They'll get out of the group no problem. So dangerous in attack.

It's the first time in a real long while! The full backs worry me quite a bit and Rooney needs to be dropped for any of Oxlade, Barkley or Lallana because he just won't track back and Sterling looked like that no. 10 role has been made for him - the Italians were clearly rattled by him and I don't want him being forced out wide to make Rooney feel a little bit better. Also the Uruguayans are much slower than the Italians and it would be much better to charge at them.

The next match will decide it, if we get the win again Uruguay I will relax.

I know a guy who calls it "wussball", and says "Real men would play real football"... meaning, of course, the US version where the goal is to inflict as many bruises as possible while a few on your team move a pointy-ended bladder of pigskin back and forth on the field.

He doesn't understand what I learned long ago, that being constantly on the field and constantly moving without breaks every time the guy with the ball goes down is a whole different ball game.

Well it's the USA team's first appearance today (seen below) against Ghana, so we'll see how they do. My understanding is that football / soccer doesn't really interest you guys in the States so I wonder how much coverage it will get on TV. In the UK every match is shown live on either BBC or ITV and as anyone who saw the England / Italy match will probably confirm, there's a concern that the lack of goals from the English (too many missed chances from Wayne Rooney in particular) might mean they'll be on an early plane back home. Oh well, we shall see when they play Uruguay on Thursday.

^Yeah, was always going to be tough for Portugal even before the sending-off. Never sure what these guys are thinking when they get up to stupid shit like that.

Pepe very lucky he's playing club football in Spain and not in Portugal. I suspect were he at Porto or Sporting, he'd get Beckhamesque treatment circa 1998 after that game against Argentina.

I don't think Pepe gives a shit! The guy is a nut job, he always pulls shit like this. I can't think of a time I have seen him play and not completely hated that shit head.

USA v Ghana now - got to say I want Ghana to win. When they went out in the quarter final in South Africa, it was probably the most upsetting exit I have seen. It was all so sad and the start of Suarez career as a dick head. Also they just showed a clip of the Ghanian team singing and dancing before the game, so I love them even more.

Well, I just saw USA vs Ghana. USA won 2-1, but Ghana beat us the fuck up. Even the espn announcers commented that the USA looked liked more like a boxer getting bloodied up.

I guess I should be glad about the win, but USA still needs more skill instead of just relying on luck to win. Seriously, Google has USA possession at just 40% for that game. Forty percent. It's ridiculous how often they lose the ball.

Oh well. At least they have more skill then they used to. I thought the game was gonna end 1-0, but they did surprise me a little. We're getting better. Slowly.

On a side note, I thought it was hilarious when one the announcers referred to Joe Biden as "the President of the United States." It took him a couple of seconds to correct himself too.

In either case, don't expect me to still be around once the USA bows out. I could care less about soccer outside of Team USA at the World Cup(when we get to go). Sorry.

Wow -- not even I'm that . . . limited. It's a sport worth watching at the Cup level just for the excellence.

Scoring that early really did not help the game (but it was an amazing goal!!), as it encouraged the US to sit deep and soak up all the pressure. I think it was reasonable sensible, but it won't happen against Germany or Portugal - you will need more guile and creativity in that game for certain. I think Portugal might be do-able though, they don't have much to offer outside of getting the ball to Ronaldo. Depends though, it will require a top performance from USMNT.

On another note -BEST WORLD CUP EVER! Every game so far (well not Iran Nigeria) has been incredible and with the pressure starting to build up for some sides it's only going to get better!

So... anyone thinking Spain might be pretty much finished this evening? Or do we think the Aussies might upset the apple cart and manage to hold (or beat) the Dutch? It's a must win for Spain either way, I think.

Also, a loss will end the hopes of either Croatia or Cameroon, given last night's draw between Brazil and Mexico. I suspect it might be Cameroon as first team to exit.

    World Cup defending champions.

    Double European defending champions.

OUT, in two losses, in their first two games.

I wonder what odds you could have got for that.

What is a shame for Chile (or the Netherlands) is that one of them will have to face Brazil in the next round - likely to be whoever is the loser of their head-to-head in a few days time.

    In other news:

There was chaos outside the stadium at kick-off, as a group of ticketless Chilean fans stormed into the press room and battered and broke down a wall. They were then rounded up by Brazilian police. FIFA released a statement condemning the actions.

Given Uruguay's mauling by Costa Rica and apparently rudderless on-pitch response, I'm inclined to think 3-1 England is about right.

There's no shame in losing to two excellent goals.

Both goals were of such outstanding quality it is difficult to say which one was better. Everything about the header was perfect: anticipation, movement and execution. With the second it was the opportunistic cheekiness of his actions that took the breath away.

I'm now inclined to think that anything can happen, and apparently it did.

Damn, do I ever wish Arsene had managed to make that Suarez transfer stick...

    Insightful piece on Spain's demise.
Things change. We move on. But not without a period of mourning for one of the greatest teams ever.

It has been a run of success to live down the ages. Before this World Cup, Spain’s previous 19 tournament matches had brought 17 victories, one draw and one defeat during three major tournament victories in a row. In outline, this is arguably the most concentrated run of success international football has seen, more rapid-fire than Brazil’s three World Cups between 1958 and 1970, more obviously domineering than West Germany’s four finals and two World Cup wins from 1974 to 1990, or Argentina’s tarnished double in 1978 and 1986. Arguments of style and aesthetics will come and go. But at the closing of the Age of Iberia it does seem certain that no team has ever come as close at its best to being simply unbeatable, as this Spain at its best, if only because winning a match must, by definition, involve being allowed to kick the ball occasionally.

True - we might somehow get out of this group, although it feels gone now. What was upsetting about the game was the stupid mistakes we make, and lack of threat that we showed against Italy. All we can do now is support Italy and hope Costa Rica fall apart.

It is that, or I marry a Dutch man and get citizenship...

Most fun I had watching a game for a while. And I was in the Netherlands when they beat Spain 5:1 which meant 5 free beers

So many surprises this year. I'm not very good with my bets :-/

Oh and about Pepe .. IMHO he should be really happy that he is still allowed to play.

    THIS:

only gave him a 10 game penalty. If you ask me, he should be barred from football for life ..
