You're use to the Cantonese rather than the Mandarin.

"gung hay fat choi" is a new year greeting in Cantonese, and it roughly means "may you prosper."

"xīnnin kuil" is the present day popular greeting in putong hua (Mandarin) and it means "Happy New Year."

"gung hay fat choi" rendered in putong hua comes out as "gong xi fa cai".

Today is the last day of Chinese New Year in the States. My day ended a few hours ago. I ate too much. I need to go on a diet.

    That's just tradition..

For us, today - the fifteenth of the first lunar month is a day of celebration - a lantern lighting festival. The term for 'lighting lantern' and 'begetting a male offspring' and near homophonous phrases, dian deng 點燈, and tian deng 添丁. Traditionally, it is a day for introducing the news of recent births of male offspring to the ancestral temple, and have a big celebration involving relatives, villagers, kith and kin. And of course, lots of lanterns, firecrackers, food offerings and libations etc.

So is 'begetting male offspring' another term for handling Sum Yung Guy's sweet and sour chicken balls and filling him up with plum sauce?

I suppose that would be how Gei Guy takes a few stabs at this exercise. It may not be successful in begetting male offsprings, but you cannot fault him for trying. And I am sure the process is very enjoyable too - as evidenced by the "filling him up with plum sauce."
