    What would you think of

people being required some sort of identification or justification, particularly a bank statement proving your purchase power, in order to be allowed to enter in any sort of business or even access certain parts of towns and cities?

I appreciate that for some, the gated community in America (or similar) is merely a suburb they reach via aircraft.

    You need an aircraft.

Segregating yourself through your bureaucratic method is declasse.

Were. Used to be. When cities were a ruin, when trade was a joke, and credit some ungodly thing, unless referred to your priest of local lord.

Precisely, I was talking about segregation among the masses: it doesn't concern the elite... the real elite, not the big fish in the village.

I'd rather see a proof of intelligence requirement before people are allowed to post on the internet or even publicly air their thoughts. Also a proof of wisdom requirement. Let stupidity go quietly about its day with only limited risk of infecting the youth of society.

I'd say people who propose such things would be shocked at the places they'd be excluded from.
Blah blah blah, something enigmatic sounding...

Exactly: like when they are shocked that some of the worst criminals do not look the way they assumed they all do.

It can be really annoying. When I went out to Amsterdam to look for places to live it really annoyed me - every place had a minimum earnings in the Netherlands to live there. When you try and explain you are a student, but can pay a number of months up front they just hang up on you. I tried a second route of telling them I was employed (I still was in the UK, and my earnings due to the pound being strong normally put me above the fresh hold), but they refused to accept that as it was not a Netherlands based job.

Or that you didn't understand the question...

People are usually very strong in their assumptions, and particularly when they concern "intelligence".

Ah but, unlike yourself, I've made no assumptions, only observations based on your posts.

One can simply "observe", but from the moment you "make", you are already adding stuff of yours to the "observing", stuff including assumptions, prejudices, etc.

In any case, the "assumptions" I was referring to were the ones concerning concepts which are assumed free of doubt or any further and farther observation, concepts ranging from "intelligence" to apparently simpler like "tree" of "letter".

It was just an idea, a suggestion. Yours is fine too.

I would go to great lengths to keep Oprah from annoying me, but undoubtedly for different reasons than the Swiss clerk had. She is already a kind of wallpaper in many public places.

In my quaint Arcadian town we have one outstandingly peculiar "elitist" club, and one of the membership requirements is to be owner of property inside of the town's moat.
But in my experience, having property inside of the town's moat quite certainly may indicate affluence, but that does not necessarily mean that one is a member of the true power elite

You are literally talking of the rich man in the village, which is the Spaniards' idea of "elite", but which nations with a more complex civilization, mainly France and Britain and, to the extent they mimicked those two, the American Wasps, find totally laughable and despicable in their pretensions... however, I am not sure there are that many people left in the Western world living through that concept of "elite", because elites are for times of building up and of stability, that is, times of ruthless imperialism and ruling, the Bang times, while now we are in times of recession ("Crunch"), in which the essential is not building or maintaining a society, a whole civilization, but only the means that support and nourish it... that is, we have rather reverted back to times of "the rich of the village".
