That's what everyone told me when I saw two mice in my house, but after I caught them both, I haven't seen any evidence of other mice for over six months. I still have two baited traps, but they remain empty.

They were probably just scouts sent out to find the good stuff.

You're a vegetarian, right? Maybe they had one taste of your food and threw themselves into the traps.

My mother used a wire cage to catch a rat. It was the size of a cat, and frisky too. It had chewed a hole in the door jamb to get into the house... Mum poured kerosene on it and struck at match. It screamed horribly for two minutes.

Finally caught the little bugger, should have got the traps straight away, killed it on the first night of using them.

Have to wait and see if there's more than one of the little fuckers.

I can't kill anything that will scream as it's being killed.

Over the years I have removed two mice from my apartments, in a box, alive.

I remember a story about ten years ago that somebody tried to kill an animal (I also think it was a rat), and they set it on fire, and it ran back into the house, which set the house on fire and it burned to the ground.

I know; I faced it with rats -- about two hundred of them in a 12'x 16' room where old grain bags had been discarded. We didn't use traps, though; we doubled up on heavy clothing and waded in with pitchforks, scooping rats and bags into a deep wheelbarrow and wheeling them out to be dumped in a big barrel. When we had fifty or so rats in the barrel, and they were starting to be able to climb on each other to get out, we threw a gasoline-soaked burlap bag on top and torched it.

We had to put out traps later, though, because a few managed to dash out of the room and escape.

Yep -- if there's one, there's a handful. Now you have to catch them before they develop language.

    LOL

That makes me think of the old game "Sim Ant", where the goal was to take over the yard and then drive the humans out of the house.
