    Lord Richard Attenborough has died.

Five days short of his 91st birthday, at lunch time, UK time today.

Sad news indeed. Even more sad, I suppose, is the fact that I know his brother's work more than Richard's. The only 2 movies I could remember seeing him in were Jurassic Park and Miracle on 34'th Street. A quick peek at his IMdB page reminded me of a few others, especially Flight of the Phoenix. (Great movie if you've never seen it. Highly recommended.)

I marvel that his family produced two such diverse great men in one generation.

My favorite role for him was his portrayal of the fumbling Lord Burghley in Elizabeth. I'm not sure his portrayal was fair to Burghley, but the telling of the tale was excellent if not necessarily historically true.

May he rest in peace, and may Sir David Attenborough be able to continue his significant contributions to naturalist causes and debates. True greatness is rare.

We should also remember that he won the Academy Award for directing Gandhi.

    Which was the best?

What was Attenborough's best contribution since 1941?

He was at Princess Dianas funeral. I will never forget watching that on tv as a kid and remembering him at it.

    Also Jurassic Park.

I was just reading this online, the man had a great innings. I admit to being surprised that both he and his wife spent the last few years together in a nursing home.
    A true talent. RIP.

That is an impossible question to answer
Which fims is best is subjective.
I loved Chorus Line but would never watch Cry Freedom as the subject matter, to me, is not entertaining

In the 1940s he specialised playing psychopaths and cowards. In the 1950s he appeared in scores of humdrum, black-and-white British films.

In the 1960s he appeared in supporting roles in big US productions where he usually outshone the clunky American star but he used his salary to produce some interesting, semi-permissive british films.

In the 1970s and 80s he continued in supporting roles to finance his self-produced directorial efforts which (I.M.O.) resemble slow-moving parades of imperial waxworks. He took on the biography of Gandhi even though David Lean said it wasn't cinematic and he incomprehensibly got a Lithuanian-American to play Chaplin.

And in the 1990s his illness took over and his career came to its close.

Richard Lord Attenborough. Probably Baron Attenborough.
To be Lord Richard Attenborough he would need to be the younger son of a duke or marquess.

    For example,
Alfred Lord Tennyson (1st Baron Tennyson)
Lord Alfred Douglas (younger son of the Marquess of Queensbury)

I'm not sure why I wrote post #18. I've never been partial to him whatever he did. His friends called him Billy Bunter because of his addiction to chocolate and he would become as ubiquitous on TV as Stephen Fry is now. And there was that illness which left him weeping in public.
