Should I stop buying from Petsmart?

I saw undercover PETA videos of how they receive their animals. They come from mills that treat the animals like garbage. Basically a gerbil concentration camp.

Many gerbils I've bought from Petsmart died within a few months, probably from bad breeding. Also this happened with a hamster I got from there. I decided any rodent pets I get will be from reputable, smaller stores that don't get their animal from large mills.

I explained this to some people who said they don't buy animals from Petsmart but only products and/or grooming services. I feel like even doing that supports their practices.

Do you shop at Petsmart and do practices like that discourage you from shopping there? I have to admit, I am kind of tempted to get stuff from there because it's convenient and they have a lot of stuff. Discuss.

I get that, and I know she is an extremist but still want to know if the allegations are true and why people don't aware themselves about pet mills and large corporations.

There was an interesting article on NPR yesterday about eating Guinea Pigs. Apparently, their faces and hands are delicious. Imports to the US are rising to meet the demand.

I have choices other than chain stores like PetSmart for the most part. I did buy an Elizabethan collar there the other day, but that was a rarity.

This almost sounds like a Pete question lol--but no i would not shop at this store---it's not really a discounted store anyway--I'd find a small place owned by an animal lover.

I wonder if there are rodent breeders that are not large operations. Try to find one. In order to stay profitable I would think there would be no other way for a dedicated business in rodent pets than to be inhumane.

Re: Should I stop buying from Petsmart?

Can't confirm anything on Petsmart but there is a lot of places that get their animals from mills and that is why the animals are sick and have things wrong with them. I used to work in a Pet store, I worked in a kennel. A good amount of time animals had problems and the way they came in were horrible, they came in a van and had their individual cages, but there was like 30 some animals back there.

Plus when it comes the Dogs and Cats especially, they don't live in a very healthy environment anyway, it is very confined. I had the unfortunate experience of coming in the next morning and finding a dead dog a couple of times when working there for a year. I absolutely loved being around the animals and taking care of them, but I hated the fact the animals are trapped in those stores in that space and all alone when it is closed.

Petsmart, PetCo, PetsAtHome, etc, etc are pretty much the animal-retail equivalent of McDonalds, Walmart, etc. Pile 'em high, sell 'em cheap ... and fuck animal welfare.

When PetsAtHome first came to the UK they seemed to think that they could do business over here the way they do in US ... selling puppies, kittens, and caged birds, etc. The British public really don't like seeing puppies and kittens for sale in pet shops as though they were just another product ... so that never took off over here.

Although they still sell hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, mice (only female mice though, the males smell so they end up as snake food) fish, etc, they seem to have abandoned the idea of selling birds.

These places could afford to give the pets away really; the animals are only an excuse for flogging the punters expensive crap needed to house and care for them. Horrible tiny little cages, bad food, and all the other trashy pet-industry paraphernalia.

I would never buy a pet from such a place. There are thousands of pets in animal rescue centres looking for new homes. Or, you can always buy from a private breeder who breeds for a hobby and not for maximum profit.

I've become more sour about pet breeders, even those who aren't trying to turn a maximum profit. Too many, if not most, are breeding for "show" rather than good health. I think that's douchey.

There are statistics about the health of purebreds (which is the primary output of private breeders, though not all) which demonstrate consistent health problems distinctive to breeds. If you are talking to breeders you'll find that many will suggest, or outright say, that they are breeding primarily to win championships or for excellent 'conformation.' I've pressed this issue when I thought once or twice about buying directly from a breeder and received rather halfhearted replies about how their dogs had "longevity." On the other hand, their advertisements shouted about the medals their dogs won for their showmanship. For example, with my particular favorite breed, there are several genetically-related diseases ( e.g., cardiomyopathy, Von Willebrand's) which are tracked by the breeders themselves; however, individuals with a history of these diseases remain in the breeding pool because of their other commercial features. Health ought to come first, including disposition, and appearance second.

So, you can tell if a breeder is breeding healthy animals by examining their breeding program.

Sadly, that oftens seems to be the case for Kennel Club registered dogs and cats. In order to meet the abitrary 'breed standards' the breeders churn out unhealthy freaks.

Personally, I would not buy from a Kennel Club type breeder. Just look at what has happened to many of the breeds over the past 50 years; the brachycephalic ones in particular seem to be bred with a total lack of concern for the animal's health and welfare.

That's bad for their stomachs, plus that doesn't help stinky puppy breath.

Been feeding raw beef bones (and more) safely to my dogs for about fifteen years now, vet directed and approved. Note that dogs are more or less designed to gnaw on raw bones like this. See their cousins wolves for example. Plus, bad dog breath is mostly a result of 1) overall poor health and 2) dirty teeth. Dirty teeth are cleaned by scraping against the bones. Real food improves their overall health. My senior dogs have never had to have a teeth cleaning as a result, and their breath is pleasant.

Additional benefits: they think it's fun. They get calcium etc. Bone-y poop helps express their anal glands, so no disgusting asshole infections or squirty ass oil surprises. And, I don't have to brush their teeth.

Having said that, I know the idea of feeding raw bones is off-putting to many people.

When I'd buy from Petsmart in the past, yes. Gerbils need to be in pairs and anytime I'd get a pair, one would die within anywhere from two weeks to three months. Then the only choice would be to return the lone gerbil and start with a new pair or introduce a new gerbil to the lone one, and that is not easy because they don't always accept each other.

After a few rounds of unknown deaths, I did more research on where they get their animals from and how they're living conditions are and opted to stop buying from them.

There are private breeders, just like how they have them for dogs and cats. There are actually registered gerbil breeders in the United States. Obviously there won't be as many as for dogs but to answer your question, yes, there are options outside of large chain stores. Just takes more effort to find them.

I shop there occasionally & would continue to do so (in my case for tropical fish and/or supplies)

The fish in some of their tanks don't always look all that good/healthy (but thats not just PetSmart, it's the others too).
Ofcourse I'll only buy if they look healthy..
