I'm a little surprised that the Republican Party has remained so homophobic so long after it began to hurt them.

I'm hopeful that they will continue this nonsense, however, since it really illustrates to the world who they are as people, and how dysfunctional and unpatriotic is their ideology.

There is a WaPo article from today that claims Republican attitudes toward gays have not been changing in recent years, and that the GOP will not soon move to embrace gay rights.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...-anytime-soon/

Basically, the article reports that essentially all of the massive shift in favor of gay rights in America over the past ten years has occurred among Democrats. The Republican Party is too wedded to its religious fundamentalist ideology to change.

Why does one is supporter of LGTB rights remain in the GOP? They offer the LGTB community nothing but hate, they are bigots of intolerance. Up until 1970's I was loyal to the Republican Party but when they embraced the Religious Right and the hate they preached I let the party and will not support a Republican today.

Somebody will have to force me at gunpoint to vote Republican. At no other time will it ever happen, not even locally.

The political party which HATES Sharia Law, but has their own sets of wishes (and laws they wish they could force on us) which would be **EXACTLY** the same, in all respects, as Sharia Law.
"All legal U. S. residents who are 18 years or older, shall have an unconditional right to vote." - We need a 28th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution which resembles this...NOW!

VOTING: Just remember: "Be careful of what you DON'T wish for. You might just get it." GET OUT AND VOTE for what you DO wish for.

Exactly they decry Sharia law when their Biblical law wouldn't be that much different. Both theocractic Christians and Muslims wish to impose their despotic religions on us.

One more reason why the Republican Party will go the way of the Whigs.

The only shift has been in the Democratic side. Six years ago Democrats were still afraid to say they were for gay marriage. Now you won't win the party endorsement without it.

I've seen that here in a few elections. It's also reflected in the fact that now in this part of Oregon more people are registered independent than to any party.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I can not understand how any gay person can vote republican. For that matter any low wage earner.

It takes a pretty serious and contentious issue to break a political party. The Whigs died when the party split over the issue of slavery, something that just about everyone on both sides was passionate about. The only really contentious issue that people get passionate about now is gay rights, but lots of people don't get involved, plus there are gays who remain Republican.

    I don't know that it's a big enough issue.

It all depends on how high you value the rights in the Constitution that the Republicans like but the Democrats don't.

    ^
They HATE the Constitution, if it involves something they don't agree with, and it's not just a recent development.

Remember years ago that - I think - there was a federal law forbidding medical doctors from suggesting how a woman could get an abortion? A long time ago...I'm thinking it was under George H. W. Bush...maybe under early George W. Bush...but, of course, forbidding doctors from talking about something that is legal is entirely and absolutely unconstitutional, as it prohibits free speech.

Free speech includes having the power to decide NOT to speak, as well. Some states, though, are requiring doctors to disparage abortion, or to sit and watch ultrasounds or propaganda films (and sometimes even worse things, such as requiring the State to rape a pregnant woman). Government-mandated messages and propaganda abolish FREE SPEECH every bit as much as the government coming along and shutting down newspapers and websites that say things they don't like.

My examples are about abortion rather than guns (the topic of this thread), because I'm not really aware of government mandates or restrictions on gun speech but, indeed, the topic of disagreeing with the Constitution did come up.

But the remarkable thing here has been the failure (inability?) of Republicans to come round to the thinking of America and the world on this issue.

Even the Catholic Church seems to be moving in the direction of supporting gay rights. But the Republican Party remains profoundly homophobic, seemingly unable to support the values of most Americans (and, indeed, most of the developed world) when it comes to justice for people oppressed. They surely know that this is hurting their brand. But they seem curiously unable to do the right thing.

The Republican Party is not so much a political party as it is a religious movement. Republicans are an American Taliban. They will not change because they cannot resist from cramming their religious values down the throats of all Americans.

It all goes back to that grotesquerie of a preacher Jonathon Edwards and his damnable sermon calling America a "city set on a hill", that gave people here the ridiculous notion that God has a special plan for America, that America is the new Israel, and all that sort of claptrap.

Seriously, the "Christian Nation" garbage that flowed from Edwards and now infects most of American "evangelicalism" rises to the level of heresy.
