    Code of Conduct

Crony capitalism and the death of the Republic.

Benjamin Franklin once said that the Constitution gave us a Republic -- if we can keep it.

We haven't. Instead we have the form of a republic possessed by something else. This talk shows that far better than I could have imagined:

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Re: Crony capitalism and the death of the Republic.

    Wow.

It works if the monied interests don't fight it to the death, by giving the law-writers and policymakers more and more money and comps to ensure the status quo, along with buying all of the media and turning it all into their mouthpieces to brainwash us. Right now they are hoping they can "fix" the FCC with enough perks so that they can also buy the Internet, which will be to the utter detriment of humanity.

Though it was inevitable, I consider the Citizens United decision one of the worst and most devastating decisions in any court in human history - and, very possibly, eventually resulting in more early human deaths than any other decision. Those who get elected in the USA, for better or worse, follow policies which affect outcomes in nearly every other part of the world.

Some of the policies they would like to see enacted here, could cause deaths in this country which may even resemble the numbers (proportionally to relative population) under Mao Tse-Tung. Some of these monied candidates and politicians want to see the absolute abandonment of all forms of government welfare, help, and entitlements...even those that we have paid into such as Social Security.

The Republican Party, in almost its entirety.

Consider there are U. S. politicians now who, if they had their way, would have us bombing Iran, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Ukraine and a host of other places.
"All legal U. S. residents who are 18 years or older, shall have an unconditional right to vote." - 28th Amendment, US Constitution?

We are all just witnessing the inevitable end of the Republic....as all Republics seem to end when the oligarchs finally own everyone and everything.

Can a quasi-military dictatorship and Presidente for Life really be that far off?

There are 42 million smokers in the United States. If they had no intention and no possibility of quitting, but still just gave up $10 worth of cigarettes in an annoying few days of shitty moods and sleepless nights, they could raise 420 million dollars for their favourite candidate.

There is no disenfranchisement of voters in the United States. There is laziness, and handwringing about it.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Liberals think they should be able to pick and choose which monied interests get to express opinions and influence politics. The real danger to the republic will come as they succeed.

Crony capitalism is the only form of capitalism that has ever existed.
Something Adam Smith understood perfectly well:

“Civil government, so far as it is instituted for the security of property, is in reality instituted for the defense of the rich against the poor, or of those who have some property against those who have none at all.”
    Meanwhile, our planet is dying.

Follow the discussions of the latest GOP laws -- they're imposing limitations that will make it literally impossible for many non-whites to vote at all. That's disenfranchisement.

You refuse to read the Constitution.

BTW, so is the Republican National Committee. That just shows how looney the law is.

When the constitution was written, our major cities were little towns, 90% of people were farmers, and companies were traded under the shade of trees.

Exactly, yet according to the Federalist Society (of which Alito,Roberts, Scalia and Thomas are members of) rulings aren't supposed to change from that.

There are no "liberal media" -- there are only media which are free only to present a perspective that supports the current power structure. That, by definition, is a conservative media.

They would be thoroughly baffled -- and indignant -- at the idea that inanimate entities can have free speech, when it's self-evident that they aren't capable of speech in the first place.

Jefferson and the rest understood that large corporations are enemies of liberty, because they exert undue influence over government.

You almost make me believe the accusation that Madison framed the Constitution so as to deliberately protect a plutocracy.

The First Amendment was framed as an absolute to prevent future politicians from creating exceptions, and allocations of freedom. Your notion that MSNBC, but not business corporations should be allowed to spend money on political advocacy, is why it says NO LAW.

I've never said anything about MSNBC.

The Framers had in mind human beings when they set down that Amendment -- not paper entities.

At least in Great Britain and the Dutch Republic, corporations were actually quite powerful, but not in the United States until the Gilded Age.

You keep saying that corporations should not be allowed to spend money to influence politics, but you have never faced the fact that the media and the DNC are corporations. Are you going to silence the NYTimes, Wash Post, MSNBC etc. Of course not. You simply want to silence those who want to speak for free enterprise and capitalism, while leaving the Democrat propaganda media a free hand.

There is no "Democrat propaganda media", there is only the corporate propaganda media.

BTW, you have a short memory: I want to bust up ALL the media empires and return to what the Founders conceived of when they discussed a free press: a multitude of locally-owned businesses with a multitude of views.

BTW2, I definitely don't want to "silence those who want to speak for free enterprise and capitalism"; I want to silence those who fight against them -- which is at present just about every single large corporation.

And BTW3, I want rights to be rights, and everyone to have them equally. You want corporations to be able to neutralize the rights of their owners, using those owners' wealth to pursue whatever the boards like regardless of the owners' beliefs.

That's because capitalism could care less about liberty or rights; capitalism believes that money rules, and to hell with government -- it's just a tool to be used in pursuit of profit.

Capitalism has done more good for humans than anything else. It is not even close. Through human history until Britain in the late 1700s, the vast majority lived in one room hovels, poor food, one set of clothes, no medicine, no plumbing etc. It is capitalism -- men working to benefit themselves by innovation, and with the freedom to do so, which has given us the lives we enjoy to day.
Despite Democrat attempts to destroy that freedom, we still have the greatest economy in history, but we are in serious danger of losing it.

Corporatism is dangerous if unchecked, but socialism cannot and does not work fully realized. I think Benvolio oversells what capitalism can do but is largely correct about without the innovations it makes possible how much worse off the world would be. However I don't have as much of a problem with social democracy as the vast majority on the right do. We need to have a safety net to care for our most vulnerable, and we can't allow corporations to run roughshod over people and the environment... there has to be some measure of effective regulation. I reject the essential direction that Kuli and East Med especially essentially want to venture as something unworkable and half cocked... to not see even a strong constitutional brake to capitalism of any kind simply is ideological hogwash.

I would love to see NYTimes, CNN and MSNBC broken into thousands of Ma and Pa operations. But it is a silly idea.

Some among the Founding Fathers wanted us to be an agrarian economy, and opposed the idea of cosmopolitan cities and manufacturing and banking. Jefferson the most prominent.... but though banking and finance has corrupted and must be carefully regulated without the foresight of an Alexander Hamilton winning out America would have never developed into a powerful economy. Just having a world as the Founders lived in doesn't take account they did through the constitutional process provide the laws can adapt to the times.

Well said. The reason there has never been another Constitutional convention is that we doubt that we can do as we'll again. I shudder at the thought.

So was a revolution against the British Crown.

But actually it's a very rational idea: the greater the number of voices, the healthier the Republic will be (not that it would do any huge amount of good, since we still only have two real parties).

Capitalism doesn't care about innovation. You're confusing capitalism with free enterprise -- a common error and a deadly one, since capitalism can be either a friend or an enemy to free enterprise.

Historically innovation gives rise to capitalism and vice versa. Innovators often aspire to capitalist wealth, and capitalism often funds innovation. Socialism, no the other hand usually stifles innovation.

Patent nonsense. A dumb idea repeated a hundred times in a populist chant does not make any place better.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Why would there be "a dumb idea repeated a hundred times"? Multiple sources ==> multiple ideas.

As it is, we have just a handful of people deciding what we should hear.
