Also '96 must have been one hell of a year in SA sport

The US has reached the last 16 and Ann Coulter is VERY UNHAPPY. So funny!

With Team USA suddenly in the round of 16, and World Cup fever allegedly sweeping the nation that football forgot, the American right has sprung into action. Determined to preserve American exceptionalism against a rising tide of baguette-munching ball-juggling pinko Europhile hippy surrender-communism, Ann Coulter has come to the rescue: "Any growing interest in soccer," she wrote to widespread amusement, "can only be a sign of the nation's moral decay."

Excuse me but this is Just Us Boys. If you want to talk about Ann Coulter you need to go over to Just Us Tranny-hoes.

In either case, I'm glad the USA got as far as it did. I would have rather it had been through a draw with Germany at least, but that's soccer I suppose. In either case we're gonna lose to Belgium. No doubt in my mind about that.

Belgium have a really strong squad on paper but I would not rule Klinsi pulling off something here - the US are organized and hard to break down, something that Belgium struggled to do so far.

^Not to mention that, unlike Germany, Netherlands, France and Costa Rica, the Belgians have not exactly put anyone to the sword with that really strong squad.

I'd be surprised if they overcome the Americans with any ease.

    She should meet these three:

They could use her head for a soccer ball.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I didn't think he would be top scorer at all, but I thought he would have a good tournament when Falcao pulled out. His had a great season for Monaco, and now that Colombia only play one up top he gets to be more important. Still his absolutely stepped up at this cup and I think he will regret being at Monaco now, as no one will be able to afford him and he could easily move to any of the big clubs!

Well you just knew he was going to get a penalty eventually! Perhaps the last one wasn't but he had a few in the game which should have been. Man I love and hate Robben so much - at his best his so good, at his worst his a diving little cunt who will fly through the air at the mere suggestion someone is going to touch him!

It was a penalty in my opinion.

But Robben plays a calculated percentage game in the penalty box: he tends to dive both when he is fouled and when he isn't fouled.
He's not the only one to do this. But it's cynical.
It will be interesting to see if the ref in the next game will be watching out for this.

^JohnnyAnger makes a good point, though - one clear one which should have been given at the end of the first half, and one or two in the 2nd half which I have seen given by other refs.

I thought it was a penalty, too, and not just because I had my Oranje jersey on.

I might regret this by the end of the cup - but the Germans will not win this tournament. Loew, for all his talk of controlling possession, seems to lack the tactical knowledge to make it real deep in cups as this side seem to just lose all organization.
This game currently is playing out like Ghana Germany at the moment - absolute madness with a load of chances for Algeria to break (better teams would take them as well).

They will probably win this, but France should really hurt them.

I'm inclined to agree. Neuer had to come too far out too many times for the Germans to be comfortable about their chances. The Germans looked like they weren't learning any lessons there, and they will probably need a big post-mortem on it this morning.

Great game, though. Would be quite happy to see Feghouli in an Arsenal shirt.

I really don't mind who wins and must admit to no real interest though I do keep up with who has won or lost.

The problem is that the effects of a country's game do not stay on the field. After each Algerian game, here in France, we had to suffer burnt cars, smashed windows and general social disturbance.

    Re: Football World Cup 2014

An ugly controversy is surfacing, that members of the Cameroon team accepted bribes to fix the result of their 4-0 loss to Croatia in the group stage.

I imagined it might be one or two players.

It turns out that SEVEN of the team may have deliberately thrown the match.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28102841

World Cup 2014: Cameroon investigates match-fixing claims

Cameroon officials are to investigate claims that seven of their players were involved in match-fixing at the World Cup in Brazil.

The allegations have been made in a German news magazine Der Spiegel by a convicted match-fixer from Singapore.

Cameroon lost all their Group A games, including a 4-0 defeat by Croatia.
The startling part is the second sentence below:

The allegations were made by convicted football match-fixer Wilson Raj Perumal, who was detained by police in Finland in April on an international arrest warrant.

In a discussion with Der Spiegel, the Singaporean correctly forecast the result with Croatia and that a player would be sent off.
I remember that game. The player sent off elbow-striked a Croatian in his back, in full sight of the referee:

What was ALSO interesting now, in retrospect, about that match, was that two Cameroon players started fighting each other:

Could it be that one of the uninvolved uncorrupted players nearly ruined the result by trying to score?

Here's the four goals. Surely if a result is to be fixed, the goalkeeper had to be involved.

All of this after the previous story before they even reached Brazil, about them demanding bonuses:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27755342

Cameroon arrive in Brazil following their bonus dispute

Cameroon finally arrived in Brazil for the World Cup on Monday after a dispute over bonus payments that delayed their journey for almost a day.

The squad, including former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o, had refused to fly to South America on Sunday morning.

But they eventually agreed a financial package with the nation's football federation after an emergency meeting.

The squad left from Yaounde at 06:00 on Monday, more than 20 hours later than had been scheduled.

Team coach Volker Finke had said players were complaining that the 61,000 they were due to be paid for figuring in the World Cup was not enough.
Shows where their priorities were. Money first. Football second. With that attitude, it's no wonder they sold out their club, their supporters, and their country. Really ugly and disgraceful.

^ The second bit about the bonuses is a bit more deep than they were out for money. Basically FIFA pays for the players to play at the cup, but it goes to the nations FA who then are meant to give players a slice once the cup is over. In the past African FAs have just straight up stolen this money from the players, or given them half of what they were due. This is why the African teams tend to demand their money up front from the FA, who then get paid back by FIFA later on.

Still its a dark moment for the World Cup (although probably not the first time it has happened) and I hope it gets sorted out quickly.

At one point in the past 2 years Eto'o was one of the highest-paid players in the game, at 17 million pounds annually. He made over 7 million at Chelsea last season. Really, he still needs a bonus to play for his country?

    Sickening.

USA hold your heads high - if you are going to get knocked out that is the way to do it. Great stuff all around.
