    Re: Football World Cup 2014

^ Well Lambert is already a Liverpool player now (signed for 4 million ish - he had his medical before the Peru game). Lallana looks like going there as well for 30 million almost being tied up and Shaw is set for United for the same price.

Schneiderlin I have heard less about, but now his in the French squad someone must go in for him. I think he might be the best of the bunch, but in a less glamorous role. There was talk of trying to get him to switch to playing for England, but that is over now. The other one looking set to leave is Dejan Lovern as well, going to Liverpool as well last I heard.

Still there are a bunch of younger players to step up at Southampton (Chambers, Ward-Prows, Reed) and Jay Rodriguez, who would have been in the England squad, coming back from injury they can still do well. It just depends on who they get in to manage them and how they spend the 70 odd million quid they pull in from transfers. No doubt they will turn out another insanely talented player next year as well.

I like Costa Rica. One of my favorite store managers moved there recently. And their World Cup qualifying showed they belong on the world stage.

I'd like to move there, but they are anally picky on who can be a resident -- they even turn down people for having multiple traffic tickets!

As to belonging on the world stage, I agree.

In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

Always in the build-up to a World Cup, our local broadcasters play the official films for all the ones which have been. They really do a good job of capturing the essence of the event, I think.

Anyway, I watched the official film from 1998 last night - cracking good fun, and some incredible goals (Bergkamp v Argentina, yowsers!). I'd forgotten actually how good some of that football really was, and re-living that France win in the final was incredible.

    2 more sleeps!

    Re: Football World Cup 2014

    Well... it's finally here.

    Tonight: vs

Venue: Sao Paolo, at the home-ground of Corinthians

Hosts Brazil take on an in-form Croatia in the first match of what we all hope will be a thrilling World Cup. Preparations have not gone smoothly in the run-up to the event - even now, things are not guaranteed to run smoothly with some of the venues still untested under full match-day conditions - and it seems nothing divides a nation quite like hosting an expensive major sporting event does.

Pundits reckon an upset is unlikely, but the pressure is more on the hosts and tournament favourites than Croatia. National coach Scolari's brand of football has not always been as flamboyant as that produced by other Selecao coaches over the years, and Brazil have been booed by their own fans as recently as last week at half-time in a pre-tournament friendly against Serbia.

Add to the excitement that one of Croatia's front-men is Brazilian-born former Arsenal striker Eduardo, who has represented Croatia for the last decade but will no doubt be keen to feature against his home country and looks likely to start. In addition to that, Croatia have no lack of creativity in midfield with Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic running the ****** Croatian coach Kovac has also said outright that they have a plan to stop Brazil dead in their tracks.

The hope of Brazil rest on the shoulders of the front three, but surely the bulk of the pressure sits with Barcelona striker Neymar. Barcelona's season ended with no trophies, unheard of in recent seasons, but the young striker's efforts produced fifteen goals in 41 outings across all competitions. A far cry from Messi's 41 goals in 46 games in the same season as Neymar's 57 million euro transfer, but surely not a bad return all things considered.

Predictions? I will go Brazil 2-0 Croatia.

The penalty was dodgy as hell and i think the standards of non European refs might be challenged a lot this year, if that is anything to go by!

Still well done Brazil, that should be their hardest game out of the way in the groups - although Mexico do always seem to beat them, to the point Brazilians are super scared of them.

What was the Oscar goal like? I managed to fall asleep before the end (I had my thesis defense and a flight back to the UK that day, I am not getting old damn it!)

^Much like the Neymar goal. A somewhat speculative, but well placed, shot which the keeper really should have stopped. Oscar's was further out than Neymar's. Cameroon and Mexico should take note and just shoot from any sort of distance. Keeper looked really good from the close-up shots, but the long range efforts... not so much.

I feel for the Croats a bit. They didn't create many chances, but the penalty was dodgy and that disallowed goal after the slightest touch on the keeper seemed unnecessarily harsh. Not to say they weren't out-played - Brazil were all over them - but certainly they had no luck at all last night.

Just saw the stuff I missed. The keeper for Croatia was so off, he really could/should have saved everyone of those goals.

The ruled out goal was a joke and can go with the bottling of ref for not sending of Neymar and the penalty.

    Starting 11:

    Mexico
Ochoa; Rodriguez, Marquez, Moreno, Layun, Aguilar; Guardado, Herrera, Vazquez; Dos Santos, Peralta.

    Cameroon
Itandje; Assou-Ekotto, Nkoulou, Mbia, Chedjou; Djeugoue, Enoh Song; Moukandjo, Choupo Moting; Eto'o.

Venue: Arena das Dunas, Natal - described "as the most perfect stadium in South America."

So today we have Mexico v Cameroon, in the other match from Group A. Both sides have had a fairly tough route to the World Cup with Mexico really struggling in the qualification campaign, going through 4 managers in 2013 alone. Cameroon have been doing their standard in fighting over bonuses, as well as forcing their manager, Volker Finke, to have 4 Cameroonian chaperones to "educate" him in their style of football.

Still both sides will be really going for this as the race for second spot in this group could be taken by any of them.

I think this could be a 2-2 draw - goals from Peralta, Dos Santos and Eto'o.

I was a little off with my prediction: Mexico 1 Cameroon 0 (although Peralta scored). Cameroon were really poor for a lot of it and defended far to deep and offered very little. Mexico had two goals harshly ruled out, so really should have won 3-0.

Is this going to be a world cup with terrible refs?

Been there, though not to the UK. Thesis defense was both a great deal of fun and more wearying than running a 10-km road race.

    It's the "drama team" encounter!

Though I don't expect drama on the field except from the officials.

    Spain 1 - 5 Netherlands

    Bwaaaahahahaha!

Always good to see arrogant, entitled, presumptious teams get their come-uppance in style.

Wish someone would do the same to Brazil. Here's hoping.

Hup Holland!! Wow, what a game!

And what an arse-rape of the reigning champs. Time to rethink the no-striker strategy? Time to rethink a #1 who has only played a handful of games all season. And time to rethink Torres.

I am grinning like an idiot over here. The amount of needling I got at my office today by everyone expecting Spain to roll over the Dutch...

So a few results in since the amazing Holland game (not sure I have recovered yet! Certainly be going to a Dutch bar in London for the next game now)
Chile 3 Australia 1 - Chile done their job really, but Australia gave them a lot of trouble. Cahill is such a threat in the air! I think he might grab a few more in this cup.

Colombia 3 Greece 0 - Colombia are looking good, took the normally super defensive Greek side apart. They could go far in this cup and I look forward to see more of them. Falcao going out has not hurt them yet.

Coming up though is the big game for me! England vs. Italy!!!!!!1 Expecting 0-0 with the weather, but either side could nick this.

I felt Costa Rica might have a really fun world cup as everyone just thinks they will get destroyed by the other three. Not that I thought Costa Rica would win that easily! Got to be a bit scared of Costa Rica now.

That goal off the head was incredible!

An absorbing match. Pirlo and Candreva were wonderful.
England had a good first half and looked really dangerous.

It was the best I have seen England play for a long long time. If we keep playing like this and go out in the group it will still be fine.

I was thinking that too. Love all those wet jerseys showing off those hot bodies. Does anybody know of a good website with HQ pictures from the WC? I want to look for some hot bulges.

It has been a thrilling WC so far. Certainly each of the games has been a cracking encounter.

England looked good last night; Italy did well to keep calm and keep the pressure on. And Costa Rica have put a spanner into the works, big time.

I'm still amazed there are people who don't enjoy this stuff.
