you belong to your generation?

I don't feel like a belong to my generation. Seems like everyone my age is trying to be famous for some reason that I seem to never be able to understand.

Of course I do. I also enjoy things from other generations, and in some cases relate to things from other generations more than to those of my own. But I thinks a just a little pretentious to think the you belong better to another generation.

Then again it's a belamo thread.

    Epic.

Jubbites had complained before when I would post a single sentence two or three lines long, so by the time I was about to begin the sixth one by simply writing all I wanted to express, it was pretty obvious what was going to happen.

So I didn't pull any string. Didn't need to. They just got tangled in their own mess, and blame people who simply articulate beyond third-grade tales.

No you're not. There's a lot of people living in Australia's southeastern mainland state, and in Canada's westernmost provincial capital, etc. LOL...

I'm in the oldest part of the Baby Boom (two generations older than Millennials), though when considering issues such as public policies and politics, I find myself almost always thinking more like a Millennial.

That was the XVIIIth century... and that, only up to the Revolution, you know which one.

The XIXth century was not about the traditional aristocratic candid confidence, but the gross, ignorant, juvenile bourgeois braggardism. The Victorian era was just the apex of the putrefaction that the XIXth century represents with respect to a tradition they pretended to continue, preserve and, worse of it all, to better.

Maybe for the same reason you don't write: "I was caught"... or simply abstained from posting that piece of drivel in #7.

I'm probably supposed to be one of those mole people who survive one of the various apocalypse only to spend my last days in a fortified library. Could turn the roof into a garden, just in case the apocalypse contained zombies. In other words I'm either very early or very late.

Perhaps--because the 18th was the century of his family's ascendancy, his ancestors' valor. But, as I recall, he was notably nostalgic for the 12th century, not untypical of his time (witness the brilliance of the Romanesque and Gothic Revival buildings of the period). If I remember correctly, doesn't "The Education" begin with a rumination on the Virgin and the Dynamo, in which Adams longs for the (imagined?) unity of the Middle Ages?

Hard to imagine a nostalgic Samuel or John or Abigail Adams.

Someday you should look at his elegiac "Mont St. Michel and Chartres". The introduction is by his friend Ralph Adams Cram. How Adams must have admired and envied him! The great architect wasn't simply "accomplished" (a description befitting Adams) but a man whose position and prestige came from actually accomplishing. I imagine that Adams saw himself one who inherited a legacy whereas Cram left one.

Adams seems most impressed with his father and his paternal grandmother, much more so than with President John Quincy Adams (who died when Henry was 10) or the "memory" of John and Abigail. I read a passage describing the sufferings and otherness of the Madam (what he called his grandmother, Mrs John Quincy Adams) to my husband and got the response "He's being braggy" to which I responded "What on earth is the point of ancestors if you cannot brag about them."

I will investigate Mont St Michel and Chartres--thank you for the suggestion.
